Id be scared to use it around food not because its not safe , but the by products used to make it ended up in 90% on the human bodies on the planet as a 'forever chemical'. If you are one of the customers who might care about this I hope this helps you.

I like to get different views on oils for my knives so thanks for the video. I've been using Lucas Fishing Reel Oil and everything I've heard is that the oil impregnates into the metal and it's been working really well on my knives. I cast 100's to 1000 times when I go fishing so if it's good enough for that kind of usage, it should be good for folders....for me anyway, it's been working great! No gumming up, no build up and folders just keep on working.

@@BOOSTEDLASER I ended up picking up some KPL and it’s ok nothing crazy special although I like the three different thicknesses. I would have to say my favourite lube now is some super lube mixed with either KPL or Nano the thinnest one as the super lube is just a tad thick, so 75% super lube and thin it out with 25 percent nano 5 for me that’s the best. If I had a choice I like nano over KPL as I think the nano doesn’t dry up as fast. It’s not an over night thing, but after 5 months nano will be more liquid. I hope this helps take care knife knerd.

Cool video, I've been trying out similar products as well. Have you tried air tool oil for pivot bearings/washers? I use a tiny dap of superlube on the detent ball and track. Thanks for the video! Very informative, but l think many knife people are interested in one more aspect - safety on foods. What l am looking for is something that will keep my knife relatively (not super) smooth and keep my carbon/d2 blades from corrosion but at the same time make me feel safe to occasionally cut a fruit for my kid. I ended up using food grade mineral oil but the problem is it doesn’t last on the knife. Can you recommend anything?
@TheBigCanucker
@TheBigCanucker 4 года назад
Ataleph Doh! I completely forgot to mention anything to do with food safety that’s my bad. I don’t worry about rust on my blades because I live in such a dry area, but to prevent rust on blades I would suggest either the EDCi spray from Aegis in the video or also another product called Frog Lube both are supposed to be non toxic and the EDCi seems to work for me, but like I said it’s very dry where I live so take that with a grain of salt. When using the frog lube I’ve been told to heat your blade up with a heat gun or hair dryer for best results. I hope this helps and take care.

I've been using Daiwa reel oil lately. Prior I was putting mineral oil in everything, but this reel oil seems better suited to folder pivots. Plus it's only like eight bucks Canadian. No idea as to the food safety, but I figure since you only need to use it sparingly on the pivot/washers inside the knife, it shouldn't be escaping onto the blade.

SO far so good! I did read one Amazon review where someone claimed they looked up the MSDS sheet on it & that it was only thinned mineral oil, but I couldn't find said data sheet myself to confirm. I'll definitely consider the Superlube H3 oil if I have any issues though!

CSGraves So far just the regular Superlube has been working great and even though it doesn’t say specifically that version is food safe as long as it’s just on the pivot in an amount that works and not sloppily applies I still think there is no worries about cutting up an apple or most food applications. And even if a small amount is ingested I don’t think it would hurt.....that much. Lol.

What about Lucas extreme duty gun grease for Teflon washers?
@TheBigCanucker
@TheBigCanucker 3 года назад
Sounds like it would work, but I’m not sure how long it lasts and if it gets gummy when it gets old. If it stays viscous for every it might work, but it also depends on the knife and duty of the knife. If it’s a flipper fidget type or a food knife it might be better to use something else, but if it’s one of those never maintain beaters it seems like the Lucas would last a long time. I hope this helps. Take care.
@shepleonard8695
@shepleonard8695 3 года назад
@@TheBigCanucker All oils get gunky and gummy and gritty that's the reason why you don't lube a knife at all. The knife have been running dry for the longest is a Tbree Sisters Forge Beast. I've been running the beast draw for over 5 years now and it is absolutely positively the smoothest knife I own followed by my Small Sebenza 21 ( That runs dry as well). Yeah gun lube is snake oil. Well I shouldn't say a snake oil but it only makes a difference while you're playing with it as soon as you've done it the moment it goes in your pocket it diminishes immediately. If let's face it lubrication AKA oils and grease are designed to combat friction opening and closing a knife doesn't generate any measurable amount of heat AKA friction that warrants lubrication. If you are putting lubrication in a clean knife and since it's lubrication you automatically think oh wow it's smoother no different than the doctor giving a hypochondriac sugar pill. On all of my bearing knives to include flippers there is absolutely 0 lubrication and they're actually smoother than they were before I started running knobs dry.

@shepleonard8695
@shepleonard8695 3 года назад
@@TheBigCanucker I don't think it really matters but if you do the test what you do is you completely claim the knife whether it's a bronze phosphor washer knife or a bearing's knife. You clean the knife completely reassemble it put the same amount of torque on each knife the other knife you do the same thing you clean it and then you loop it up carry each knife for 90 days are more and then actually see the difference in the knives. 90% of everyone out there does not disassemble their knives to clean or lose them. I know guys with $1200 custom knobs that have no mechanical understanding or ability whatsoever and they've had these knives for years and have never cleaned them. I mean if we're honest with each other I've got knives slip joints that are over a 100 years old and they opened in clothes and functioned absolutely perfectly and these knobs have never been disassembled. They were lubricated because they had to be because of the blade steel they were made out of most are all high carbon steell blades. But the point I'm making is this whole obsession with people taking their knobs apart cleaning them lubricating them and then reassembling the knife only to have to do it in 30 days or less all over again just doesn't happen with the vast majority of knife owners. And believe me I used to be that guy until I realised it's all marketing. Around 2003 - 2005 or so is when I started noticing all of the new "super" gun lube coming out. And then just after that you started seeing all of this "miracle" knife lube coming out. Prior to that very few people could care less about what lube or if any lube They used on their knife. Yeah I was forced to know enough to see Alexa at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte at their automotive section where they were talking about lubrication and friction.. Most mechanical devices of course mostly the engine were discussed but the knife topic did get brought up in what the experts to include the professors they are talked about were the fact that there's no measurable amount of heat generated from a knife opening that would warrant lubrication. Bad tied in with the fact that the knife is going to be opened used and then closed so it's not a repetitive emotion at high rpm. They said basically that's what the bearings and/or washers are for, To provide a Ease of opening with less friction without the use of a lubricant. It was also talked about how different lubricants are going to break down due to environmental exposures and just overall exposure to air and debris, And how this breakdown and/or contamination causes even more damage had there not been any at all.

As far as I know it’s just called super lube.
