I never planted any .. ever .. yet the last 2 years I've had a "weed" vine come up along my fence line with spikey melons and I've ripped and chucked them to the chooks.. LOL.. now I know they are edible..this year they can ripen and I'll try them :) I can only assume a birds "pooped" some seeds out while on my fence .. LOL
I've heard you can get up to 100 fruit per bush (recommended to plant 2-3 seeds close to each other). Our spring is just starting and I'm eager to see how many I can grow.
I paid $5.99 for one. I planted some seeds and they’re all growing. I love the taste and the texture, plus it’s a beautiful aesthetic if you cut just the top off. The seeds are encased in a gel-like pod that resembles pomegranate seeds in shape and reminds me of candy. I can’t wait to harvest my own kiwanos.
WOW, I didn't realize how expensive it was. $6.98 in Texas. I picked it up because the grandkids wanted to try it. If they wanted to try something new, I was all for it. From what I'm reading, ours was ripe so it tasted good. Kind of that lemon/limey taste with a hint of banana. It made me think of lime jello with a bit of a banana taste. My grandson and I aren't crazy about the seeds but it's okay. My granddaughter loved it but she loves everything fruit and vegetable wise. My grandson wants to try it in a smoother tomorrow. I believe I will save some seeds and see if we can grow our own.
Bought one of these yesterday at Harris Teeter for $4.99. Never seen one before in my life and now I’m here! Thanks Chef, I now know what’s for breakfast in the morning!
I am growing my own..., my vine is LOADED with fruit, as I have never had it before I was looking for a vid on how to eat it..., NEVER did i think it was that expensive. Thanks..., looking forward to them ripening up.
Super easy to grow, throw a few seeds in a corner of the yard in spring and you'll get melons en mass by the end of the year. they sprawl like mad and takeover swathes if allowed. consider that $8 melon an $8 edible seed packet with cucumbermelons to infinity
They are long lasting alright! I picked a box (14?) about 2 months ago and they are still Green despise having been in the sun for several weeks. Unfortunately they grew out of season on their own, I will try and sow a few seeds in spring (Australia) to see if they do as well and hopefully pick them ripe in summer.

I live in Australia and we have these vines growing in our garden out of nowhere lolz
Chef Buck This fruit tastes very very delicious with sliced cherry tomatoes...So I carved out the kiwano and mixed it with Sliced cherry tomateos , pinch of salt, black pepper, fresh squeezed lime and some italian dressing (one teaspoon) It was Sooooooooooooo YUMMMMMY I think u should try my recipe!
If you have an Asian market near you, you should check it out. They always have tropical and exotic produce at cheaper prices than American or specialty markets.
we live in Seattle, so there is quite a large International district near downtown with several Asian groceries...will check the price of kiwano next time I stop in there....I agree, I've found produce to be almost always cheaper at Asian markets
5.99 in New Jersey. it has a light refreshing taste great for hot weather. a mix between a kiwi and a barely ripe banana. mine was more orange compared to your yellow one.
They are nicer to eat green and you can preserve them They grow very easy from the seeds from the fruit if you just clean them and keep on paper till spring. - Each plant will give up to 100 fruits
kiwano is usually sold with the star fruit ....in that area with the mango and papaya and kiwi...I think star fruit is more popular, though...I guess if it's a sam's club it must be!
That's a crazy price! We got ours free! Lol dude at register couldn't find the code and didn't bother calling anyone. He just just put it in the bag. My son said same thing tastes like kiwi.
I just picked one up to try from Weis grocery in Bloomsburg, PA for $3.99. Dragon Fruit run around $5.99 - $7.99 right now. Lychee and Rambutan are around $4.99 a bag at Walmart to $6.99 at Giant grocery.
Interesting, I've only had 2, but they were definitely more tasty than cucumber. I wasn't that crazy over the mushiness though, but I saved some seeds and the first 2 have just germinated. Gonna see it I can grow me some and might be a good based for juicing.
3.99 ea at Sprouts here in North Texas. 8 bucks is outrageous. Anyway, I cut mine in half opposite than the video shows. I then squeeze into a large bowl starting near where it's cut and work my way back toward the end. I set aside the rind for now. I like to add a small dash of raw cane sugar and drink it from a mug. Now the rinds...the few seeds still stuck in the rind are extracted and then seperated from the little sack they're in. Let them dry and save them for early spring after the last frost. I've got 4 seedlings now and by summer will hopefully have plenty of kiwano to enjoy.
I bought one for 52c in Lanzarote Canary Islands I haven't eaten it yet as I promised to eat it with my friend from Cuba Thanks for the hint on cutting it!
Next time just cut the horns of and leave the skin on, Just put some salt on it and you'll have one of the best times of your life. Most the flavour is in the skin, the inside is watery, because it grows in arid places. We basically call it cucumber where I'm from.
Bought one yesterday because my daughter loves fruits that are “different.” I got one for us to split when she gets out of school. I paid $5.99 here in PA (and this is while inflation is the worst so I feel like I got a really good deal!)
Yes, it was in a Star Treck, but they called it Golana. I just got 5 boxes for free, since I volunteer for a Food Pantry and have to explain tomorrow to my clients what to do with it, so thanks for your video.
2.99 here in Detroit. Orange on the outside, made sure to let it rippen. It's not sweet at all. It's like a bland, seeded jello. If you like seeds, this is for you; but, for normal people, not so much.
Its little things like this that amaze me about this planet. All the varieties of things that live and grow here. Sure, most things are disgusting and deadly, but sometimes you get something good.
The produce manager put 3 in a discount bag for 0.99C. I put the pulp in a 3 hp blender with 2 pomergranets, it made a delicious drink full of crushed seeds.
Funny "camera girl" categorized this as an adventure, as that is exactly why I decided to try mine (on sale for $5)... and I too think I'll be passing on future adventures with this melon(unless I learn it has some fascinating underlying health benefit;)) !
I'm the assistant manager in the produce department at our local grocery store and we sell kiwano, pepino and Dragon fruit. The cost averages between 3.99 and 4.99 and nobody buys these fruits! I have no idea why we continue to carry them. We do how ever sell a lot of bitter melon, opo squash and yucca root. Have you tried them? I'm interested in what your thoughts are.
4.99 in California. To me it's was like a very light cucumber passion fruit. With cantaloupe like seeds. They are alittle hard but edible. I can see it being used as a dressing or to make an agua fresca. But honestly I don't think it has a strong enough taste to be used in much. Using the pulp no seeds in a ceviche could be nice especially serving it in the fruit. My fruit rating 2/5. It's just ok
You guys make such a good pair. 👍Thanks for sharing your experience. I bought one In College out of curiosity and didnt like it one bit. I dont like melons.
I found your video because I was not sure how to cut it. Gave it a go. Mine was around 5.99. I am going to leave the seeds to dry for the animals. Very messy. Difficult to eat and I will stick with strawberries - the not so difficult fruits. It makes a good bowl.
I paid $5 for the Horned Melon and $4 for the dragon fruit. Funny the cashier asked if I was okay paying the $4 for the dragon fruit but she didn't ask if i was okay with the $5 price for the melon. Like this couple I bought them just to try it once.

My friend has just harvested a dozen of these fruits growing wild in her backyard, but they're all green. Are there varieties that can be ripe but still green? I'm from Sydney, Australia.
HAhaha I remember those in Star Trek! It looks like the part of a pumpkin you throw away. You guys made it sound so appetising lol. Spikey Salsa sounds like a winner
Paid $4.99 here in MD because my 10 year old son thought it must be good since it was so damm expensive. It turned out to be the worst thing that we ever tasted. Full of seeds like in cantaloupe. In cantaloupe, we throw away all the seeds and here we had to eat because there was no meat.
