Amazing video! Thank you so much! Im trying out my first toe up socks using your videos as tutorials. So easy to understand and I can clearly see what and how you do it. Appriciate it! I Have only done cuff up before. but I don't really enjoy it, so I thought I would try toe up sick, using magic loop and see if that makes it more fun.

Thank you so much for this - I love to hear that my tutorials help. I definitely prefer toe up socks - I find that you can put large, fun patterns on the instep without worrying about foot length or running out of yarn.

@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing Год назад
Congratulations on your first socks! I'm glad you enjoyed them. I don't block my socks because wearing them will form them to your feet. It's not like a garment where you'll have too-short sleeves without blocking. If you decide to block then yes, you would need sock blockers.

very clear instruction but can you do the same on 4 or 5 needles??
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 7 месяцев назад
You certainly can! Just split the stitches evenly in quarters. Needles 1 and 2 will be the instep, needles 3 and 4 will be the sole/back of leg/heel.

Hi Ruth, I totally agree with 'the Craftaholic,' it sounds very doable. I have failed three times before but I feel optimistic. How do I translate this to a fingerling yarn and for an adult? Do you have a tutorial or pattern for an adult (women shoe size 7). Thank you!
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 2 года назад
Hi Ella, I totally know the feeling. It took me multiple tries before I “got it” with sock knitting. If you’d like the pattern totally written out, it’s on my website- there’s a direct link to it in the description of this video. I’m here for you if you need help!
@CLIPPERTWO2010

Hi first off thanks for a great tutorial. Second I'm a bit confused as to which needle you pull for your working needle. In the beginning you pull the needle closest to you (front) but then later on in the video you appear to be pulling it from the back.
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing Год назад
Hiya! I appreciate the question. You should always be pulling the back needle. I can see how in the first section (right after the cast on) it would look like the front needle, depending on the angle. I think it might just have been the angle of how I was holding the needles. Does that make sense?
@sandi5276
@sandi5276 Год назад
Hi Ruth - I am an intermediate beginner, and I am trying to learn Judy's Magic Cast on. WHen you are doing the cast on, are you alternating with the yarn tail and the working yarn, or just the working yarn? thanks sincerely for your response.
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing Год назад
Hi Sandi, yep - I'm alternating with the working yarn and the tail. They're essentially going over the needle and then twisting around each other. Check out the article in Knitty where it debuted: knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html
@prestondemeritt6830
@prestondemeritt6830 3 года назад
QUESTION: at 11:45 you stated you were going to continue alternating an increase row and non-increase row until you reached the number you needed (48). Doesnt this mean one side would be wider than the other? at 12:45 I counted 24sts on on side. Meaning the other side has 24sts too but if you only increased on one side, that doesnt make sense?? Please explain (making some for my 4yo too!) TY
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 3 года назад
Aha! Good question. So a row is one trip all the way around the needles you could also say that you work the front and back and that makes up one row. So both sides are the same. The non increase row means you knit every stitch on both needles without increasing. Does that help? If you need it fully written out it’s on my blog, which is linked in the description box.

I can’t see which needle “is closer to you”.
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 2 года назад
In the beginning of the video when I’m doing the cast on? If so, I’m both points of a circular needle in my right hand. The needle closer to you is the one physically closer to your body.
@nancylebrun9953
@nancylebrun9953 3 года назад
I am new using circular needles, i knitted socks but never toe up, when do you actually start knitting in circle?
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 3 года назад
Right at the beginning. The cast on I show in this video is joined together, so every time you turn you’re going in a circle and working in the round.

@maggiezorn4591
@maggiezorn4591 3 года назад
Is there a way to make these with 4 weight yarn?
@OrchardHouseEditing
@OrchardHouseEditing 3 года назад
That's a good question. Yes, there is, but you need to be able to know your gauge and therefore stop increasing the toe at the correct point. For a women's medium (like US Womens 7-8) I would start with trying the 48 st size and see how you want to adjust from there.

@OrchardHouseEditing

For the toe? For a baby you probably wouldn’t notice, but for an adult size you’ll have a shorter toe section that probably gets wide a little too fast. Try it on!
