Hello friends! It's July, so that means only one thing: it is Tour de Fleece! We shall be spinning wool for the next 23 days straight, or at least on the days that the cyclists in the Tour de France are cycling. In this video I vlog stages 19, 20, 21 and 22 of the Tour de Fleece where I spin the Zwartbles fleece we have skirted, washed and combed last week. For all this spinning we shall rely on Jillian, my compact spinningwheel, a Louët S71.
I have asked you guys some questions to have interesting topics to talk about these 23 days. In today's video we shall mainly talk about my fatherland: Belgium. Culture, foods and famous people. Also: what we celebrate on our national holiday.
Speaking about travels, you can check out our history hikes on @TheHistoryHikers
and over the coming weeks you can check out drone footage of the castles in this video on ‪@OrcaFPV‬

Do you have a peculiar fiber arts story about your country/culture?
@alexvanderpol1
@alexvanderpol1 Год назад
I am not very up on the history of Dutch fiber arts to be honest. But I do know that we have had (and still have) some very good spinning wheel makers here. Louët is based in the Netherlands and of course your Wernekinck is also from here. Other than that, I would have to Google it myself too 😂
@MijnWolden

And woolmakers too! (But of course that's actually Louët in disguise)

Not peculiar but... In Friesland we have the oldest and working planetarium of the world. It was build, in his own living room in Franeker, by Eise Eisinga. Like many children Eise had to work for his father: Jelte Eisinga had a wool combing business. Eise was interested in Astronomie and Math. He was so eager to learn that when he was young he would weekly walk from Dronrijp to Franeker (7 to 8 km's) to study the math books of Euclides. He did this together with Willem Wijtses a wool dyer. When he was older took over his father's wool combing business and he expanded the company. He had 400 people working for him, his business was thriving. He married and went to live in Franeker. That's where he build the Planetarium in his living room (with help of his father and brother), so he could be able to see what was happening in the sky at any moment. I highly recommend a visit to the Planetarium! 🌌

More sad than peculiar. Despite still being home to 64 million sheep, Australia only has one commercial mill that processes from sheep's back to finished wares. It is also the oldest mill in the country, Waverly Woollen Mills in Tasmania. So much for the country that said to have 'rode on the sheep's back.'
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Год назад
@@jirup even Belgium has more Mills then?! Only one real commercial one though.

One unique thing about Scotland - our national animal is the unicorn. Can't beat taking a mythical non-existent creature as your national representative.😄

My father is half German, half Belgian (Flemish). My mother is Dutch. That means a whole lot of fibre history to investigate. If I add the fact that I was born in Switserland and lived there for a long time, that makes the list even longer. I’ve already learned a lot about the Flemish textile history thanks to having friends from abroad over frequently and needing to brush up on it in order to act as a guide to them. For Switserland, I learned about Sankt Gallen and their lace and embroidery history. I’ve delved in the rabbit hole of the construction and many styles of a Dirndl both through my German heritage and my years in Switserland. Specifically Dutch aspects of textile arts and fashion history… that’s where I’ve got work to do.

As a child, I read every Suske & Wiske strip I could get my hands on! We had a whole shelf of them at home, including some quite old ones that we got second hand (although we never had one of the original red-blue uncoloured ones). As for an interesting tidbit about the Netherlands: did you know the country has more cities than just Amsterdam?! And that we don't actually wear clogs (save for a few people who do so unironically)? And that our country is indeed very, very flat? (I never thought about that until I went to Italy in high school, and saw actual mountains for the first time.) And that we also customarily get rain on our national holiday? And that there are a few sheepherds which are kept in a traditional way in the central/eastern part of the country? At night they are kept in a sheepfold, and during the day the shepherd takes them out onto the moors or fields. I know of one herd that is also shorn with blade shears, and their wool is then spun or otherwise processed by a group of volunteers, who sell these things to help with the upkeep of the sheep. The breed is Veluws Heideschaap (Moorsheep of the Veluwe, a heritage breed), and their wool was the first I ever spun.
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Год назад
But then your national holiday is in april, that's asking for rain 😅 the Lack of mountains is also felt in Belgium... The shepherds sound really cool!
@raevynwoods9403
@raevynwoods9403 Год назад

I live in central Virginia near the city of Charlottesville, known for the University of Virginia and for Thomas Jefferson (not for white supremacists, global friends. Most were interlopers who came into our fine and gentle city). Lots of history in my area involve the men and women responsible for our revolution and independence from England. Naturally, colonial history includes fiber arts so that’s how I became interested in spinning - at an historical demonstration. I have also done some demonstrating myself. My husband grew up on Tin Tin. We have all the books from the 70’s and were excited for the animated series in the 90’s. (Have all the CD’s, too)
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Год назад
I find it interesting that your part of the world remembers the fiber arts more than mine. While, yes, we have the Lakenhallen and some textile history museums, but the living history one in my neighbourhood doesn't have a spinning demonstration... (I don't have the time for it, because I would gladly help them out otherwise)

@@MijnWolden about fiber art. Had to ask my mam. Here we used to crochet curtens. "Valletjes" The type of curtens that are no more then 35cm long and window wide. You would see them or in the top part of the window or the bottom. My mam made some very fine 'valletjes' with cotton... She showed me when i told here that i had made my first curten... The ones she made had me a little jealous, becouse of it's finenes. 😅 My reaction was 'oh, but that is not Crochet?! Wow! Pretty..' 😅 but it was crochet! And i loved it. Now i practice finer crochet. So challenge accepted! Have a good day/week, at working, filming and editing..
