Contact Ron, He will not do you wrong.
This is how I use the sharpener and what works for me. You find what works for you and run with it.
In this video I'm showing how to re profile a knife 50-1500 grit Diamonds. Using the Arkansas Translucent and 1 Kangaroo strop with 4 Micron CBN Emulsion. Getting a good mirror edge and razor sharp results.
Thanks for watching

I noticed on some knives (particularly 940 Osborne) the blade would move as I tightened it down and then definitely more when I started sharpening so I put painters tape on the blade where the clamp goes and it seems to have solved the problem

KnifeKrazy, thanks for the video. Ron and Ms. Bernice are awesome and as Ron told me on the phone, this ain't rocket science. I was making too much out of it. Your video fixed me up. This is a great product and you do a great job of showing "newbies" the proper technique. I purchased the Kit with 4 diamond stones and I also bought the base. After trying to re profile my old buck 119, I got frustrated, called Ron with my problem and bought the 100 grit, watched your video and am completely satisfied. Thanks for your help. Ron, if you see this, you have made an awesome product and are great to work with. People, don't worry about the price American made quality, great customer service, and people like KnifeKrazy to help as well.

I have a question sir. I go through the progression of 140-300-600-1500, but when I get to the 1500 grit stone it seems to crumble the edge. Through the rest of the stones it gets sharp, but when I finish off with the 1500 it seems like little chips in the blade. I would appreciate any help. I’m using light pressure as well

Hey man great video. Subscribed. I am a complete novice to sharpening. Do you think this would be what I need to start sharpening? Or should I start on something else. I am planning on purchasing the base model that currently includes a strop. I also was planning on adding 4 micron cbn. Do you think I should add anything else to start or would this be a good starter set up? Thanks
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 8 лет назад
+Anderdale2 Thank you. I think this would be a great starter kit. If you see yourself reprofiling edges you might want to get the 100 grit and maybe the 50 grit. If you are just sharpening at the same edge that the blade came with then you should be fine. The starter kit will get you a razor sharp knife. If you are looking at getting a mirror edge you will need to add other items. But you can do this as you go. Get good at sharpening the knife first, before you move on to mirror edges. That's a whole different ball game. Remember the word "BURR" you must get a burr on each side before you flip the blade. This is sharpening 101. No matter what why you are sharpening.
@Molokairider
@Molokairider 9 лет назад
I enjoy my kme kit as well. My current issue is deciding what angle best suits a given blade. I just sharpened a Rat1 at 17 degrees and now I'm wondering if that is too shallow. It slices well but now I'm uncertain if it's too weak.
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 9 лет назад
+Molokairider A good rule of thumb is, stay at or around 20 degrees. I think this will give you your best EDC edge. Thanks for the comment

Not sure about yours but mine leans about 2-3 degrees just sitting on it's post. if you are setting zero on the base your angles might be off by a few degrees. not sure how to set a true zero but i been zeroing out on the underside of the blade and measuring the top side and dividing in half. Also if you are grinding until the burr on one side first you actually ground it twice as far as it needed to go. Recommend switching sides every few passes to find the edge evenly between both sides together. And one more thing is it helps to use some soapy water spray with the diamond hones.

I have a delica 4 and according to my sharpmaker one side is 20 degrees but the other is a bit steeper, only sharpens at the edge using the sharpie test, maybe 18 or 19 degrees. If I want both sides right at twenty would this be considered reprofiling? And would I need a coarser diamond stone than the xc-140 which comes in the basic kit?
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 7 лет назад
I'm assuming you're talking about the VG 10 version Delica. Yes that would be reprofile/profiling. If you have the VG 10 the 140 can do it but, it will take longer than it would if you used the 100 or 50 grit.
@dp2826
@dp2826 7 лет назад
Yes, this one is VG 10. I guess I will pick up the 50 and 100 along with the kit, as I'm sure I will need them soon enough. Love your videos, keep it up! Thank You!

dp2826 In a pinch, you can use double sided tape to stick a strip of 100 grit wetdry paper to the flat face of one of the 140 stones. Lube with a little soapy water. Clean the adhesive off with soap/hot water and a soft bristled toothbrush. They do make sticky backed sandpaper

I tell ya what, it was well worth watching this video, just to see that knife so silently, effortlessly & smoothly cut that deep S-curve in that phone book paper. THAT is impressive.......and makes me wonder why in the world anyone would even consider a different system vs this KME Sharpening System. I have been totally convinced for well over a year now, that THIS SYSTEM is head & shoulders above ANY other system on the market today. No cheap plastic frame.......all steel & solid cherry wood......and ZERO margin of deviation from your precise set honing angle, thanks to that killer spherical bearing that the rod passes through. This system is so precise, you can even use it without its base. TRY THAT with any other system & still keep your precise working angle! I would still buy & use the base of course. All the other systems on the market still have the chance of deviation & movement. Of course some common sense is still needed, like using that angle finder device when switching to different stone thicknesses while still sharpening the same knife, but that's par for the course. Whenever I get around to buying a sharpening system, it WILL be this KME system. It's well worth every dollar spent. I enjoyed your video, and just subbed your channel too. Thank you!!!

I also just recently got a KME system. I notice 2 things in your video that differ from what KME says to do: 1) you do not seem to use any water with the diamond stones. Their booklet says to use a drop or 2. Probably not a big deal, just noticed it though. 2) you do not seem to ever do an "into the edge" sharpening step with any of the stones. KME shows doing a few swipes into the edge, and then many 1 on each side "into the edge" passes. Is there any reason you do not do that? PS. Happy New Year! Love your videos. Learning a lot and becoming addicted to sharpening now that I have a system that really works for an amateur!
@KnifeKrazy.

+Sam Schorr You don't have to do either of those. The more you start to use the system you will find what works for you. As long as you are doing the must do things you will be fine. @KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 8 лет назад
+cryptomnesiac Ok. Is the PM2's edge in good shape? If so, you should be able to get a great edge with those stones. Start with the 140 grit and don't stop using the 140 until you have the edge the way it needs to be. Work the one side until you have a burr on the entire edge. Then switch to the other side and repeat. Then work the bevels until they are symmetrical on both sides or until you are happy with it. Then you can change stones and work your way up in the grits. Make sure you are working both sides equal amount of strokes and finding your burr in every grit. Then strop.

Hi, I recently got the KME and am very happy with it. I am however having issues with the angle reading. I am using the Gold series diamond stones and also the thicker surgical black. I have the igaging angle cube, and find that regardless of the blade size (spyderco, mora, victorinox) the angle cube reads 2.5 degrees less than the KME angle reading. The angle cube gives dead on readings on other known surfaces or angles. I also checked the angle with the app on my phone and it is roughly the same, 2-3 off. Is it possible that something is wrong with the KME? Any ideas? Have you experienced this?

Just make sure you don’t skip any grits. When you switch stones make sure you work it enough to remove the scratch pattern from the last stone. Even after doing all this correctly you will still have some light scratches. Grit will leave scratches.

What you have coming in, will do just fine. You don’t need water stones. I always do Diamonds>full set of lapping films>0.1 strop. I’m happy with the results.

speaking of the pm2, how does the clamp work on a flat ground blade? As there's no flat part of the blade to clamp on to.
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 7 лет назад
The clamp has rubber inside. It forms around it. Just put the blade in the clamp as even as possible.

I have the basic kit and would now like to order more stones. I'll need the lower grit stones for (re)-profiling, but to go above ... could you recommend a grit progression to go to a mirror polish? After the 1500 diamond, I could get the whole set of Choseras, which top out at 10,000. I'm familiar with waterstones from freehand sharpening, and I like that system. Say I go that route. Then after the 10,000, what would you recommend?
@KnifeKrazy.

I would just get the Lapping Film set. After the 1500 diamond work your way through the lapping films.

I noticed you are often taking angle measurements w/ degree cube. You are taking angle degree left to right (east/west). Just wondering if you should also take north/south measurement , since tool is on swivel. Just wondering if this additional extreme accuracy is necessary? Meaning taking more angles than you advised.
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 8 лет назад
+randal norris As long as you make sure you take the measurement in the same direction everytime you're fine. Consistency.
@randalnorris8068
@randalnorris8068 8 лет назад
Yes Sir , but you also need to leave the blade in same position as measurement taken. By being on swivel , you would not want to deviate side to side. Correct?

Not sure why im not getting the same angle. I only used lite strokes with the pink Arkansas stone right now, dont want to go at it with a heavier one until I figure this angle issue out.

@@KnifeKrazy. ok Have a question though. Say I put the sharpie on the edge and have to set my kme to 20 on one side to wipe off the sharpie and when I flip it I have to go to 25 before it removes the sharpie fully on that side. When I sharpen do I keep the angle set for 20 and just work on the 25 side until a bit forms ? Or work on that side until the bevel looks the same and then start moving to the finer grits?
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 5 лет назад
sawtoothscream 1 If you start at 20degree, you need to stay on 20degree. Do not change the angle when you flip it. Lots of factory angles are not right. Also make sure the blade is even in the clamp. Blades that don’t have a flat spot on the blade where the clamp goes. Can cause this issue.

I was just about ready to pick up this system but i noticed it only goes down to 17 degrees. Does this mean I won't be able to retain my factory edge of 30 degrees inclusive on my Paramilitary 2's?
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 7 лет назад
I've never seen a factory bevel on a PM2 at 15 degrees. Most Spyderco's are around 20 degrees per side. Plus the 17 degrees on the KME is lower the farther the edge is away from the end of the jaw. The numbers in the KME is about the angle. You can also get lower by turning the ballpoint slide upside down. Be careful you will start to hit the jaw at that angle.
@mike7958
@mike7958 7 лет назад
Ok. Well i guess the real question is, if i want a 15 degree bevel on the PM2, can i achieve it with the KME? Or am i going to be grinding down the jaw before i ever hit the edge of the blade.
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 7 лет назад
You should have no problem doing 15 degrees on the KME.

Are you supposed to lube the kangaroo strop before you use it? Can you use it dry?
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 4 года назад
I wouldn’t call it lube. It needs to have CBN Diamond emulsion or a polishing paste. I guess theoretically you could use it dry. But for best results and a shiny edge, you would need one of the top two items.

If you were going to touch this knife up after completely reprofiling it with the 50 grit all the way up. What diamond would you start with or would you do any of the diamonds. Just the trans and the strop or just the strop?
@KnifeKrazy.
@KnifeKrazy. 7 лет назад
It depends how dull you get the knife before you touch it up. If it dull you can start with the 140 or 300. I wouldn't go all the back to the 50. If it's still sharp you could do the 1500, trans or just a strop might do it.

I have the kit from when it was first offered and have the limited stones. I can't for the life of me stop the stones from putting hairline scratches on the blade without taping the entire blade and then using the stone to eat the tape away at the edge. Have you had any issues with this?

@footdickbubblehair

Thanks, makes sense. Also, this may be a dumb question(s), but when you're using the angle cube, how do you know that you're on the knife's exact edge just by placing the stone on the blade? Are you that experienced that you can just tell? Seems like I'd have to constantly adjust the KME and use something like a marker to make sure I'm hitting the whole edge before using the angle cube to determine what the edge is currently set to. And lastly, my angle cube reading changes based on where I attach it to the arm. How do I know which reading to use, or do you just make sure you put it in the same exact spot each time? I love the idea of this setup and I have gotten edges shaving sharp pretty easily, my biggest issues are knowing what angles I need to use and how to ensure I use them.
@footdickbubblehair
@footdickbubblehair 7 лет назад
Example: Here is my Skyline after I ran through all my stones and I'm now on the original thicker white one. I adjusted it to be as close as I could to the angle I've been sharpening at (about 15 degrees) and after I put a mark on the blade, I see that it's not getting to the very edge. Due to the flexing of the KME it's not possible to get the angle down to the hundredth of a degree every time, so is that the difference and I just have to keep powering through? imgur.com/ZI40OxO
