A home DIYer how-to on using the CL390 around the house. This doesn't cover advanced functions that I will never use myself - not an electrician. I got the Klein CL390 from Home Depot.

I just picked this unit up today. I had a fan capacitor go out on my outdoor HVAC unit. I tried to find a cheaper meter that can measure microfarads. After much research this was the perfect unit for the future. Thanks for sharing

I recently discovered that you can detect a live wire or outlet with the tip of the clamp by holding in the orange “SEL” button and touching the wire etc. with the tip of the clamp. Really cool! 👍😊

Yes! SEL / NCV BUTTON (FOR NCV TESTING) Press and hold the SEL/NCV button 12 to enter Non-contact Voltage Testing (NCV) mode to test for presence of AC voltage. The NCV icon and "EF" will be present on the display. Approach the conductor under test leading with the sensing antenna 14 . In the presence of AC voltage, the red NCV light 13 will flash, audible signals (beeps) will sound, and dashes will appear on the display. As the NCV sensing antenna 14 approaches the voltage source, more dashes will be presented on the display and the frequency of the audible sound will increase. Release the SEL/NCV button to exit NCV testing mode NOTE: Only voltages of 40V AC or greater will be detected.

RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS 1. Insert RED test lead into VΩµA jack 5 , and BLACK test lead into COM jack 4 , and rotate function selector switch 2 to the Continuity/Resistance/Capacitance/Diode-Test setting. NOTE: The meter defaults to Continuity testing in this mode. Press the "SEL/NCV" button 12 repeatedly until the resistance icon appears on the display. 2. Remove power from circuit. 3. Measure resistance by connecting test leads to circuit. The meter will auto-range to display the measurement in the most appropriate range. NOTE: When in a Resistance setting and the test leads are open (not connected across a resistor), or when a failed resistor is under test, the display will indicate "OL" This is normal. DO NOT attempt to measure resistance on a live circuit

I have that meter as well as the cl320, cl200, and getting the cl440 cause the 440 reads inrush current and the mm 2,000 they are good meters as is their hand tools also another great hvacr brand meter is uei which I have and own. This brand we used in hvacr school. I prefer these meters as well as ideal and extech for their affordability in price range. The fluke, flair, field piece are sorta snap-on pricey-ish I mean don't get me wrong those mentioned are great meters for their price but I get kinda the sorta the same accuracy with klein, Ideal, uei, extech, Greenlee or any price like of these mentioned meters for an affordable price. I tried to get what I can afford and what works for me. The Uei makes a good backup meter if this in your video is your main meter. Amazon has this brand meter and reasonably priced if you want a good or decent backup meter. Like the video sir and demo of the meter.

You must be in a professional Electrician/HVAC field to own all those meters. For a DIY guy, this should be the only meter ever needed for life.

Very nice review of the CL390. I bought one from HomeDepot after seeing your review. Just have one question. Is it normal to see a non-zero value when you set the dial to DC Amp and SELected DC. I get values ranging from 0.97 to 1.0 even if the leads are not touching anything.

I'm new to this stuff. Would this be good for a homeowner doing DIY small electrical projects?
@DrBDIY
@DrBDIY Год назад
I was new, big reminder: Safety first. I am not an electrician but an IT guy and DIY. I have learned a lot though doing projects. This multi-tool is great. Once you practice using, following the video, and reading the little booklet, I expect it will suffice all your homeowner needs. You will always need AC checking for plugs. You can use DC to check batteries. The current checker is great and most regular mult-tools will not have that feature. You can press the button just to see if current is present. I use the thermometer occasionally. Lately I have been using the Amp meter to see why new freezer is running all of the time. It will be a good tool for you IMO.

You can use the holder on the right clamp for the red lead and then hold the other in your hand this way one of your hands is further away and also holding plastic of meter its safer ish..

NCV - Non contact voltage. This option measures voltage not current. Meter displays it as EF - Electromagnetic Field or EMF - Electromotive Force. Since there is nothing connected to receptacle reading would be 120V and 0I

I really used the current measuring aspect when I had problems with outdoor freezer running fan / compressor.

Maybe your unit is bad. However it is possible for battery to read lower if it is going bad or depleted.

@DrBDIY
@DrBDIY Год назад
MaxMin is used to detect maximum and minimum readings where you may have variability in the readings for voltage, current, resistance, temperature, and DC μA. Lets just try to get variability in 120 V. Turn your Klein CL390 from Off to V. By default, it is Auto Volts shown on the screen. Insert your black/red probes into a power outlet, lets say 120V in the USA. You should see some reading like 119, 120, 121 etc. Now push MaxMin button. You will see a maximum reading that only updates if the tool sees a higher reading. Then push MaxMin again and you will see the minimum reading that the tool sees and will only change if it sees a smaller reading. Now push MaxMin a third time and you will see the difference (max - min) reading. So you are in MaxMin mode. If you press MaxMin again, it will just toggle between Max, Min, max-min. To get back to Auto V mode, just hold MaxMin for 2 seconds and you will see Auto again. Hope that helps.

Anybody know how to turn off the timer? The meter shut down 5 min if you didn’t touch it. And the beeping sound is too loud and sharp.
@DrBDIY
@DrBDIY 2 года назад
"By default, the meter will automatically power OFF after 5 minutes of inactivity. If the meter automatically powers-OFF while in a measurement setting, press any button to power the meter ON, or rotate Function Selector 2 switch to OFF, then power ON the meter. To deactivate Auto-Power OFF functionality press and hold the "SEL/NCV" button 12 before powering ON from the OFF setting. When Auto-Power OFF is deactivated, the Auto-Power Off icon will not be visible in the display."
