Thank you RepairClinic! Fixed this myself in about an hour and saved a couple hundred bucks. Gave the wife a reason to keep me around!

If anyone is curious, I did an autopsy on my circulation pump motor. It's constructed in the same manner as a fish tank power head, with a core-rotor assembly that sits in the water. In fish tanks, the rotor is almost always in a vertical position, where the end of the axle rests on the bottom of the housing at rest, and it gets 'picked up' when the coil is energized and it spins. The trouble with the design of the dishwasher pump is that they laid the rotor assembly on its side. At rest, the axle sits directly on the bearing material and at start-up, the axle grinds against the bearing until it gets up to speed. The pump quits because as the bearings become worn and oval-shaped, the rotor endplay grows to where the magnet 'hangs' against one side of the motor. There's no mechanical interference, just an uneven magnetic field and it locks up. Overall I like my dishwasher, but this is an oversight by the engineers.

Oh it’s a design flaw. Planned obsolescence if you ask me. If a service tech does this job it’s easily 400. Needs to be a lawsuit.

Thanks for taking the time to figure out why the motor failed. I considered disassembling mine but then gave up when I saw your comment. Thanks again.

Thank you RepairClinic! This fixed my dishwasher's problem where it intermittently did not clean or spray water. A few tips from my experience: 1. Make sure you unmount the dishwasher from the side cabinets -- the screws are hidden under a plastic button that can be removed inside the dishwasher 2. Use a bit of plumbers grease around the pump's hose connections to make it easier to work with 3. I replaced the pinch-style hose clamp with a screw clamp (W10789434) so I didn't need to buy special pinch clamp pliers. It also seems more secure with this one 4. You may not need to detach the power wires if there's enough slack in the line behind your dishwasher

Thank goodness for this video. I ordered a replacement OEM pump and did the job myself. I'm no plumber and would say I'm the average weekend warrior when it comes to making repairs around the house. Had I not pulled the door off center the whole job could've been done in 90 minutes or less.

Thanks for the video! This made my repair a simple process. I discovered my old pump had stripped out the treads between the propeller and motor. My pump made a loud grinding noise before it stopped circulating water... this may help someone diagnose their problem.

I would strongly recommend using a worm gear type clamp instead of the one included.

Thank you, this worked out perfectly! They didn't have the clamp on its own at Lowes but employee there suggested the clamp which comes with the dishwasher hose kit, hopefully will stay in place unlike OEM (which seems designed to fail)

This video's really a huge help for me and saved me a lot of money… But it's nine years after you made it and my model is a bit different but it basically looks the same. Although I didn't disconnect the electricity the way you do in the video, I didn't understand why you had to… So I didn't and I also disconnected the hose on the outlet pump instead of at the garbage disposer… And I deserve all the water that came out of there!!… But I was ready for it, sort of! Otherwise it went exactly as you described it and I have no problems… Thank you so much for this video .

You saved me a lot of time and money! I watched the video last week, bought the pump and (optional) grommet from RepairClinic. It all arrived today, and about 60 minutes later, I had a fully functioning dishwasher. Without this video, I would not have tried this myself. Thanks!

My dishwasher just stopped spaying water. It did fill. After running a diagnostic test from a few videos I watched, the code I got was 6 - 4. So I replaced the float switch but my problem was not solved. Then I tried replacing the inlet valve and nothing. Glad I found this video. Bought the parts on Amazon very cheap parts. Others wanted 3x the price.

I'm getting 6-1 errors codes and checked the water inlet valve and float switch and they're both fine. I think the error codes on this thing are not that accurate. Gonna try this now.

Absolutely no reason to take 4 weeks to receive needed parts on anything . Appliances cars trucks you name it. That's a shabby assed parts department that took that long!

Works on Kenmore 66513269K114 Also recommend having a tube of Plumber's Grease on hand. When you reassemble the dishwasher and the dishwasher diverter motor, use some of the grease to reseal the shaft of the diverter with its grommet. Spread it liberally on the grommet and diverter motor shaft, reinsert and secure the diverter motor assembly. Should help prevent leaks.

Avoid no-name pumps. Ensure you buy the exact part and that it is compatible with your washer. I first tried buying a replacement pump on Amazon that looked identical, fit perfectly and was half the cost of the original part. I wish I had checked the model compatibility details. After installation, the pump ran for a couple seconds and then shut down, then tried again for 2 seconds and shut down, etc. After hours researching why this would happen, I ordered the recommended part, installed it and the washer ran perfectly. It turned out that newer dishwashers kickstart their pumps at 120v then drop the voltage to 55v once running. The clone pumps on Amazon and ebay require 120v constantly to run. Check the model numbers carefully if you are buying a no-name pump to ensure the model number matches exactly.

You will also need the hose clamp pliers, but that's not mentioned in the tool list. You won't know it until you're putting it back together and have to leave mid project. Trust me...

Video very good. I had a weird problem. Sometimes the recirculation pump would work after performing a drain then restart. I initially swapped the control board thinking the on signals were being lost with no effect, finally after babying the symptom for two months the cir pump would not spray and swapped it out, problem solved.

Seen another video where they just take the whole sump out from inside the DW, no need to take the whole thing out and put on side etc. What do you think ?
@moconnell663
@moconnell663 3 года назад
Pulling the sump from the inside seems to work on Whirlpool dishwashers with the plastic tub, the sump cannot be removed without uninstalling at least one of the pumps on a KitchenAid with the stainless tub. The drain pump just twists out of the assembly, which makes sump removal possible. But good luck getting your hand on it with the dw installed.

I debated the two methods. I took my dishwasher out and it was very easy to replace the pump when you can reach everything easily.

I have this exact dishwasher. Water fills and drains. The touchscreen lights work and shows that it's doing its cycle. The only thing that's not turning on is the motor. This happened at about 14 months old and I didn't get an extended warranty. Do you think it's the motor assembly that you're changing in the video?

Did any of you that performed this repair run the diagnostic cycle before hand? If so, did it kick out the 4-3 error code (washer motor not running)? I'm certain the washer motor is not running when I run the dishwasher, but it could be the control, the relay, or the motor itself. Problem is, there are no error codes kicked out. All signs suggest the control panel is ok, and I hear clicking a bit after the tub has filled and water inlet solenoid closes. This has me thinking the relay is ok. But it irks me to guess, particularly when the diagnostic cycle should kick out a code. I guess my options are now to actually test the relay and motor for continuity and voltage manually. So much for me mindlessly getting to trust the diagnostic cycle to tell me what to do!! *cry*

My last Kitchenaid dishwasher was 22 years old... I only ever had to change the water inlet valve...that’s it. .... So I bought another Kitchenaid to replace the old one. It is less than 3 years old...and the circulation pump went. LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD. I’m done with Kitchenaid...Whirlpool.. and Kenmore. Start making your parts in North America...and I’ll buy your products again Whirlpool. Until then... adios amigo.
