Hello friends! You may or may not have noticed that my personal style is greatly influenced by historical and vintage fashion. I am very much inspired by Victorian and Edwardian Fashions, so let's dive into the Second Book of Hows out of 1902 once more!
In this video we will knit a 1902 Lady's Spencer out of my own Spindle spun yarn that I Spun during the #100daysofspindlespinningchallenge. During that 100 days of spindle spinning challenge I managed to spin 31 mini skeins of yarn out of my Flemish Sheep and Belgian Milksheep fiber. Will this be enough for this historic sweater (or well, cardigan) knitting attempt? Let's find out!
All of my yarn is also naturally or botanically dyed. The endresult might not entirely fit me as the Edwardians or Victorians have intended, but I am really happy with and proud of my new cosy little handknit cardigan. It only took me like half a year to make it.

Your spindle-spun sweater is gorgeous!. I can't imagine having the patience to spin enough on a stick to knit a sweater. My one and only spindle-spun object is a headband / ear-covering sort of thing I made about 30 years ago. I was visiting a rural area of Scotland and collected bits of fleece from bushes and fences. Instead of waiting to take it home to spin on my wheel, I bought a pencil and a potato in the local shop and spun the fleece into yarn on my make-it-work spindle. When I got home, I knitted the band, and I still wear it every winter.

I’m terribly impressed with your cardigan, and your determination to spindle spin all the yarn for it! The time and patience involved is amazing. I think it looks wonderful, and you have every right to be so proud of it and how it turned out! You’re very talented!

Do you think Dries would build Jente a Viking ship to go with it? Some years ago I was going past the pet food aisle in the supermarket and there was a little boy saying in an off-hand tone to his mother, "Hey, Mum, let's get some cat food!" His mother replied, "No, we don't have a cat." It was so obvious that the little fellow wanted a cat and he was trying to be subtle about it but not really succeeding.

I love how your spencer turned out. It does look like a modern cardigan. If you have unruly curling edges you can do a crochet edge around them to help them behave. My first sweater was a nice spindle spun adventure. It turned out lumpy and bumpy and uneven , ill fitting bundle of squish that I love and wear.

Hi Jente, I hope you're OK xx❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast. I love all of your Supported Spindles Handspun Yarns and the fact that you gave each one a name. That is a great idea. One that I don't think anyone has done before, unless they intend to sell it.✨️🔆🌟 Your 1902 Lady's Spencer, looks amazing and very beautiful. Made from your 100 Days of Spindle Spun Yarns. I've not made any Garments from my Spindling Handspun Yarns, Maybe sometime in the future I will, especially with my Supported Spindle. I have used some of my Handspun Yarn made on one of my eSpinners to make the Eyelet Border on a Shawl, the main bidy was made with commercial yarn from my stash, and my Handspun compliments perfectly. I am starting to have a collection of Handspun Yarns, without any particular intention for them. Thankyou so much for sharing your expertise and for the inspiration, both are very, very much appreciated. ✨️🌟🔆💐🌷 Happy Spinning and Knitting Fibre Friend 🎡🧶🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Huge Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🐑🐑

Love it, love everything about it, you did a great job on that 1902 cardigan. I first learn how to spin on a handmade spindle I made, and while I did pretty good, I just didnt have the patients to spin enough yarn to weave anything with it, since I am a weaver. But I did build a quill spinner, and that really improve my spinning, and have spun over 8 oz of mohair, but again I never did anything with it, and its been lost to time, but I have been thinking about weaving enough fabric using pre-spun yarn to make a gentlemen's jacket or some type of upper clothing, I have been thinking maybe a Japanese style out jacket or coat called sakiori, where they make fabric from old clothing and weave them into a rug like fabric and make outerwear with it, similar to weaving rag rugs. I think you should do something like that, weave enough fabric and make a woven cardigan in that 1902 pattern, that will make a good episode.
@MijnWolden

I really want to do more weaving indeed!

love love love your colours and the stripes are splendiferous. personally, the button band has an off centre feel and that would drive me nuts (it was ok in the 80's for our clothes to be all skew and skwiff) but now that I am old I find that I am more ... um .. no I am less ... eeerrrrrr ... sjoe this is difficult ... look I am still a chaotic, wild, free, eclectic, rebelious, Frida Kahlo-esque bohemian. And happily mix spots, stripes, circles and flowers all in one outfit, and proudly wore orange and red when my hair was red and I don't care if my hair bun leans to one side ... but, I just like my buttons and zips to be perfectly centred. But to you I say BRAVA, job well done !! its lovely !

I have only made scarves and shawls with my spindle spun yarn. I exclusively spindle spun for like 7 years and was waayyyy into lace knitting so it was a match made in heaven....Although I was also too scared to knit sweaters with commercial yarn even heh. One of my current projects is spindling up some yarn for socks. size of sock depends on when Ive had enough but my platonic ideal is stockings for the winter.

So glad to see someone else dancing in joy like me. I bought 12,yes, twelve, alpaca fleeces straight from farm.y spindles are a dowel with wooden wheel as whorl. Can hold so much more than Turkish spindle and spent on fleece . I don't follow trends either. So I have a Miss Grace shawl of many natural colors and 2 tshirts,just finished Turtledove cardigan with similar trepidations. Knit top down,flat,has sorta dolman sleeves getting narrow at 3/4 length... mutton? As i have broad shoulders and hate. Strangler sweater that seemed great. Sooo great.Few where I live understand significance of made from dirty fleece.you made me happy. Also used to make my buttons from fimo clay which also not understood.

I've knit myself a spindle-spun headband! It's bright green, thick and thin yarn, totally covered in cables ("Heartband" on Ravelry, I think?). I can't comment on gage because I'm not really a knitter, but I feel like all the ruffling and padding at the front at the time might have filled up some of that space nicely. Either way, it is a very cute sweater. It gives relaxing and cheerful vibes. I have yet to actually pick up a spindle, unfortunately.... One day.
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Месяц назад
I think it's a case of both. I feel like the ribbing should be sitting a bit higher on the waist, so gauge is lengthwise a bit off, but indeed with the rounded padding and all the floof, most of the width would get fillled in.

I love your willingness (probably comes from being a chaos goblin) to have a go! It certainly paid off this time, the finished result is lovely. So all the stitches fitted on the straight needles? I thought you might have changed over to have room for the extra stitches. The sleeves were probably a little shorter than you wanted because the original was intended as an undergarment. I think it's very likely that people would have knitted the original in stripes or multi-colours, if that was what they happened to have spare. By the time you get to the Great Depression there are a lot of examples of garments and also things like blankets made out of scraps and part of the crafter's art was getting the colours to work together to make a pleasing whole.
