So true. I'm in my fifties and I noticed that I was totally losing my glutes. I'm sure it started happening long before my fifties but who can see themselve from behind, right. Anyway, I developed knee problems in my late forties. In the last year I've started focusing on my glute muscles and boy have I been feeling better. My knees are getting better and just my over all well being has significantly improved. I'm just amazed. I believe the glute mucles are so important to maintain especially as we age because we tend to lose them.😕
You have helped me so much thank you! I can’t do my job anymore without having to leave early as I’m immobile. I was sent home countless times from the hospital. I was told by therapist I had bursitis but didn’t fully understand it or how to fix it. I can’t wait to try your exercises
I am so glad this video showed up in my feed! I’m 70 years old, never having had a knee issue until last month when X-rays showed “mild suprapatellar synovial effusion.” Doesn’t feel so “mild”. My dr. hasn’t been very helpful besides referring me to PT, which gave me exercises like just what you described. Even the exercise directions refer to the leg that had surgery (which mine hasn’t). Super helpful and informative video. I’ll be looking at the related ones you’ve linked to. Thank you!
This video is awesome. I’ve been diagnosed with both bursitis and patellofemoral pain syndrome. Mild edema in the prepatellar subcutaneous tissue per MRI report and per orthopedic. MRI report also indicated mild effusion in the patellofemoral joint but orthopedic said it was normal joint fluid? Almost 8 months of this problem. PT focused on quads and hamstrings plus balance exercises. Been adding glute exercises to my daily routine but sounds like I should stop exercising my quads all together.

Hi. I just wanted to make a quick comment. I've been doing a bit of self-diagnosing for a knee pain that suddenly came about and that is how I ran into your channel. I've embarked on this strength training journey and I think I hurt something while maybe doing this. My pain is only when squatting, going down the stairs, or while standing up. It isn't anything too crazy, but it is painful, no swelling though. It's more toward the top of the knee, and does not hurt when in a kneeling position. There's lots of squats on this strength series I'm following. The pain is only on my right side. I think you did a great explanation about this. Everything I was looking at was people talking about a meniscus tear or tendinitis or Patellar Tendonitis or patellofemoral pain syndrome. But you're the only one that mentioned knee bursitis and explained it well. I was hoping this pain would just go away on its own but it doesn't seem to based on your video. Maybe I should go see a doctor. Should I ask my primary doctor for a referral to PT?
Thanks for the info. everything you talk in the video from glutes to feet is affecting my knee. Thank You so much. too bad you office is located a day or 2 from my home. I'll check the program you mentioned in the video. Thanks again.

Yeah... PT today just made mine 500% worse than it was this morning. My glute exercises had been helping. Until I think PT worked my glutes until they stopped, and my mega quads took over. Until my knee went OH HELL NO and now instead of being able to do pretty much any motion with minor discomfort, sitting on a toilet hurts. Here I thought I was going to PT for preventative care :(
The same thing just happened to me! You are not alone. My knee was doing better. I was able to weight bear almost 40%. I even was able to clean some of the house. Then PT this past Monday jacked me up real good showing me a new knee exercise. Searing pain when I did it and now I can't bear any weight at ALL...for the last 3 days. I feel your pain AND I told them I'm not doing PT anymore. 3 months of this shit...😢
@@Xtina2525 I asked for a new person. Was going okay until they revealed themselves as an antivaxxer. May be a different part of medicine, but I have no tolerance for that lack of ability to use critical thinking skills. Completely untrustworthy. So back to a new PT person.... again. At this point I generally know the exercises I need to do, and just need someone to spot me so I don't let myself get lopsided without myself noticing >.
@@questgivercyradis8462 It's definitely been an uphill battle. Don't get me started on the ortho doctor...I'm planning to take some time to see if this new symptom subsides before even attempting PT again. My chiropractor has been helping to readjust my knee and my back and it's helping. I was out of alignment to boot. My life has basically just been on crutches in the house and going to doctor's appointments. 😔 Sorry to hear that you were hurt at PT too. Unfortunately I think a ton of people go through this. We are just not getting the right exercises for our injuries. I feel like sometimes our intuition is a better doctor than any stupid doctor or physical therapist. I'm getting bitter as you can tell LOL
Just finished my MRI this morning. Hopefully they will be able to find out why my knees are hurting so bad. Especially at night while sleeping. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for the clear explanation. Two days ago when I went to see my chiropractor for the exact same issue, he also pinpointed to the week glute muscle. I totally get your logic and the reasoning, but still have one more question regarding an important detail, which is, will long term exercise on glute muscle will remove or reduce the inflammation? I can certainly apply ice to it, in conjunction with the glued exercise, do you think the inflammation will go away? if so, how long it will take usually?
Thank you for this video. I’m a RN and I was squatting down starting some IV’s and drawing labs. I was also running up and down the stairs to get to different floors. Next thing you know when I was heading home, the top of my knee was hurting and swollen. I believe it’s suprapatellar bursitis because now it hurts to even bend my knee. I started back working out in September and have lost 42 pounds. But I’m going heavier on my weight training and I’m wondering if I’m not working glutes enough? Maybe that’s what caused the imbalance?
Hi i hurt my knee at work. I was on my knee working up and back down on my knee last time,I had felt a sharp pain. I walked it off. 15 min later my knee starts to swell. An hour late its so swollen that I couldn’t walk. Went to the er had X-ray test was good. Nothing broken. They refunded me to the ortho. Ultrasound good. Blood test good. Growing inpatient with my ortho. This didn’t diagnose the issue. Plus canceled my appointment yesterday on me. Next appointment in a week from today. My question is my knee was swollen above the knee cap on the day of the injury. The day after the fluid traveled from the knee to the thigh all the way down to the calf and ankle. Would bursitis do this? My wife and I believe this is bursitis. But haven’t been diagnosed yet.
Quick question: Can a knee brace help with any of the knee bursitis you had mentioned? I recently irritated my inner bursitis on both knees during a run. Thankfully, after a couple of days of rest, the swelling and pain have decreased, but know I'm thinking of wearing a knee brace for more support while i recover. What is your opinion?
I will get MRI results tomorrow but I’m seriously wondering if I have this from what you describe as symptoms. Sounds like an MRI won’t show it. Any way to get a definitive diagnosis? The only reason I’m doubting is because I’ve been in a high quality rebounder for about a year and feel like I’ve done some good glute work. If anything my quads seem weak? How much do your programs cost if I decide to go that route?😊 one more question, is it common to have periodic throbbing pain in the patella area at rest with this?
Thank you for all your helpful videos! Can knee bursitis cause the knee to buckle that causes knee pain? I feel my knee area is swelled and trying to use glutes to walk better but every once in a while I can buckle when walking and it feels my knee is not moving in the direction it needs to and causes the painful buckling which sets me back from healing. Thank you
I have had a knee issue for 3.5 years on front medial side. I sort of limp now,...... Only yesterday do I realize by feeling it that the back of my knee is not smooth there, like swollen lumpy, but it does not hurt there at all when I press on it. My other knee is smooth there so there is a real difference. Can you tell me what this might be on the back side of my knee. After all this time, I only now realized this. Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I do Brazilian Jujitzu and put a point load on both sides…both knees. I also walk a tremendous amount! I will be doing glut exercises and retraining myself how to walk! Icing my egg shaped bursitis now. Is there any truth to bursitis being deadly or leading to a blood infection? Thank you for all that you do and share!
Hey @prettifulmuffin, you are welcome! We are glad you found this video useful! Knee braces are very helpful in general when it comes to properly offloading your arthritic knee. However, if you find yourself in discomfort because of your bursitis, you could opt into offloading your painful knee with something like a cane or crutches. Just in case you need it, here is a link to the Knee Arthritis Recovery Program: epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/knee-arthritis-recovery-program Hope this helps! Keep us posted on your progress :-)
What about burning on the outside of my left knee. 62 year old. Been experiencing this with Kneeling is very much a burning pain. I cannot do this it burns to much. Right knee is fine. Just the left outside of my knee cap. Using turmeric and magnesium to control inflammation. My job is a pet grooming active each day. Sitting as I groom pets. I Carry them about through the grooming process. Thanks for any help.
Thank you for this informative video. I have had both my knees replaced and have developed bursitis in both my knees. I'm in constant aching pain and sometimes when I move my knees to the left or rignt it feels like my knees are trying to dislocate. I cannot sleep sometimes because of the pain, sitting can be painful, trying to do other activities is painful. I have swelling on the inside of my left and right knees. I have had my left knee drained three times, it seems to help for about 2 months and then I need to have it drained again. What advice can you give me at this point?
I fallow you on you tube & I had learn so much from your video For over two month I start having problems with my right knee . It started with Baker’s cyst & then inflammation on all my knee. Orthopedic injected hydrocortisone the aspirated fluid three times followed by hyaluronic acid three . times I just started with PT & he says that is my walking due to Bonions . The pain now are very sharp on the inside of my knee when I take stairs . Do you have any advise . Thank you for all the informations . ❤
Thank you, I think I have the bursitis, been going for over 1.5 years now. As the result, my quad muscle on the injured side has atrophied significantly. I still try go the gym doing leg extension for the quad, plus glute excercises. I wonder if I should still do the leg extension?
Hey Mary, the quads will atrophy in some cases but can still be the dominant muscle group and put too much pressure through the knee joint. Working on glute strength is still important. Even ignoring the quads until the knee is healthy again is ok. Once you've had a good amount of time without knee pain, then working on the quads would be okay. But you'll slow down your progress if you work on your quads now.
@@epmanualphysicaltherapy THANK YOU for your kind response and the valuable explanation!!! I will stop the leg extension and just focus on the glute excercises until my knee heals. Thanks!
Hi can a direct fall on both kneecaps cause a infrapatellar bursitis? Watched your 3 signs of meniscus videos they dont relate to me. I had black knee caps for 4 months , xrays good no arthritis but have to wait for orthopedic surgeon 4 to 6 months for meniscus tear which I think I don't have , looking for other options. Doing your glute exercises and tailgate swinging has improve my knees lots. Have full mobility but some quad pain leading to my knee when they get tired. Thanks B. Ps my kneecaps are dented !
Hey B, yes a direct fall on your knees can certainly cause infrapatellar bursitis! Especially if you were left with bruises for 4 months!!! I'm so glad that you're improving in your knees!!! Get those glutes stronger so you can take more pressure off your knees for the long-term!

i have pain in all the areas you pointed at, but no noticable swelling. Please HELP.......I keep getting the same exercises and run into a wall where i have to stop because the pain get´s worse.
wow, super helpfull! i have what i assume is Pes Aserine bursitis in both knees. my knees can totally lock up (and painfull) when on a descent on a hike or sometimes if im just waling up and down too many stairs. but always in the descent. im wondering if doing strength training for my hamstrings would be beneficial along with glute strenghening. this, is all assuming its bursitis i have on both inner knees , 3 fingers below the knee joint. thanks for any advise on that. in the meantime, i will be looking into glute exercises if thats what the doctor orders.
Hi Otto, We are so sorry to hear that you've been struggling with knee pain, especially when hiking and when using the stairs. It must be incredibly frustrating to deal with and we hope you can find some relief soon. Strengthening the glutes can definitely help with knee pain, but it's important to note that strengthening the hamstrings or quads might actually exacerbate your knee pain. We have a video that goes into more detail on this topic. “3 Reasons Why Strengthening Your Hamstring Makes Knee Pain Worse” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kG31BO155BA.html However, we want to stress that you know your body better than anyone so please do what feels right for you. It's great that you'll be discussing these techniques with your doctor so you can make educated decisions on how to proceed with your recovery. We also have a couple of other videos that might be helpful, which we'll link below. “Could My Inner Knee Pain Be Pes Anserine Bursitis? Hey Laura, so sorry to hear you have been dealing with knee bursitis :-( Temporarily, you might have to. What if it’s swelling at the back of the knee? Is this bursitis? During long training runs for a marathon, I developed a lump behind the knee that was painful, and restricted my mobility. Its okay when I don’t exert myself, but when I try to run or am On my feet for a long time it flares up again, and causes the whole knee to feel like it’s seizing up. I would appreciate your opinion, on this matter, Thank you.
Hey FAMLOPEZ, This is a great question! 🙌 You can as long as you are activating the glute muscles. A way to test if you are activating the glutes is when you cycle for a while and you stop and get off your bike. If you notice that your quads are tired then the glutes were not activated. You want to feel tired in the glutes. We do have a video that explains the exercise here: "Can Cycling Actually Help Heal Knee Pain From Chondromalacia Patella" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lzOiVhjFhfg.html The same techniques apply to bursitis even though the video is addressing Chondromalcia Patella. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!😃
Hi Sophia, it can feel really scary but more than anything it's important to advocate for yourself and speak up when things don't sound or feel right. The root cause of bursitis is usually a muscle imbalance stemming from the glutes. We have a playlist for knee bursitis help you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Knee Bursitis and tendonitis help” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mYJjj7Xp8GYNuup56de-NLD We wish you all the best! I randomly get a swelling just below the knee cap, seems unrelated to activity, just starts and can be 2-3 days to peak pain, and can last for a week or two even when resting. it gets so bad i can't bend my knee or if i do, it takes several minutes, and also a long time to get it straight again. I have to pick my leg up to get into bed, it has no power and intense pain. I can stand up on this leg with no problem, so the actual part where the bones meet must be fine, its more like a muscle ligament thing. Been told it might be gouty arthritis. Does that sound likely? I am thinking it might be bursitis after watching your video, esoecially the one beflow the knee. I do have strong quads and I do have a small butt so maybe you are onto something here, very interesting!
My MRI report after meniscus repair shows "Mild fluid collection along medial aspect adjacent to MCL fibers-likely bursitis" What does it mean?please reply🙏
Hey Kakarot, that sounds like you're still dealing with some swelling in the area. If you had your meniscus repair within the past 2 months, then this may be normal. If it's been more than 2 months, then you likely have an underlying muscle imbalance that is putting too much pressure on the inner part of the knee and not allowing that area to heal properly. Fix the muscle imbalance either way to make sure your knee is healthy for the long term!
@@epmanualphysicaltherapy it's been over 10 months And currently i'm facing instability and pain in bearing weight or walking for 10-15 mins..my knee feels heavy and uncomfortable
Can bursitis be painless? I have a swollen bump right in front of the knee cap that feels like a liquid filled sack but it doesn't hurt at all, not even when I press it. I was kneeling a lot recently so I think it is bursitis but what's strange is that it doesn't hurt at all.
Never had bursitis until I had a total knee replacement. So hard to do PT, do my best but makes it worse. Doc told me to find a balance! WTH? Still can't get my ROM back, knee worse now than before surgery! Had bakers cysts all the time and no medial meniscus and bone on bone so they said TKR only way to fix it. Will I ever get my ROM back? What can I do to get knee stronger without irritating the bursitis? Wearing shoes even flare it up! So fed up and at point where I just want them to take leg off from knee up! Tired of pain! So tired!
I hear you! I’m sitting here waiting for my PT to come to my house because I had a partial knee replacement two weeks ago. It’s my second one thankfully I have no more knees. I have bursitis also and I know that if I didn’t, it would be a lot easier to recover from this. The pain is unbelievable. You can’t even describe it and all they keep saying is push harder! I’d like to push them lol!
Can people with a high foot arch also be the cause of some muscle groups being overused and play a role in getting Bursitis of the inner knee area? My son has just started playing rugby, he has high arches, his second practice he fell on his knee while tackling and now has a huge painful bump (not a bruise) on the inner section of the knee below the knee cap, he is only 12 now, will this cause future issues? And how can I have him treated correctly to train the correct muscle groups to help with the high arch and prevent further Bursa injuries?
Do statin drugs (Lipitor, Zocor, etc.) cause swelling of the bursa? Like clockwork, after 6 weeks of taking a relatively high dose of a statin, my knee(s) swell resulting in intense pain.
Ask your doctor to switch you to a low dose water soluble statin. Lipitor and Zocor are fat soluble and cause more muscle problems. Pravachol or Lescol are water based. Crestor is also water based but is the strongest statin and can cause problems. Pravachol at 10mg nightly with lipid profile in 6 weeks. If tolerated the dose can be increased. Take Co-enzyme Q10 400mg daily. This also helps with muscle pain. Hope this helps. Dr.Mike DO
So I get bursitis about twice a year since 2021. I was thinking of going to see my doctor but he doesn't do anything. He says there's nothing wrong with takes a x-ray. And put some tape on it. The first time was the. Caused by kneeling on cement working on my car. This time it was caused by standing in one place for 3 or 4 hours. Sanding and painting my back fence. Don't have any pain.
I had Bursitis on elbow and fluid build up.Had asperation and Doctor drained said fluid from elbow no problems.i tried RICE Method for week's and didn't do a thing.Just did same thing with catching my kneecap.went to Doctor same situation had it Drained of fluid build up good as new.why you not mention this sir.???
This past weekend I experienced a pulsating pain below my knee cap on the right side (outside) of my right leg. The pain was intense I applied my right thumb on the spot and it alleviated the pulsing pain. There is no pain with movement. Sunday it occurred a couple of times that evening. I took ibuprofen Sunday evening with no further pain until Tuesday even while standing I felt a series of pulses then it stopped. Any idea?

Hello :) thank you so much for all of your videos. I’ve learned so much. I’ve been having this very uncomfortable feeling on one of my knees. Almost like it’s misaligned, I don’t have pain just an uncomfortable ( like a pulled muscle on the back of my knee and side of my hip. I can see a dent on the side of my knee cap, it looks like my knee is shrinking and the tendon below it looks smaller than the other knee. When I move the same leg like I’m riding a bike motion the hip area pops. I feel like I’m falling apart. Would love to get your feedback on what you think may be going on.I have major health anxiety and I’m afraid to go see a doc and be told I need surgery. 😢I can walk okay no major pain, but I’m afraid it will get worse. Please help!
Hi kban, it has to do with whether your glutes are stronger than your thighs. When it comes to knee pain and muscle imbalances, the hamstrings and quads tend to be more dominant, like the heavier side of the seesaw. This can put excess pressure on the knee joint, leading to discomfort and potential issues. Our suggestion is to focus on strengthening the glutes and engaging the core muscles, which act as the other side of the seesaw, helping to restore balance and reduce strain on the knee. You can go back to working the hamstrings and quads as soon as you are confident the glutes are stronger. You will know when the pain subsides in your knees but you will need to make sure that the strength in the glutes, hamstrings, and quads are balanced. Of course, we acknowledge that everyone's situation is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. We encourage you to listen to your body and if you don't feel like focusing on the glutes is going to work for you then do what feels best.
