It's a space-age analogue percussion monster that's definitely from another planet. Here's my review of the SGR1806-20.

Still trying to catch my breath! What a great demonstration. I’d never be able to make the same sound twice.

Another cool video. Thanks 🙏. I have a question about working in a shed if that’s okay. I’m thinking of moving my mini studio and modular set up to a brick built shed. Do you have any advice about regulating temperature and humidity/damp or have you not found this to be a problem. I know you are super busy at the moment but if you have any nuggets of advice that would be great.

Ha, yeah, I've never really got a handle on it. But I've improved things by putting insulation and panels in the ceiling, but also drilling holes in the walls so that there's some air flow otherwise it gets all drippy. Put a rug down or something to take the chill off the floor. And use a heater. What I should do is pull everything out and put in a second skin of plasterboard with insulation between... but that's a bit of a job. So i just cope as best I can and as long as things aren't actually exposed to the elements they seem to be ok.

Hi Robin. You did also test the SSF ultra perc. Which would you suggest to get, SGR1806-20 or SSF Ultra perc? - I finally managed to save some money to get a SSF UP and now this module pops up and blows my mind ... You speak about it beautifully like a poet :D,
@MoltenMusicTech

I haven't tested the Ultra Perc, sorry.

Developer's comment: The Ultra Perc is an excellent module and is better suited for synthesizing percussive and more classical undistorted sounds due to its core based on filters. The SGR core, on the other hand, is based on oscillators and their modulations, as well as a complex noise core, making it stronger in synthesizing metallic sounds. Soft sounds can also be created with it, but usually after a couple of minutes of exploration and knob turning, I find myself teleporting into industrial-space territory. Check out more reviews and think about which type of sounds and variations suit you best.

@@user-fo3ol9cp3i Thank you! And I appreciate your choice! Yes, I will continue to work in this direction. Weird but manageable, useful and beautiful devices for free creativity and free people.

All very interesting and it in parts it sounded excellent. I can't help thinking that modular is transforming into a new beast. One where rigs are made up of very specialist devises that do everything for you eg "Drum modules". It's like having a rack of synths that have different purposes. Oh wait we did that all ready. Anyway, the concept of seeing how far you can push your imagination and the gear with just the fundamental building block ( VCOs VCAs VCFs etc etc) seems to be getting lost. I'm not saying either concept is good or bad but I think I prefer the building from basics, even if it is less instantly gratifying.

@@MoltenMusicTech I remember how excited I was when I realised I could create a four step sequencer using a fixed voltage + four VCAs and a rotating switch. It was the sense of achievement because no one showed me or told me how to do it. Of course I could have bought a module that just did it for me. So for me the journey of discover is part of the overall enjoyment of modular. Thanks for being receptive to my comments.

You would be better of using a MPC One(+), LiveII, X and a Befaco InAmp to route the mpc's output in your modular system. Than you can create any, any, any sound you want with hi-profile DAC's. it also has drum modelers. The device also has 8 cv out, so you can have 8 virtual keyboards or 4 with 4 gates.
@MoltenMusicTech
@MoltenMusicTech 5 месяцев назад
Why would I want all that gear to try to approximate an analogue module that has its own character in spades? I don’t want any sound, I want what this has to give. An mpc? Weirdest suggestion ever 🤣
@AnalogDude_
@AnalogDude_ 5 месяцев назад
Well, it's a (drum) sampler with 8 CV output. way make it yourself hard? you can make 128 variants of your drum on a single keyboard. you can layer sounds up to 4, finalize it and add another 3 layers and keep on going. the best modular synth module and sequencer ever. i got the MPC X variant and building my modular synth around it, since it has 8 analog out + 8 cv and a module with 8 analog in to route the audio through the modular. it also has tb-303 emulator, tr-909, tr-808, etc, etc. lots of virtual guitar amps, compressors, delay, voice, etc, etc. Via the audio input you can apply all these effects and route it out again via the internal mixer. @@MoltenMusicTech

I'm sure that's fabulous for you and i'm sure you can build a modular around it but it doesn't do anything that i wish to do. I like modules - it's what I got into this for and the SGR1806-20 is a lot of fun :D Thanks though.

Well, routing this sound through analog filters and 8 CV outputs is a no brainer. pressure sensitive knobs.@@MoltenMusicTech
