Mirror, mirror on the wall, does being fair mean you have it all?
Netflix Korea's dating show "Single's Inferno" saw worldwide success, becoming the first Korean reality show to enter Netflix's global Top 10 TV Shows chart. But it has also brought to the surface a debate on skin color preference; a sensitive topic in many nations but less so in Korea's largely homogenous society.
In this video, staff at the Korea JoongAng Daily discuss skin color preference in Korea in relation to the popular reality show.

Interesting video---I can understand where you say how can there be racism in Korea if it is basically a one race country, but don't you think there is if you are saying being whiter is better than being your natural color that you were given by GOD? People are put down in Korea and told they are ugly or less attractive than people who are lighter skin. Maybe I am wrong thinking it is racism, but it definitely is colorism and classism---which to me is a form of racism. It's sad to me. I am a person of color and I don't understand the shame of being darker than another person. I partly blame the beauty companies----they love making money off people's insecurities. Whiter, lighter, brighter just puts more money in their pockets. We can't help the color GOD gave us & there is nothing wrong with making improvements to yourself if you are not happy with yourself, but for people to think the fairer you are makes you more superior in any race, country, anywhere in the world is just plain wrong!!

wanting to be whiter has nothing to do with the beauty companies. It has always been seen as an attractive trait in east asian countries and cultures for thousands of years. there are many east asian that are born with naturally fair skin. It has nothing to do with colonialism mentality or wanting to look like a white person as the western media loves to believe *eye rolls

@@Swankdor whatever it has to do with it is ridiculous. Be proud of the color GOD gave you. Weird to me how people want to change the color of their skin to be lighter and it being seen as an attractive trait. If you are born with fair skin so be it. But if you are born with darker skin that means you are less attractive? WTF is that? Why? If you are telling me it isn't to try to look more "white" then why have eye surgery to make your eyes wider & wear contacts to make your eyes look bigger? You are beautiful no matter what color you are---beauty should be based on the person and who they are not based on the fairness of their skin. Ridiculous. Oh & eye rolls back at ya!!

@@marbri10 i agree it on the skin colour part. i just think its really mispresented that ppl think asians wanna look white. on that eye surgery thing.. there are ASIANS WITH NATURALLY BIG EYES! dont be ignorant. this comment is also racist if u truly believe we want big eyes to look white. it is ignorant and disrespectful despite many asians repetitively saying otherwise. *points middle finger at u

@@Swankdor okie doke---whatever you say. I am not racist and never have been. I believe in who you are and loving who you are and I know many Asians have naturally big eyes. I think Asians eyes are beautiful and it is sad to see that many Asians do not (known fact: eye surgery is the #1 cosmetic surgery in Asia). I am a person of color and I am brown skinned---proud of my color and proud of my big eyes, nappy hair, full lips & big ass; as some people stereo type black & brown people as having. I didn't make this up about the fair skin and Asians wanting to change their skin color to very light damn near white skin. If you are saying misrepresentation, blame it on the internet. Blame it on all those makeup tutorials where everyone seems to put on some weird white makeup on their face and neck & go 5 shades lighter than they really are. Blame it on all the shows that say having light skin in Asian countries makes you prettier, more handsome, more acceptable - hell even get you a better job (I've watched plenty of docs on this subject). I know not all Asians want to be like that (Asians in America don't seem to be and so you know my nieces are half Vietnamese and are brown and beautiful). You can point your finger all you want---sorry if I like real people no matter what race, ethnicity or REAL COLOR they are. ✌🖖🤘🤙🖕

@@Swankdor Koreans don’t care about pale skin . Tzuyu is the visual of the nation’s girl groupe and she’s the tannest member. Jennie is also the tannest member of blackpink yet Koreans go crazy about her beauty and praise her more than the others, and rose who’s the palest member got called a visual hole. And im saying this as a pale skinned girl, so it’s not like I’m coping or anything lmao. but this whole “korea put pale skin on a pedestal” seems to just be a myth invented by the internet. It’s bullshit. There are so many pale skinned idols that got called ugly, and dark skinned ones that get constant compliments. No one cares about skintone as long as you have a pretty face and a hot body. I only see ifans talking about it, cause all the Koreans I know don’t give a single shit of how pale or tan you are.
