Not too long ago the Klein Tools VDV kit was upgraded to include PoE, which the previous Scout Pro3 didn't have. Confused? Then follow along as we take you through all the buttons and demo some of its many features. If you are doing any sizable Voice, Data or Video cable work this is one kit to consider.

Nice review of a great tool!! I have the non-PoE version myself, but the newer one is on its way and I’m looking forward to it! A helpful tip with regards to a feature you mention at time stamp 6:12 and onwards: Long press (more than 2 seconds) the ethernet button (or any of the top row VDV buttons) to turn on the loop function... the display will briefly say "LOOP ON" and the tester will then update/test continuously. This info is well hidden in the manual (and for intuitive tools like this, hardly anyone reads them), but it’s there. You can long press again to turn loop off, or just turn off the tester. Default when you power it on, is loop off. "LOOP ON" is very helpful for intermittent failures and would quickly change to a fail reading if you disconnect (or cut) the wire and come back if you plug it in again. I needed this to diagnose faulty sockets which gave intermittent short circuits because of an unfortunate placement of the spring that would close the shutter. The coil of the spring would contact the soldering joints for IDC 4 and 7 and create a short circuit, but with loop off, it was almost impossible to catch that. I wish the loop could be set to come on by default, but it can’t as far as I know. But it’s there, so both ways are indeed available! I hope you find this helpful!! 😊

Torbjørn Fjeld, indeed a great tool and while not an everyday tool for me, it did solve some wiring issues very quickly. Thank you for explaining how to enable the LOOP function and make this tool even more useful. Always great to be able to share and learn from others. Hope you enjoy the new version.

I used to have a Fluke DSP-4300 cable analyzer which would tell you which end the issue is on this tester as you found this tester will not tell you which side since the numbers on the top of the connector are fixed 1 - 8 and will never change. So my suggestion is once you test the wire and find it is not wired correct to just check the wiring on the main side first since you are there. If that looks good then go to the remote side and check there. If the issue was on the main side then you fix it you can then retest since you still have the remote plugged in at the remote side. Nice video presentation.

I like to shoot a tone off the open pair and see if I can pick it up a ft or 2 past the termination. If I pick it up still then most likely it's on the other side. Of course that only works with open pairs and not reversed.

I bought this tool just the other day VD501-853 model. Only add on I would of loved to see is you can control the speed of the Switch/Hub light blinking. Other than that it's perfect for me. This unit also tells you what wiring config is used. Over all worth the money. Far better than the $20 tester.

How can I identify if my jr45 jacks in my new home are set to T568A or T568B. I took a picture of one of them, but I can't tell anything from the picture. I ask this because I may have to re-do all of them (about 8 or 10) and I don't know how much spare ethernet cable I will have inside the wall. If it is not much, I have to be very careful when I wire the cables with a new and better jr45. Thank you.

Probably the Klein units only scans or samples once the function key is pressed. Perhaps a protection feature that disconnects the meter. Not to my liking because a continuous scanning or sampling could reveal faults like intermittent issues.

Was wondering if anyone has the answer here - in the instruction manual it says in bold letters "DO NOT" attempt to use the hub blink function when connecting to a POE port. However, they do not say WHY. Elsewhere in the manual, they say if you plug a POE into the standard RJ45 port on the device, a power icon will come up with an arrow pointing to the POE port. It doesn't. But it almost leads me to believe that you could use the POE port with hub blink. It didn't work for me, but the standard port using hub blink DOES work - it's just they say DO NOT do that and I would like to know why. Perhaps it will fry the unit? Really, the hub link is the awesome feature I need - but I have all POE switches.

I have the 852 version and I love it. Having remote testers for tracing multiple runs at once saves SO much time. I also don't like the coax port sticking out the way it does, but what bugs me the most is that you can't re-attach the bottom terminator with an adapter barrel screwed on. I'd rather have those already on and take them off when needed than the other way around. Aside from that, it's a great kit.
