KKs Priest : Sermons of the Sinner : 2021
Obviously, KK Downing had a point to make and wanted his former employers to know he cannot be ignored and was a big part of Judas Priests success and sound.
This is one hell of an album and I must admit the Judas Priest references in the album title and songs did make me wary but any doubt I had evaporated as the album got underway.
The album opens with Hellfire Thunderbolt and Sermon of The Sinner both of which seem to start where Painkiller left off. However, every era of Judas Priest is explored and it seems to settle in the Stained Class to Defenders of the Faith period.
Sacerdote y Diablo has the same kind of groove that you can find on The Steel from British Steel and the two epics tracks 'Metal Through and Through' and 'Return of The Sentinal' will be in the live set for as long as this band stays together.
KK Downing is not copying Judas Priest, this is who he is and what this makes clear is just how crucial he was to the bands sound.
KK Downing, Ripper Owens, Sean Elg, Tony Newton and A J Mills can be very proud of this album, it really is excellent.

Enjoyed this Phil. KK's situation kind of reminds me of the way Michael Anthony was treated in the latter days of Van Halen. Both artists massively contributed to the sound and success of those bands and yet seem to be shunned. Unfair. But, in the instance of KK, he's making his own waves and this full-on, very impressive and current-sounding album suggests that he has a great future ahead away from Priest and actually doesn't need them. All that being said, however, he should be fully acknowledged in the anniversary celebrations. "More notes being dispensed than a cash point machine on a Saturday night" - loved that description.

@@NowSpinningMagazine I always felt that Ken was underrated when he was in Judas Priest. I had no idea how unappreciated he was until I read his autobiography.

Great thorough review & analysis. Album of the year for me! It's live having 'Priest' back (the Priest whose albums I grew up on, when the band was in their prime). Not exactely the same of course but man is KK and his bandmates on fire..the sound like a youthfull rebelious Priest in spirit with insane guitarleads, intricate bass playing and full-on drumming. To me the current JP sounds 'old' in comparisson. Love JP and Ritchie but indeed KK puts everything up to 11. Enjoying this album very much. Such a loss for JP they ignored KK.

That's a great review. Ken has always been my favourite Priest member due to his emotional and improvisational style, and I have no interest in the Judas Priest material he was not on. I read his autobiography, and he seemed like a down to earth guy who was taken advantage of, mainly due to the fact that he was afraid to be more assertive given his horrible childhood experiences. I'm glad that he was finally able to move past all that negativity and create some of the best classic metal of all time. This album rocks, and there is zero filler on it. All the songs are excellent and flow together perfectly. I'm also happy to be able to hear the bass. The vocals are outstanding too. This album really shows the extent to which Ken is responsible for the classic metal sound. I'm looking forward to the tour and the next KK's Priest album, which he is already working on. You are an excellent guitarist yourself. I really enjoyed the music you played at the conclusion of this video. 🙂

One thing I would mention here Phil is the bass playing on this album. At times Tony Newton just does what Ian Hill does and that's fine. But then, when there is space in the song for it, he adds bass lines that Ian just doesn't play, and it gives the songs an extra dimension.
@NowSpinningMagazine
@NowSpinningMagazine 2 года назад
Hi Chris, thank you for watching and pointing out Tony Newton's bass playing. I have been so focused on the guitars and riffs I forgot about the bass. You are right the bass lines add a lit more depth and interest to the song structures. Phil :)

@@NowSpinningMagazine Hi Phil. I really hope you will be able to interview Ken. If you get a chance, please ask him which brand of valves he prefers. I'm not a guitarist, but my hi-fi uses the same type of valves as a Marshall guitar amp. I'll be in need of new valves soon but don't know which brand to purchase.

If he'd write and make an album with 50% based on 70's style (with a new twist?) and 50% something else, I think that would satisfy some demand. There is a certain oversaturation in 80's and 2000's based Metal if you know whatta mean ;) Cool review.
