Hi Ruth, this was a struggle, but very fun. I've got a heel 🥳 it's definitely not prettynor correct, I now have 34 stitches in front (how did I do that?) and 31 in the back. It'll be fine, I need 64 in total so 1 decrease and I'm back on track. Hopefully the next sock will be prettier. I'm tempted to rip back to my lifeline just before the heel, but the stitches are hard to pick up. Maybe I just should be satisfied with my flaws 😅

I have held off making socks because of the way the heels are made, I'm going to try making socks with this method. Now I can make socks that fit perfectly. Unless I buy children's socks, ladies are too big for my feet. Thank you so much for this method.

Thanks for the step by step instruction for the heel, it is very helpful. Do we need to add gusset? If so, how could l do it?
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 3 года назад
Hi Ken, i'm glad it's helpful! A short row heel does not usually include a gusset. If you have a very deep instep, you could increase 1 stitch at the beginning and edge of the sole stitches, every other row, maybe 4-6 times before where you'd start your heel. After you turn your heel, just decrease them away as you increased them - 2 per row until the count is back to normal. Does that make sense? I can do toe up socks with a gusset too if you think something like that would be interesting.

@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 3 года назад
Hi Gloria, I'm so glad to hear this is helpful for you. For the 8 year old it depends how big their feet are. My (almost) 8 year old comfortably wears the women's small size, and he wears a kid's size 2. You can find the numbers for cast on in part 1 of the video or in the blog post (both linked above in the description box). I hope this helps!

@@gloriavella3025 Yep! You can absolutely change into ribbing for the leg. You could even rib across the top of the sock and knit plain (as in the video) for the sole of the sock for a stretchier fit.

Thank you for a very nice and clear and informative video. Does this work the same way if you are using 2 circular needles? I would like to try that. Also, do you make them 2 at a time. I really love that method.
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 2 года назад
You’re welcome, I’m glad it was helpful. Yes, this method will work with two circular needles, you just use one needle for the front (instep) stitches and one for the back (sole) stitches. I do sometimes knit them two at a time, but I’m much slower with that method so I don’t use it as frequently. I do, however, love that you end up with two completed socks when using that method!
@Pluviophile218
@Pluviophile218 2 года назад
@@OrchardHouseEditing I love it as well.I've been trying to master this method for about 4 years so I don't have to refer to my book. The tricky part is turning the heel so you're not all twisted up. Is that the same on toe-up? Or is it a little easier?
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 2 года назад
@@Pluviophile218 I think it depends which heel you use. If you use a short row heel (like in this video) the heel is all done on the back needle and is done all at once, so you just do one heel and then the other. I’ve also had good success using a Fleegle heel going toe up two at a time

I have a question about the sock pattern as far as so many inches before your heel now is that two-and-a-half in before your heel of your foot actually would start or two-and-a-half in prior to the heel start
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 11 месяцев назад
So you measure your entire foot length, then knit the sock to 2.5” less than your foot length before beginning the heel. So if your foot is 9.5” long, you’d knit to 7” before working the heel. Does that help?
@shielasmith9583
@shielasmith9583 11 месяцев назад
Yes I absolutely helps thank you so much I have another question since you responded so quickly in regards to doing a knee-high sock with this pattern do I need to do any increases I do not have wide legs in fact they're actually pretty skinny because I am wheelchair-bound thus I just wanted to have some knee-highs is this something that is applicable with the same amount of stitches that I've already done or can I had some stitches and then do a decrease before the cuff
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 11 месяцев назад
@@shielasmith9583 so it’s going to depend on the size different from your calves to ankles. If it’s not too much of a difference you might be able to get away with minimal-to-no increasing. If you have like..2” or more difference, you can try them on as you go and do some increases centered on the back of the leg (the center of the heel) and then decrease a bit before the top cuff. Ribbing is also your friend with knee socks- make sure you have a nice tall cuff to help hold them up!

And size 8 half
@csmith722
@csmith722 2 года назад
@@kathysanbornsanborn710 Shoe size isn't the way. Measure around your instep in inches and look at the swatch you knit to see how many stitches per inch you created with that yarn and those needles. My instep is 8 1/2" inches and my swatch was 6 stitches per inch. Multiply 6 times 8.5 = 53. I subtracted 3 stitches because I want the sock to fit snugly, so I cast on 48 if I'm starting at the top of the sock. If I'm starting at the toe, I increase until I get to 48.
@CeeJayKay
@CeeJayKay 5 месяцев назад
Is this suppose to increase or decrease stitches? 😕
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 5 месяцев назад
Neither. You’re working one stitch less each row until you have about 1/3 of the stitches remaining unwrapped in the center, then you work one more stitch per row until you’re back to the starting point.
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 5 месяцев назад
So it’s not an increase or a decrease, but rather creating a pocket for your heel.

I am having trouble with the heel part. The wrapping is confusing to me. You don’t wrap on the first row but only at the end. Is that right? I would like to see you do each row of the heel. That might help me as a beginner. I also have trouble seeing the bars you talk about and the wrapped stitches when you come back to them. Maybe I should just knit a tube sock with no heel😂
