I was so happy to see that you posted a project tutorial. I love your technique posts, but the projects are my favorite. Thank you for showing the brioche knit and purl for throwers. I tried to watch a continental youtuber show the brioche stitch and could not get it to save my life. I can not thank you enough, I am so excited to cast on this project.
Sorry if you're missing them, but I post new tutorials all the time! It takes me a while to prepare them, so I post a new video every week, and a new tutorial about once a month. If you feel like you aren't seeing everything, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications...that way you'll be notified of all my new videos, including giveaways.
Love the new background. I've been following you for years, and you are my favorite knitting tutorials channel ever. I'm knitting since I was 7 years old and you are my go to person if I need a reminder of something. Love love love. Xoxo. Greg.
I started knitting only 3 years ago (needed a hobby) and this is going to be my first jumper. Thank you for another great video with simple instructions and detailed techniques. Invaluable for a novice knitter.
I’m about to start this sweater. Your instruction was perfect as it is a different style of top down start to what I am used to. I just love watching your tutorials. You have an amazing way of explaining everything. Rita.
Lovely tutorial. I really like using the cable cast-on for increasing in this pattern, as I think it creates a more stable cast-on. Thanks as always for my moment of 'Knitting Zen.'
Oooh lovely new yarns! It is so good to see that this channel has grown and is still going strong. I started watching a good 10+ years ago when you helped me learn to knit for the first time in my life! My WiP is a shawl for my mother and I am so grateful for all your advice and guidance. Have a great day. :)
After watching this video I went and bought the yarn and now I am well on my way....I was having problems with the M1R and M1L...I don't know why it has been a challenge for me..but after watching the video with my knitting at hand I believe I finally have it down. I watched your video on the M1R and L over and over again, thanks. I don't know why it has been difficult for me to grasp, but any way I am happily knitting the Wonderful Woolly Sweater.
I have been wanting to knit a jumper and this can be it. ❤️ I have knitted the easy fingerless gloves and the double cuff hat and want to progress to jumpers and socks. Thank you for teaching us this pattern.
I’ve been thinking of knitting my first sweater for a while but very afraid of missing it out, now I can’t wait to start. I love watching you talking and knitting, thank you
Thank you so much! I have been knitting for years and have been so intimidated by top down raglan sweaters! I have made numerous sweaters in pieces and sewn them together... that said I am SO excited to try my FIRST top down sweater (which is so “in” right now, haha
Staci - in my world, you are the Queen of Everything Yarn. So I have a question about yarn. I just spent an hour cutting the yarn “pills” off of a hand kit sweater. Why do some yarns pill? Can it be prevented? What’s the best way to remove them? Nothing makes a sweater look old and fatigued like those darn pills! Perhaps you could share your wisdom on keeping knits beautiful after knitting? Moths got into my cedar lined closet and ate some cashmere sweaters. I didn’t know that cedar paneling had to be sanded once a year to keep repelling moths. Who knew? Thank you for your dedication to all us knitters. I know I wouldn’t have made it through COVID without Very Pink🤗
Been following you for years now. 😘 If you do a search on RU-vid “knit with wool” etc. virtually nothing comes up except everything else. Lol Would you please make a video dedicated to using wool yarns as a science and not just a patter. One of the reasons your so good (other than being charming and knowing your craft) is because you always give some science to what your doing. As always thank you and will keep watching for ever. 😊
I cast this sweater on last week! Shame I’m a week early. So far so good though I didn’t think to try it on before sleeve separation. Will definitely follow this video for the next one I make. X
Love watching your tutorials. You make everything look easy. I have done a few top down raglan sweaters, but, they don't look as beautiful as this one. I will have to give it a try --- once my schedule clears up. Thank you so much!
In your first increase row, you have described inserting the left hand needle into the make one LEFT stitch as going in from “back to front”. I’m pretty sure it’s actually front to back.
While working on my first big project, a long bodied turtleneck sweater, I ran into a concern I'm sure had to be addressed somewhere, but I didn't run across it in my research. I did the body first and then the arms. Half way through the first arm I noticed I was rubbing the body of the sweater around so much I was making it look worn and it was starting to get a bit fuzzy looking! To remedy the situation, I folded it half in on itself, outside in and tied it into a roll which laid in much nicer in my lap anyways I found. Now the part that rubs on my clothing is the inside of the sweater, if it pills or fuzzes, it won't show.
Hi Staci, I really love watching your videos and I can’t thank you enough for What I learned from you, I cant actually find a video tutorial better than yours for anything, so I wish you can make me a favor and make a video for a top-down reglan with a v neck in the front side. All my love and Best wishes.
You make it look so easy. I hope when I start making this pattern that it will be *as easy* for me. This is such a detailed video. Thank You So Much for sharing it with us.
This is one area I love having two interchangable needle sets. I actually slip the arms right onto another set of needles because I have getting the loops back to a needle after the rest of the sweater has been created. They always seem to tuck back into the work. Even if you only have one set of interchangable, use smaller needles with smaller chords! Works amazingly!
That's a great point. I noticed the same thing when I started working on sleeves of my sweater a few days ago. I had purchased extra cords and end stoppers and added a note to project notebook to not only use a new cord, but also leave waste yarn - just to be sure. I will do the same but either with a thin cord or waste yarn for v-neck. I find that by the time the sweater is done, the v-neck stitches have really settled into the work.
@@Enig_Mata YYEESSS! It drives me nuts to spend more time getting the yarn back onto a needle that it does to knit the whole sleeve if I only use waist yarn because the stitches disappear! I think also, that the next sweater I made I’m going to knit the sleeves BEFORE the body after the separation happens. 🤔 That way I’m not pulling at the sleeve because of all the bulk ya know. Do the body last. 😉
@@allisonhodge4576 Another excellent tip on the body. I keep twisting and re-twisting when the sleeves are done after the body. I saw that idea on a video that does two-at-a-time sleeves. I did not really care for it as I'm not a fan of magic loop, but I may come to it at a later time. I was trying to learn too many techniques at once and it became annoying.
@@Enig_Mata oh ABSOLUTELY! I know how to do magic loop but I find doing them one at a time actually goes way faster! And I’m pretty good at keeping track of my rows only because I use knitlinx (rainbow) stitch markers that I put together with the open style safety pins (some people use these as stitch markers) but that way I can knit 9 rows none stop and when I get to the end of the chain of them, I add 9 to my row counter! Otherwise I’d never get the sleeves even! Lol. But yes- I too have tried learning too many techniques at once. And then when I try to use those skills again I have to relearn! One at a time😉
When you do the m1l, you say "put the needle in from back to front", which is the same thing you say for m1r. For m1l, you are actually putting the needle in from the front. Just wanted to point it out in case anyone was confused by that :-)
I love this, thank you. Seems every time I attempt to make a sweater for me, it comes out way too big, and I use the yarn and the pattern size correctly as well as the needles the pattern called for to use, and still comes out way too big for me LOL, my friend gets them too.
Thank you for this tutorial! I really like how the neck shaping is done at the start of the sweater. I don't care for the brioche collar. Would it be possible to just do a regular ribbing neckline? I'm fairly new to sweater knitting.
I like the look of this sweater and I think I could do it. However I have short neck and this type of cowl thing is uncomfortable and makes me look like a turtle. How do you change the neckline to say a crew neck on something like this?
So perfect - except for the sizing. I'm just a little off - a 46" bust instead of a 44". Thinking I can just gauge it up a little... Any advice would be welcome!
That's an easy modification...just knit the pattern as written, in the same gauge, but continue the raglan increases until you get the size you need. I explain in the video how to match up the underarm areas to make sure you have a good fit.
Thank you for the Tutorial. I am having problems with sleeves. After putting the on hold on needles , pick up and knit, does it mean I have to work next 5 rounds of decrease immediately? Or work 5 rounds of knit then 7 rounds of decrease? Hope you could help as this part is not very clear for me in the pattern.❤
Hi Stacy thanks for the beautiful video as I read the instructions it said to fit bust measurement and actual measurement which measurement should we consider to fit our measurement for eg if our bust size is 36 inches.
Look at the measurements "To Fit Bust"...that is your actual body measurement. The "Actual Measurement" is the actual size of the finished sweater, which is a little bigger than the body size it fits, because it's a relaxed fit sweater.
Stacey I'd like to know, when a swatch is washed and blocked and you find your gauge is off, can this yarn be used again for swatching? Thanks for all your hard work. Really appreciated.
Love your tutorials.... There is a pattern/kit on Knit Picks called Fuchsia Crescent shawl that uses module knit shells. It is advanced....any chance you could demo this?
Thank you so much for all your vids, you are a great teacher. Please tell me the name of the board you’re working on. I really need to purchase, but don’t know the name of it. Thank you
That blocking board is a little tiny thing that is great for use in my videos, but not great for actually blocking knits. The large blocking boards like this are not currently available. I recommend "blocking mats", available from several retailers. The best ones have a grid printed on them.
Here in aust we don’t have the yarns.. online Oder only I guess? Wondering if you can suggest a different collar to make it more masculine? Would just simple k1p1 type of rib work? And less rows of course.. coz the pattern and your instructions are quite good, I’d like to make it for myself .. love ya work 💖🌈🐻
I am in the middle of knitting my first sweater which, incidentally, is a top down raglan too. It's a bit simpler/less fussy pattern as it has no neck shaping or collar though but I'm not super fond of the raw cast-on edge so I was thinking about adding a small collar and wondering how to if I have enough yarn left once I'm done (which I should because while like longer sweaters and sleeves, I am not a long woman).
Hi Staci! Would you have the name of the light blue color you used for all of the in progress samples? I looked on the iloveknitting website and can’t tell if you used the “washed teal” or “sea foam”… thank you for any help! I LOVED the color of the samples!
VeryPink Knits Thank you. I was actually referring to the progress samples that are partially knit- those are in a lighter blue than the ball of sailor blue. Thank you for replying, though. I really appreciate the time you take to respond to your followers.
Sorry! I typed up the color names a while ago in prepping for the video, I didn't realize I didn't have the other blue in there! The light blue color I use for demonstration is Seafoam.
I am having a difficult time transitioning from the brk round to the brp round I just can't seem to understand the transition portion. Very difficult for me...
Staci, do you ever teach about schematics, I find it very difficult for some reason since I'm RU-vid taught to knit. Can you make any suggestions on learning schematics and how to get the right count for a sweater since patterns usually fall short of a good fit for mr?
I noticed you did a flat gauge swatch rather than a circular swatch. Do you find much difference in your gauge by using a flat swatch vs. a circular swatch?
Just double-checking: Swatch-measuring is done "after" washing/blocking? (By doing that can't one fudge the sizing/gauge just by blocking to whatever size that the pattern calls for?)
Yes, measure after the swatched has been washed/dried the same way the finished knit will be treated, so you will have an accurate measurement of what the gauge in the actual garment will be after washing and drying (wash and dry according to the instructions on the yarn label).
I am an advanced knitter and have started this twice and come out with wrong sts. counts after the yoke. Are there any errata? The pattern seems straight forward and wondering where I might have gone wrong.
Hmm...I haven't heard from anyone else that any of the sizes have mistakes. Regardless, when you're working a top-down raglan, exact stitch counts don't really matter. If you're getting a good fit, even if you're off a couple or a few stitches, it will still come out fine.
I tried to make the collar on the baby button up sweater I was making. I gave up because I didn’t get it right. Do you have a video showing how to make it!
So, I’m at 174 stitches, 34 for each sleeve but 51 in front but 55 for back. What did I do wrong? What should the spread between the front and back be, please? (Making the largest size) Knitting math isn’t my strong suit. If there’s somewhere else to ask for help, please let me know.
If you look at the section of the pattern titled "Divide for Back, Front and Sleeves" you'll see the final stitch counts for left sleeve, back, right sleeve, and front.
I am a new subscriber And Really love your channel VERY EASY TO FOLLOW TY XXXX MERRY XMAS TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM SORRY I HOPE ITS OK TO WRITE IN BIG LETTERS ITS JUST IM PARTICALLY SIGHTED XXXX
Love your tutorials! I consider myself an “advanced beginner” only because I successfully completed the Rodeo Drive Poncho with your help. Now, I’m attempting the Wonderful Woolly Sweater, have completed the body of the sweater (looks great), and am stuck on the sleeve instructions. I’m panicking, because I’m not seeing any tutorial instructions. Help!
In the video, I demonstrate how to separate the sleeves...put those live stitches back on the needles, and follow the instructions for gentle decreasing down the sleeve. Please let me know if you have a specific question about the sleeves.
VeryPink Knits Following your video instructions (35:21), I successfully separated the sleeves, did the cable cast on (4, pm, 4 more for underarm area), and then completed the body of the sweater. The video then goes to the cowl neck. I’ve watched the video multiple times, but don’t see instructions for the sleeves. Following the pattern directions, I’ve slipped 42 stitches from my stitch holder back on my 10.5 circular needles, and this is where I get lost because there is a gap between the slipped on stitches and the 8 underarm cast on stitches. I guess I’m unsure of what “pick up and knit first 4 sts along sts cast on for underarm, place marker, pick up and knit rem 4 stitches” means.
Yes, you're going to "pick up and knit" over that gap to create extra stitches there. Here is my video on that technique: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FWSacwEfWH8.html
Brioche and fisherman’s ribs are EXACTLY the same stitches. In the fisherman’s rib, you simply pick up your yarn over when you insert your needle in the row below.
Staci, I'm a RU-vid subscriber. I decided to make my first sweater using the "Wonderful Wooly Sweater" pattern, & your video tutorial. My question is about that Paintbox yarn. Pretty much, I detest acrylic, but you kept saying how nice it felt, & machine washable. Is it pretty much soft-enough directly on the skin? The closest yarn shop is 1.5 hours away (Oklahoma). I didn't know which is the best way to contact you, so here I am. Thank you.🙂🥢🧶 (You may see this same post on other sites of yours.)
Yes, I replied to your email and your FB message. I won't knit or wear anything that feels acrylic. This yarn is really nice, and feels great. If you are unsure, purchase one skein and have a look at it before you order a sweater's worth.
You may have to create a free account on LoveKnitting to get the pattern, but it's free, and having an account is helpful for accessing both free and paid patterns on their site.
