I bought my 2001 KLR from a mechanic who installed a 14-tooth front sprocket on it when he owned it. After one ride I immediately switched it to the stock 15-tooth. The 14 is good if you are doing lots of off road riding, but if you plan on doing much pavement riding I would suggest the stock 15-tooth. It will be good for both on and off road. I am prepping my KLR for long ride (about 90% of it highway) and plan on putting a 16-tooth on it then for less rpm's and more top end at highway speeds. As for burning oil, mine has 20K miles on it and Ive yet to burn ANY oil. I guess I got a good one... so far.

Its mostly the 2008+ that have issues with oil consumption

Yup, I have an 07' that doesn't burn any at all. Pretty sure it's just mainly 08-09.

dude, wait till you check the valves and roll the exhaust cam back 1 tooth! the front will come up all the time! I did mine the other day and was surprised how much difference it made, lots more felt torque. I think I will also go with a 14 and see if that helps control slow speed riding. I hear there is a 12 tooth you can get off some quad-runner that fits too for really serious off road fun!

Seems like kawi pretty much got it right for a 50/50 dual sport as far as the sprockets go. 16 seems a bit too high for offroad and 14 is too low for the highway.

Man...the audio sounds great! Your wife should sell those things. I need to get a smaller front sprocket on my XR as well. Definitely the best cheapest mod one can do!

About to swap mine to a 14t,also ordering a 15 and 16t.for longer highway rides

FYI In my opinion it's harder for a car coming out from the right when your lane position is RT. Side of right lane, (I think I'm sensitive to it as it cost me my leg years ago.

Update: Installed the 16-tooth front sprocket for highway riding. PRO's: I found that I lowered my RPM's by almost 1,000. My KLR runs smoother with less vibration in the handlebars and has more top end for longer rides. CON's: Off road I have to keep it in a gear lower or changing gears more than I would normally have done before. But since my riding is 80/20 highway/off road riding, I'll stick with the 16-tooth. If you plan on doing LOTS of off road then go with the 14- tooth. If you plan on doing about 50/50 or more riding in town, stay with the stock front sprocket.

Thats exactly what i did, more on than off road so had to go 16

+James Last The first accessory for any bike is to spend the money to get every sprocket, 14 to 18 (14,15,16,17,18) and then 38 to 64, skipping about 3-4 teeth at a time on the rear sprockets (38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 60, 64) You can find cheap sprockets on Amazon or other places and just get one when you find it cheap. Aluminum is lighter and steel lasts a long time, so either one is good. Start with your stock set, like 16-45 or something, then get a 14, a 54, then a 18 and 39 for highway riding. You can break your chain to have 4 master links, to make the chain whatever length needed. pieces of chain with 5 and 3 links will allow 3, 5, and 8 links shorter. There are two great reasons for low gearing; Wheelies, and slow-riding, such as the Japanese U-turns when getting a motorcycle endorsement. The tight runs are much easier under power, and you can be under power and hardly going at all with a 14-64 setup, allowing acceleration in those tight turns without going fast

I only have the 16-tooth on the front. That's all I'm buying and staying with.

the new klr are nice and are better stock than the older ones. The new klx250 is nice too and has almost identical hp as the wr now and has better suspension than it used to have on the 2014 and before. Kawasaki is doing well. We just need a klx 450 and everything will be grand

suprisingly, peppier is a word If you have a KLR with an oversized D606 on it, a 14 is a must for trail riding. I did the same thing.. new sprocket, old chain. But we weren't replacing it because it was worn, just because we wanted to... so it's not the same I don't think.

Its about a 400-500 rpm increase regardless of speed. My klr doesn't burn oil that i've ever noticed. But most of my riding is under 65 mph. I am not easy on the throttle. I run rotella oil.

I just did the same and, boy am I glad I did. It help tremendously on the steep hell climbs! :) Only dif is I rarely hit the streets, so I don't mind loosing some top speed :D

I wouldn't go any smaller than a 14 on the front, you don't want to wad up a chain through the case. You can always go larger on the rear also.

mostly its the Gen II bikes that burn the oil (especially the 08's) My 07 hardly burns any between changes. if I understand it correctly the cylinders they used were flawed, they knew it, and used them anyway...

crazy man , my klr under 4000 rpm , no oil burning , but if i hit it hard, 5500+ it burns like an animal, it's a known problem with klr, and im not talling you what to do , but if you don't check you might want to start checking your oil level. you might be in for a surprise or you have the only klr that doesn't burn oil in the world . to cure it the only thing that works it the 685 kit, youtube it, you will see , a lot of videos about it
@SovaKlr
@SovaKlr 11 лет назад
Well the front sprocket is the cheapest part of the set so if you're going to replace one twice that's the one to do

The 08 were bad but mine is a 2005 and i have couple of friends with 02 and 10 , and same thing, mine holds the record on burning oil but has the least miles. Stupid .

I have a pre 96 with retainer plate. I purchased a 16t to reduce my 17t. There were a bunch of shims behind the 17t sprocket. My question is, did you have to install a bunch of shims behind the new sprocket? And, how do you tell if the teeth are ligned up properly? I have a sunstar sprocket which has a different shape and thickness than the 17t. I never had an OEM front sprocket so I don't know the procedure. Do I just add enough shims until the front of the sprocket presses against the retainer plate? Also, what is the torque for the retainer plate bolts?
@vegasromaniac
@vegasromaniac 11 лет назад
whats the rpm for the speed you get !? give me a couple of numbers , i would love if you give me 55 60 and 65 mph , and the RPM relative to speed also Is your bike burning oil, how much and after what rpm ! i have a hard time with mine, burning oil after i pass the 5000 rpm, on my last trip 350 miles off-road , kept it on the highway for about 150 miles and burned 20 ounces of oil. I can't wait for you answer .

one tooth is not much at all, you need a 60 rear sprocket to have that creep-crowd gear for tight woods

+Oklahoma ADV I ride a 03 KLR,with a rejett/klx needle Lexx pipe and Uni filter which is supposed to even the difference between a gen 2 model,my bike will pull away from my friends 2010 model at any rpm,he's pissed because he paid twice as much for his bike and my 03 will outrun his 2010.
