I pretty much use the exact same stuff, I have the work sharp smaller sharpener like you have in this video and the desktop model as well. That's an excellent idea for the Smiths diamond sharpener, put a small strop on the outside.
Very well put together. The goof off is a great idea and is on my list. I generally use Rem oil for the knives I regularly use, but for those I put away for a while I wipe on a coat of Birchwood Casey Barricade.
I've got the worksharp hand sharpener. Then I have the spyderco 1by 4 inch ceramic with the leather pouch. Which works great for a strop as well as the work sharp. So I put BR black and green on the spyderco leather pouch. All in all it it doesn't take up much room, and will be good enough for my needs while I'm out.
Nice Vid!! I knew you used the Yellow Stone but I'm glad to finally know what the other compunds are without going through many videos to see if you mentioned it before. Also the "Not Your" Shed looks great! Much less of an eye sore.
Thanks Chris for showing different ways to sharpening knife's I have a problem sharpening my mother's kitchen knife it's stainless steel and very hard to sharpen? and that one knife is hers favorite so I'll try it again
That was an awesome video.A much needed wealth of information. I think goof off is a must if your near fatwood. I'll be looking back at this video a few times. Thanks. Tony.
In the field blade maintenace and I have to carry it? Fällkniven DC4, small simple DIY wood leather two sided strop, small piece of cloth soaked in food grade camelia oil in a ziplock bag and the diamond file on my Leatherman Wave for coarser stuff like nicks on axes and such. KISS, you don't need much more IMO...
I know you did this in part before during Summer of Jessica but would like to see a follow-up vid to this on the worksharp with you giving advice/and demo of usage with one of your blades.
Never thought about running the workshop in hand across the blade versus running the knife on the tool. Duh! Thanks for the tip Chris that looks much easier!
the dmt diamond stone (green) is a 1,200 grit stone they even make one finer than that one the tan stone like 4,000 grit or maybe higher did you ever see the mini stones by dmt (blue ,red ,green) very compact for the pack and easy edge sharpening strop with the tan stone and good to go
Great video Chris! I agree with everything you've presented and I learned a little as well. I'm going to give Herb's Yellowstone a try! You probably know all this already, if so just ignore my post. But I wanted to share a product I was introduced to a couple of years ago (I do leather work for a living. I'm using VERY sharp knives every day). It's Brownell's 555 black rouge. It removes just enough steel in the stropping process to effectively re-sharpen a knife (as coarse rouges do), but the difference with this is that it polishes the blade to a high gloss at the same time. You might want to check it out. Then finish with the green rouge just like you're doing. The other thing I use in my shop and in the field (I'm ex-Special Forces) is Renaissance wax. Check that out too. It's fantastic for protecting carbon steel, leather, wood, etc, when you put your knives away. Bobby
Great vid about sharpening supplies Chris....thinking of using Ariat mink oil on the leather sheath that came with my Cold Steel Trailmaster (80's vintage) --good idea? ...
You made it clear that you don't use Rem oil on your food knife. Any suggestions on what we can use on a camp/food prep knife that still protects the steel?
Very awsome maintenance kit Chris. I have an off topic question for you, it's about a sheath. if you have a sheath that wasn't made for a particular knife, and it's a little big, tadd bit loose in it. is that a deal breaker? just wondering what your 2 cents on that are
TBOR101 it's a tad or just a smidge more. if you hold it upside down and give it a shake it will fall out. I really like the sheath and the knife. the sheath has about everything I've wanted in one for a long time lol. It has a slight wobble and like I said, a firm shake will drop it. can you wet form a sheath that has been dyed? it's black and I'm sure it wasn't from a black Angus haha
First off, thanks for this timely video. I am slowly getting comfortable sharpening my knives. What do you use the regular WD 40 for and do you use the Worksharp Field Sharpener's metal sharpening plates at all? You did not mention you using them. Thanks...Abe Azar
Is goof off just lighter fluid that goes in zippos? Cause lighter fluid gets the sticky stuff off when you peel stickers off abd it leaves the residue. if goof off is cheaper I'll use that as my zippo fluid
I would love to know more about what kind of compound and where to buy them.. I'm making my own strops but confused on the colors of the compound and brand name..
SmokinApe--I really appreciate it buddy. I own some nice knives but have always been scared shitless for some reason thinking of sharpening them--I simply can't continue this thought process. I must bite the bullet and get the show on the road. Dude, I think you should put out a video on knife sharpening as well. I love your channel and I'm heading over there right now to watch your last video on that sweet headlamp from Olight. Again, thanks man and I just might reach out to you--appreciate all you do buddy. - Shane
how do u know what colour compound to use on your strops. mime came with white and green when I bought it but I'm not really sure which one is which and what order I'm meant to use them in.
i.kaslar the grit varies Depending On The maker of the compounding. Generally, green is 6000 grit and white is 12000 grit. I use the green pretty much on all my Outdoor Knives, kitchen knives get white. Great Question!!!
I've heard you mention the what-if ninjas several times before. if there were no what ifs there would be no reason for prepping or preparedness or your Channel.
Thanks @preparedmind101 I've been looking for a good strop for awhile i like the idea of a large hanging strop for larger knives. Got a "tsprof k02" sharpener that does an incredible job but the stones stop at around 2000 grit and a good strop would make a world of difference.
What? People actually buy Knives to USE!? Oh, you're talking about FIXED Blades! For a second, I was thinking about Folders actually cutting something! Actually, I think rotating a couple of Folders isn't bad, but when I see an $800 Folder being Touted as an EDC Knife by some channels, then two days later a $600 Folder is the NEW EDC knife, followed by another one the Next Day, you get the idea. Good Info, as always.
Some people really don't like sharpening and some people love it. But why would anyone preach at or get angry at someone who doesn't or just doesn't have time? I love hand sharpening, it's a good part of the knife owner/user experience for me- it's what I'm doing right now actually. But I don't understand why I should get angry or annoyed at someone who uses a machine. You better like what I like or else? Anyway thanks for the goof off tip, I'm going to get some and hope it works on pine sap.
before I learned how to sharpen my knives, I would buy a $200 knife, use it until it was dull, then I would go buy another knife!!! glad I learned to sharpen and strop!!
You have the Kim Kardashian maintenance kit here. Literally everything here can be replaced with 1 decent cleaner, daiwa reel oil, and a diamond hone set and a strop.
@preparedmind101, or anyone with ideas. Im trying to make a mini altoids kit for knife maintenance that will fit my leather knife sheath. Any creative ideas would be greatly appreciated
