This is an excellent video. We thought the dishwasher was finally toast but tried this since we had nothing to lose. Inside the pump we found a thumb tack, dental floss, pistachio shells and cherry pits. It's now working like a new machine. You likely saves us a grand. Thanks so much!

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this video. Thank you! We bought a house recently and inherited a kitchenaid that was not cleaning well. Thanks to your EXCELLENT instructions, I opened it up and discovered the problem--no chopper blades at all! 😀

Great, clear and concise video!! I My kitchenaid upper spray was not cleaning the dishes. I viewed several other sites to resolve the issue. I bought new sprayers and installed them. This did not fix it. I came upon your site and you offered trouble shooting options. I loved the way you talked me through the repair process. You answered questions and what if this happens situations while talking me thru the repair. The video made feel as though you were over my shoulder guiding me. I am now a subscriber! Thank you!

Nice video. If the reader is having to clean their food chopper too often as shown in the video, that implies the food chopper is worn out. One might figure out how to tweak it to make things work properly, or buy a new one for $35. For example, my chopper had the retaining plate pop off, so I had to reassembled the cutter, shaft and screen. In the process I tried to make sure it was working right, I did not think to try and sharpen the hardened steel cutter with a Dremel tool while it was apart from the screen. I believe a dull blade would eventually start to bounce away from tough things resulting quick build up seen in the video. The retaining cap is not the easiest to remove, if at all, but one can bend it in order to clamp tight if it does come off. This well done video had close ups that helped me figure out how the chopper went back together, and exactly how readily navigate through the whole job. I am certainly going to try and keep my dishwasher with its stainless steel cabinet running as long as possible, and informative videos like this sure help with that task.

Great input and you are spot on. I finally decided to replace it and I kind of regret the new dishwasher its not as good as this one.

The food chopper assembly was under $20 shipped, and it says it's OEM, so I'm hopeful this is all we need. I worry about the noise it was making, and we shouldn't have continued using it until we had figured it out. It's like driving on the rim when you have a flat tire. No bueno.

Thanks for the share. In my case the shaft the grinder and washer pump run off doesn’t want to spin very well. Years of hard water build up probably caked up minerals in there between shaft and its housing. Lots of buildup everywhere once I took things apart following your video. Can’t see a way to take that shaft out since the entire assembly is encased in a plastic shroud. Will try soaking that sump area in CLR but don’t want to damage any o-rings in the process. I can hear the motor hum when magnetically trying to turn that shaft but no dice. Washer assembly $200 on Amazon. Not all that bad.

Thank you for your video! Saved me some broken parts, time and money, and made the wife happy again without spending $800. If your washer was as bad as mine, I would take the time to take all the arms etc. apart and clean thoroughly. I found all kinds of crap (toothpicks, rocks, sludge etc. in there, including a pair of balls inside the back feed tube, plus, my grinder fell apart in pieces. Luckily it all went back together. Good to go! Bye bye hand washing.

One thing I saw on another video was when you done cleaning the chopper screen theres a little black rubber strip you need to pull up and out and it's like a flapper door that gets debris and it needs to be cleaned while you have it dissembled

Great video - thank you. Similar to you, I've cleaned out the chopper, still dirty after a few weeks. Replaced chopper, and it lasted a month. Just took it apart and cleaned it again. No doubt that's the problem to getting good water flow at top rack. No idea when to call in the professionals - I don't want to be doing this every four weeks!!!

I finally replaced mine entire dishwasher last month. This one lasted about 9 years, I would have like for it to laste a little longer but I got tired of clean this out. It was still working when I sold it on Facebook for $50 bucks but I told the guy about the issue. I am glad we replaced it our dishes are so much cleaner now. I guess for an appliance that you use almost everyday 9 years is pretty good. Thanks for Watching and your kind Words!!!

Nice video!! Sad after taking mine apart and cleaning it out (even found a couple of small sea shells in there) and it still made the loud obnoxious sound :(. Your video was so good that it gave me the encouragement to at least try it! Not so apprehensive now to take on other similar challenges :) Mine is a 2006 Whirlpool Model and identical to yours inside which I thought was very interesting. I didn't have to remove the bar in the back because I saw on another video to just move it to the right clock wise and release it from the bottom piece with the little latch in the back on the vertical piece. I'll subscribe for your other videos ....thanks again!

My Whirlpool, circa 2011, also looks the same. I think Whirlpool makes KitchenAid dishwashers as well as Kenmore and maybe a couple others. Our chopper was missing two blades and a third was on its way out! Machine was very noisy. The last time it was this noisy, we kept using it until it quit making noise. Then the dishes weren't getting clean and we called a repairman who had to replace the whole business down below. VERY expensive. This time I ordered a new chopper assembly and am keeping fingers crossed that the pump is not yet damaged. We found what looked like they were once Q-tips down there and these little plastic dental picks called G.U.M. Our screen filter is intact so no idea how these got so far down into the machine. Thanks for your excellent video!

@@JustADad Thank you for your reply. I have a KitchenAid almost identical to yours that makes a chugging/sucking sound when washing. It also doesn't get the dishes very clean. But if I add water to it, it works great. No chugging sound and dishes come out spottless. The chopper blade is clean and I can't see any other problems. It's an enigma to me. I asked about your water level because after some research I noticed that many of the KitchenAid dishwashers I saw on the net appeared to have the heating element up higher than ours, our dishwashers have a small well that the heating element sits in. I thought maybe the water level needed to be above the heating element on our type dishwasher. But I guess not.

@@dougb.6764 Wow that does seem weird. Maybe that sensor is dirty that I show you to clean, or maybe something is wrong with the float that lets water in. Good Luck, these machines can be very frustrating.
