Klaus Sperber, known professionally as Klaus Nomi, was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona. In the 1970s Nomi immersed himself in the East Village art scene.

Pretty sure you know this already, but the reason why he looked "pale" in most videos, photos, and etc, was because he always wore make up and basically painted his face white and his lips black. That was an essential part of his image from the start, long before he got ill. What he did incorporate because of his illness were the outfits with the ruffled collars, as they helped him cover the kaposi sarcoma marks he developed around his neck.
