Knocked myself out, lost my memory and did the Chewbacca...

Had a nasty crash after a case on a jump. Hooked the back wheel. Went over hard and knocked myself out and lost memory for the rest of the day. At the time I was wearing the Specialized Ambush MIPS helmet, but since that was now useless, I purchased the Fox Dropframe.
Thanks to THE BIKE PILOT for looking after me!
I since purchased 2 Fox Dropframe PRO helmets (these Fox Dropframe helmets have MIPS rotational protection).

Head injuries SUCK! Anyone else had something like this?
@phx4669
@phx4669 3 года назад
Sorry to see that happen Rob. The wreck itself looked innocent enough but side impacts on the head is bad. I lost memory immediately before the crash. I remember hitting the face of the jump but nothing after until I woke up in pain. To lose memory for the rest of the day, that is scary. Glad you are back at it.

I learned from my younger days of motorcross, not only is your protective gear key to surviving a crash, but actually practicing "how to fall" can save your ass(or head in this case). I do not use clip in pedals for this reason. Excellent video! Glad you are doing better and most importantly back to riding! 👍

That's a very smart and misleading marketing slogan. If you would have checked the full list you would have seen that there is close to none correlation between price and safety rating (3rd place 50$, towards the end of the list 180$, 18$ helmet better than 10 times more expensive).

Hi Rob, Chris in Lake Tahoe here. Enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from you. I too am recovering from a nasty crash similar to yours on September 6. Small lip, short gap, OTB for me. Fractured ribs, big contusions to side and elbow. No loss of consciousness from the head impact but a hard hit to the helmet. I retired that helmet and haven’t been able to get back on the bike quite yet, so was shopping for a new helmet online this week and hadn’t decided what to buy. Thanks for the tip about Virginia Tech’s ratings. I may also buy the Dropframe. Stay safe, keep ip the great work and #nomorecrashies!

Riding back from my sisters one evening up and over Ditchling beacon about 12 miles I was taken out by a badger 200 metres from my home,it run through me like I wasn't there. It hit me from the left running in to the front wheel or bottom bracket,a milli second of scuttling paws warning in the dark,twisting me and Levo as if in slow motion through the air with the badger lite up by my lights,no doubt a badger and landing shoulder then helmet impact . I will get a new one but really not impressed with what is out there,got to push for change. Thank god for motor bike gloves! Great work

That's actually very scary. Had a similar experience while biking at night out in the Nevada desert. Was with my son and, on a slightly smaller jump, went face forward and hit the floor face first. Lost conscious for a good 30+ seconds. Half helm did provide some protection, but I will NEVER ride terrain with jumps/downhill without a full face helm. I still go out in the desert at night, but mostly simple fire trails. I considered the Fox Speedframe Pro but I prefer something with a bit more side/back protection, similar to this model.

This happened to me last year. I was alone and crashed hard. I remember being in a lot of pain and thinking I should sit for a while. I then blacked out. I felt like I was asleep and dreaming and forgot what I had been doing. When I came to, I was surprised I wasn’t in my bed. I was actually walking my bike down the trail and had taken off my removable chin bar. And, another rider was walking his bike with me, as he came upon me and knew something was wrong. It took me several minutes to remember where I was and what was going on. I told the other rider he didn’t need to keep walking with me, as I felt bad for ruining his ride. After he left, I wasn’t sure if he was real or if I had imagined him. It was definitely a scary event.

@Rob Rides EMTB - ugh. If anyone has been riding / jumping for any length of time, these things can / will happen. Much more so if you are intentionally riding parks or jumps. Glad to see you are back with us. Full face doesn't solve these problems, but it sure does protect your face. The only "feedback" I have for stuff like this is to eject early, but once you case... it is balling up and rolling with it. Thank you for sharing and I hope you are doing well. CTEs are no joke. :(

5 months ago I had the worst crash ever in my 35 years of mountain biking. Multiple broken bones and got knocked out for the first time ever. I wasn’t out for very long and was lucid after coming to. I was too hurt to continue riding down the hill so I started walking. After about 10 minutes I realized I couldn’t remember which trail I was on. 2 guys who saw the crash asked if I needed help to which I replied yes. The broken bones were no fun to deal with, but scariest part of the whole thing was the head injury. For the next 4 months I had headaches, brain fog, compromised balance, vertigo and ringing ears. Thankfully, most of these symptoms have subsided but I was terrified that I’d scrambled my brains forever. I was finally able to get back on the bike 3 weeks ago and I’m doing well. At the time of the accident I was wearing a Troy Lee Designs A2 helmet. It got flattened on one side from the impact but undoubtedly saved my life. After careful consideration I finally decided on a new helmet to replace the ruined one. Like you, I chose the Fox Dropframe. Hope you have recovered well.

I agree, every time you hit your head with any helmet no matter the sport. Change them!!! Yes it's expensive but it's your head! Do now buy used helmets for sure! Thanks Rob, we don't really hear see that much about why is so important to replace the helmet after we hit it!!! I've seen some people and even pros dropping them or throwing them on the floor.....
@jasonkendal3407

I just had a similar impact to the floor - Fox speed frame - similar to that helmets without the cheek pads. I pounded the ground with my knuckles sprained the left hand and broke the index finger just behind the knuckle. once that was sorted ( taped to immobilized for two weeks) I checked out my Helmet and discovered the MIPS system was twisted 20 degrees. Closer inspection revealed the yellow plastic anchor popped and one other stretched. I am totally sold on this system and on the enduro Foxhead helmets for the side-impact coverage, and for me the fit and airflow. Initially tried the POC but they do not fit my square head. I hit the top of the helmet at 11 o'clock with the chin tucked - impact to head, left triceps/ shoulder, and hands-on the grips punching the ground, with a torque moment of the bars accelerating my right hand counter-clockwise punching into the hardpan dirt. New helmet ordered.

What a great video Rob and a hugely important thing to talk about. Having returned to MTB'ing after 10 years off, I basically bought a load of cheap kit to get started again - helmet included. But obviously it's one item you shouldn't scrimp on, so I've taken the plunge and used my Wiggle Platinum discount to buy myself a Fox Dropframe Pro MIPS for £158. Bargain. If you weren't a Fox ambassador before, you damn well should be now 😂

Glad you're ok. Might be a good idea to take a cycling break for the next few days and get someone to keep an eye on your behaviour, just in case what you think you're doing and what you're actually doing are different. Give your brain a chance to recover fully. A good mate of mine knocked himself out for several hours in a forest trail... he woke up thinking he was lying down in his living room with pine trees coming out of the carpet and touching the ceiling. He too lost memory of what happened... although from where his bike was he pieced together that he hit a tree at full speed. Riding alone has its risks.

No good! This is the only video I have seen of Rob’s that I don’t really like. I love the message, I just do not like seeing people I like getting knocked out or injured. Helmets are the bee’s knee’s. I ride motorcycles and refuse to ride without the best helmet money can buy. I’ve rode my whole life and enjoy it like nothing else. The only way to live long while enjoying it, is to wear a quality helmet that fits well. I have the same POV when it comes to riding bicycles. I really like the looks of that Fox helmet Rob is wearing while showing us wear he got Ko’d.

I am glad that you are back Mate! .. and fully recovered. Your aftermath is spot on a no you send very very important message. Thank you! IMHO It would be worth to check exactly what went wrong. Again with all the respect you did not that bad.. the jump is not the monster though the case is huge and serious consequences. I am by no means expert.. my couple of cents: unclip.. never never try your skills or stretch your abilities clipped,.. flats would let you take the gear out and maybe bailout? Flats would help you learn to save yourself? On landing you were extended and you squeezed nicely.. so vertical speed and g where not the problem though I am not sure about suspension.. but what through you off was horizontal speed reduction and inertia took you front and right.. bike went with you because you are clipped in.. but no rolling and there was zero reaction.. on take off you had enough of speed IMHO the jump squeeze and extension where to early.. like you would like to jump over the the lip and not from the lip.. take a safer jump and try later extensions to see the better results.. my first small jumps went from 1,t meter to 2,5m distance just working on this part with the same speed (on small small lip). again.. I don’t want to make you feel bad about all that.. this is IMHO excellent lesson we all can take. There are not enough movies talking about those kind of things.. I hope you get my point..

Experienced stuff like this cause it happened to my dad when we were biking in the remote area in the Croatian mountains, on the descent for unknown reason he missed the bend and just continued straight out of the road and went over the bar, hit the ground with his head and he didn't have the helmet. Luckily he hit the grass, not the rocks. But impact was really hard, he was bloody and face completely swollen and blue, like Mike Tyson knocked him out. He had no recollection what happened, he didn't remember where were we, how did we got there, why we were there, where he lives and so on, he kept repeating the same questions all the time, couldn't remember anything I kept repeating and explaining. I couldn't know if he had internal head bleeding so I called the ambulance but it took them almost an hour to find us, they called me 5 times at least cause they were getting lost trying to find us. That was the longest hour of my life because if he had internal bleeding it could have been the end. I was so worried cause his memory was not coming back, even after an hour he still had no clue like just after the crash. He only came to senses in the hospital some 3 hours after the crash but luckily he had no internal bleeding. Unfortunately he damaged his shoulder ligaments and had to have surgery. But memory of the fall never came back.

I had a dilemma, back in the summer, when looking for a new helmet for my 10 year old daughter. She is very much into XCO as well as trail riding. Her cross country races are technical to a degree but from next year the technical challenges will increase quite a lot as has been the trend in the UCI XCO races. Most of the kids of her age group and older tend to wear roadie style helmets but I feel that they don't offer enough protection for the type of riding she is doing. Eventually I bought a POC Tectal Race Spin helmet in white/black XS. It is a bit of a standout helmet but it's comfortable, safe and provides me with a high level of assurance (and her) should she ever come off her bike, and my daughter loves it. A lot of money but money well spent.

I had a crash years ago when basically the back of my helmet broke off. I'm sure it was a met helmet. @@regeb000 Uh. Better do a good research before you say something is not true. There are multiple studies. Some of them (mostly old with outdated methodology) show no correlation. " www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2239342/ And this is just top of an iceberg. There are other amazing things you will get from consecutive TBIs. Depression is one of them.

@@sztigirigi Well, it looks like you didn't do your research, and you didn't read the study you cited in full. Your statement is still not true. Nowhere in the study is any reference to a time period of two weeks or a "total break". The study you mentioned is interesting but not convincing. It shows a statistical correlation in small numbers, that doesn't mean causation. 11 times higher may sound much, but if you understand the underlying statistics of small numbers it isn't. Quotes from the study: The major limitation of this study is that cases and controls were interviewed by different methods and therefore potential bias from this source is of concern. As with many of the previouThere s studies, the statistical analyses were limited by small sample sizes. Therefore, the authors can not exclude chance as a potential explanation for the findings.

@@sztigirigi no doubt TBI is very harmful and can cause severe conditions. For example cronic traumatic encephalopathy. But the correlation with ALS is still only a statistical hint.

Funnily enough one of those helmets arrived in the post today! £180 wasted....unless I crash, then its a complete bargain!!!

Always, ALWAYS , use a full-face helmet!!! There are cross-country ones that are light and reliable. If it weren't for mine, I'd be without teeth for sure, and probably with a crushed nose and facial bones. Do the math. Do you see motorbike riders go on the trails with just a jet helmet? No, you don't! Because you have to have a 360 degrees protection. A hit like this could break also a full face one, but you want to get the best protection possible, for any circumstance. They are not bulky or heavy. They protect your face.

Great helmet, shame about the fixed peak and non adjustable retention cradle, but only one of 37 given a 5 star rating.

Get a MIPs equipped helmet. I smack my head hard on concrete and I did not even get a headache. I was going 45kph at the time as well.

This was some advice I read somewhere. Buy the best helmet within a budget you are still willing to throw away. Because a new helmet is probably better than a helmet that you've had an impact with, so you shouldn't stick with that one.

This kind of accidents can easily give you a concussion; big or less heavy depends on by how your helmet can absorb the impact, slowing down the speed your brain impact to the skull; one concussion can not to be a big problem, more concussions, too much frequently, can; NFL players know it very well.
