On a lower level but along the same line... when I was an undergraduate I had a part-time job with the college and had to call college deans and my name was Dean. So I would place the call and say to the secretary "this is Dean Jones and I'd like to talk to Dean Smith" and I would get through immediately.

@@TheBadassTonberry That's not true actually. The opposite. Just look up the Wikipedia article of random professors. It'll list their full name, and then mention that they are a professor. For example: Sucharit Bhakdi (thailändisch สุจริต ภักดี [sut̚˨˩.t͡ɕa˨˩.rit̚˨˩ pʰak̚˦˥.diː˧]; * 1. November 1946 in Washington, D.C.) ist ein deutscher Facharzt für Mikrobiologie und Infektionsepidemiologie. Er ist emeritierter Professor der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz And someone you are meeting outside of a formal context would considered extremely arrogant for insisting on being called their title. Like if you are doing some random hobby, or meat someone having drinks or whatever. They'd never insist on their titles being used unless they are a pompous arsehole.

Congratulations to Professor Poliakoff and his worthy supporters in receiving such a great honor and joining such a high rank. As a teacher from across the pond, I find the historic A - Z list of recipients for Knighthood a very diverse and most admirable group. I was gladdened to find the the name of Abdu’l-Baha, a Central Figure of the Baha'i Faith, at the very top of the list. During World War I when a blockade threatened the lives of many civilians in Haifa, Abdu’l-Baha saved them from starvation. He personally organized extensive agricultural operations near Tiberias, stored wheat underground and distributed it to the inhabitants. At war’s end, in recognition of His painstaking accomplishments, He was knighted Sir Abdu’l-Baha ‘Abbas, K.B.E on 27 April 1920 at the British Governor's residence in Haifa at a ceremony held in His honor.

Those who have a passion for their area of science and take the time to share their knowledge and get others excited about science are the true heroes of our society. Instead, we celebrate athletes and celebrities. I became interested in electronics when I was 9 years old. (I'm 49 now.) If it wasn't for adults, who were much more knowledgeable than I was, taking time out of their lives to foster and sustain my interest, I wouldn't be were I am today. I am an electronics engineer and have had an incredibly rewarding career. The most exciting part of my life has been being able to help younger people get interested in science. No matter which area of science you pursue, you will be exposed to other areas. Ten years ago, I became employed at a chemical company. I had forgotten most of the chemistry from my early education, but because of videos like these, I'm able to perform my job with greater understanding, efficiency and, most of all, safety for myself and others. Every year, our life expectancy increases because of science. The iPad I am typing this on wouldn't be possible without science. Unfortunately, here in the U.S., people are more interested in what the Kardashians are doing, instead of what the latest advancements in science are. For those of us who's career is based in science, it's our responsibility to ignite the passion for science in our younger generation. Societies advance because of science.... not because your favorite sports team won a title. I dream of a world where scientists get the 50 million dollar contracts instead of athletes. Sir Martyn Poliakoff, I bow to you, in reverence, for your accomplishments and for your passion to share your knowledge and passion for science. P.S. You rock that hair like no one else could!!! :-)

According to the official website of the British monarchy: "...he would be expected to have the financial ability to support the honour of knighthood, so that he could provide himself with arms, armour, horses and the required number of armed followers to render military service to his Sovereign for a minimum period each year." I think, as a first step, you should upgrade the two chains to full-on chainmail. :)

I just recently started watching Periodic Videos, so I have a lot of catching up to do. I very much enjoy watching Professor Poliakoff's videos and want to congratulate him on receiving Knighthood! Even though I am not a scientist, I have to say that Professor Poliakoff is the kind of educator that I would have loved to have as a teacher when I was younger. He is very inspiring, down to earth and knowledgeable. I can watch these videos for hours on end. Fascinating topics and very educational. Congratulations again, Sir Martyn!

Though Norway is a monarchy, we don't have a nobility apart from the royal family. The bestowing of titles, knighthoods and similar, is not a "regular thing" here, so it has no value, (no social protocols). However, the British system, as practiced now, is great for recognising achievement, in a cheap but meaningful way. Having someone who calls themselves "sir", or being presented as "sir", will be noticed. Too bad the professor isn't working on something extraordinary, so he could receive a Nobel's Price (the ultimate honour a scientist can receive)

Well deserved to one of the humblest educators of the internet. You reach many people all over the globe - I watch you frequently all the way from the tip of Africa. From an ordinary Martins, to an extraordinary and inspiring fell of science; a professor who was smart enough to heed advice from your young son. We salute you, ....cheers Sir Martyn!!!!
