KNOW THE RULES: New California Bicycle Omnibus Bill

Note: we filmed this before horrible incident in Newport Beach, which only reaffirms what I say here and we already know: Americans are not properly educated about the rules for cyclists, and lack of infrastructure leaves riders too vulnerable to crazy people. The new bill in California goes a long way...as long as it's understood and enforced.

I've said it before and will repeat it here: cyclists need a nation-wide campaign similar to what MADD did 30 years ago to fight drunk driving. They focused on local education (think about the crashed cars at schools), nationwide education (PSAs), increased driver education (driver test questions), and increased laws and enforcement. I've also had several encounters like this in 25+ years. I once stopped to talk to a woman that turned left across the lane with a group of about 10 of us in a paceline. Her response was "You have to watch out for the traffic." She simply wouldn't acknowledge that bikes are also "traffic."

@@worstretirementever Except for the part around 3:50 when you insinuate that class I&II eMTB riders on trail are more disruptive than the same bikes on road or bike paths. That sentiment is a bit divisive and not representative of the overall mission to protect cyclists, make cycling accessible, but most importantly for cyclists to be responsible and respectful stewards. Overall you do an incredible job representing that ethos but let's not leave out eMTB! Most of us are very respectful and courteous on street, path, trail, or any venue. Thanks for your dedication and keep up the hard work!

As bicyclists, we have the right to occupy a lane of traffic. However, that's not always the wise thing to do. If you have room to move over and let faster traffic go by, you should. If you feel the need to occupy an entire lane and impede traffic just because you can, you might consider seeing a therapist before you are forced to see the E.R.

I am not confident, at all, that police will understand or enforce these laws. The police I've encountered on a bike have been 100% useless and have in fact gone out of their way to forgive awful, dangerous driving. The police I've encountered deeply despise "cyclists" (as if we are a type of human) and will strain every fiber of their being to try to blame cyclists. I don't hate the police, but this has honestly been my experience.

Big misconception many drivers have is that cyclists pay no road tax. Can’t tell you the number of times it’s been shouted at me. Fact is I own a business with a fleet of trucks and likely pay more in “road tax” in a month than the guy does in 10 years.
@JornBor
@JornBor Год назад
Also, essentially everybody who pays any kind of tax, pays road tax. This is because road tax alone is not enough to build and maintain all car infrastructure so other taxes are also used for the roads.
@michaelstratton5223
@michaelstratton5223 Год назад
Most states don't even have a road tax anyways. I'm from Michigan and I've never heard of a "road tax". Theres DMV/secretary of state registration fees, but it's a stretch to call it a tax since it doesn't every year. If certain Americans like the idea of "road tax" so much, they should move to the northern European countries where there's an actual yearly road tax for every vehicle owned, and it's quite hefty. Drivers here don't know how cheap and easy they have it.

I live in northern NJ just outside of NYC and I a very similar incident almost deja vu. As I rolled up on a red light a car that was waiting there moved over and pinned me to the curb at the traffic light. When I asked why he did that he told me very aggressively that he was making a right turn. I did point out that is what his directional signal was for. That was obviously a lie because when the light went green he continued straight while he and his wife verbally harassed me as they drove past. A few blocks further down at another traffic light he pinned me even deeper in a parked car with just barely enough room for me to squeeze through. Right or wrong I open hand slapped the hood of his vehicle as I passed him. Once I was passed once again by him with more verbal abuse from both him and his lovely wife. Then at the next light he pulled over got in the middle of the road and took a swing at me that I was fortunately able to avoid. Probably because he was about the same age and physical condition of that guy who was on his way to play golf ⛳ when he got to meet Emily. Needless to say my adrenaline was spiked. But I rolled on and finished my ride with no further issues. The biggest problem with the human race is that it’s full of people. Give me a dog anytime!!!

It's insane how low the standard is for drivers knowing the law. There should really be at least a knowledge test drivers have to take every few years. In Oregon, a law went into effect over three years ago that allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yield. I still get yelled at by motorists when they see me do it (and I don't just blow through the signs I actually slow down and look before proceeding, unlike most of the cars screaming through the neighborhood near my office). Often these same people yelling then roll through a red light to turn right at an intersection with a "no right on red" sign 🙄. But it's my fault I guess, since I'm not even supposed to be there ("roads are made for cars!" 😝)

This is complicated issue, but it seems to me that the biggest problem is a general increase in social aggression and dysfunction. If people had any sense, most of them wouldn't intentionally risk killing and maiming cyclists, solely on the principle that a person is a person. The ubiquitous casual disregard for human life, and the increasing willingness to actually hurt people are the real problem. Guys like the one in the video should be so rare that this sort of thing just isn't observed day to day. Unfortunately, most of us have have seen "that guy". It just shouldn't be a common occurrence that drivers intentionally threaten, or hit cyclists and pedestrians. It happens to me often. One of two things has to happen. Drivers need to develop a conscience, OR they need to be afraid to hurt people. There is absolutely no reason for them to be afraid, because they will not be called to account except under the most extreme and unusual circumstances. Laws are not really laws if they are not enforced. As far as the law enforcement community is concerned, cyclists and pedestrians are irrelevant. When police begin prosecuting hit and runs, that will be the first step.

Full disclosure - the numerous biking videos from Phil G. and Katie Kookaburra that I watch, while very enjoyable content, they can be quite cringeworthy. Watching them ride in the midst and thick of all that vehicular traffic, often inches away from getting clipped or worse just run over, makes me cringe so hard with every pass. I honestly don't know how they do it. I am fortunate that my environment has over 120 miles of dedicated paved multi-use fitness trails - I almost never ride on vehicular surface streets - I just feel as though the next car that passes me is going to crush me - either out of some hateful anti-cycling rage or just an idiot driving while jacking around with their idiot device - I just can't do it. All the best to Phil and Katie and all our fellow cyclists around the world - happy riding and may we all ride safely miles and miles and miles deep into our elder years. Peace friends and neighbors.

I don't drive a car. I only bicycle & I've bicycled from my home in Southern California up toward Oregon & to Missouri and I've never had a bicycle license. I got tired of being pulled over for I.D. check so I got a CA ID card. I showed it once and the cop did a background check and found out my driver's license was valid. He got all mad. I told him I wasn't operating a motor vehicle & I didn't need to show him my driver's license. He thought I was some kind of outlaw or something. There definitely a lot of irate drivers that bicyclists have to contend with on the road. Happy trails. P.S. I almost was killed by an 18 wheeler in the Arizona desert.

I'M 65 and have been riding a bicycle actively since I was 14 as for some of these bicycle laws I will not take them for granted if you do take them for granted, , and think these laws are going to protect you I'm sorry to say that's not happening because 99.9% of the motorist will not have any clues about these laws, whether new or old. I'm from San Jose and some members there from a local bicycle club were advocating for new laws for the protection for bicyclist and this was way back in the 70's since then things has changed and I welcome it, with that said I'm still not take anything for granted I now live in Holland where the bicycle infrastructure is way better than the U.S. but here again no body is truly protected, example, my son had the green light and was proceeding through an intersection, the cars making a right hand turn had to hold at the RED light, well damn, red light or not a car made a turn on the red and slammed into my so, thank god he was ok less some scrapes and bruises and a totaled bicycle a few of my friends here had nasty bicycle accidents, one crashed into an on coming cyclist, end game, broken ribs and punctured lung and a host of scrapes and bruises, one other was pushed over by another cyclist, end game a broken collar bone and so on, E-Bikes we got plenty of them over here, and MANY people here are getting hurt on these things, mostly elderly people who really don't understand how deadly these things are, bicycle / E-BIKE accidents has risen by nearly 25%! Way back in the 80's my father was killed while riding his bicycle on the BIG ISLAND of HAWAII he had this attitude that motorist will give him space and respect him as a cyclist on the roadway well that didn't happen, what you are doing while producing this video is exactly what he would do, only looking forward and never looking back to pay attention of the on coming traffic from behind, within this video I also heard A SIREN but you didn't look where it was coming from, myself whether making a video or not I'd been looking all around me, I would not be so worried about being hit by the emergency vehicle I'd be more worried about a motorist trying to make room, in saying the motorist could be giving you the BIG TIME SMACK DOWN! My dad he was training for a self promoted charity bicycle ride for the opening a local community bicycle shop in the town of Pahoa, during this process he asked me if I could supply him with some bicycle parts so I was gathering up the basics for him, tires, tubes, saddles, grips, pedals and so on, ok now I had several big boxes ready to go and I was going fly these boxes over personally to surprise him with these needed bicycle parts so I was ready to go in 2 weeks time, well this didn't happed because I received the phone call of his passing.

Like they still get mad at cyclists, but before they get mad *they make sure to do everything in their power to not hit them*, and I've never seen a driver antagonize a cyclist in the road. Obviously my time here is limited, but considering Maryland/DC I would have at least one close call or negative interaction with a driver a week, I'll consider it at least plausible that maybe Europe cares more about cyclists.

I remember being a kid and riding down to the fire department to get my bicycle licensed. Wow, that was a million years ago! But then in college, I licensed bicycles for the campus police department. Still have a few licenses on my bikes from way back then. But yes, it was a well-intentioned, but stupid idea. Fees were capped at $6 and $3 for renewals, so they quickly ended up costing cities & municipalities more money to administer than the revenue they generated. Quickly ended. SUPPOSED to discourage theft. When people never kept track of their serial numbers, this was one way to do it - WAY before home computers. Walk signals apply to bikes in 2024? Cool! Didn't know this. Thanks! You need front & rear lights, a rear-view mirror and a helmet cam if you're gonna be casually riding streets like that. The driver of the white truck at 4:26 sure didn't respect your safety, life OR the law! Not cool!

Looks like a scene from Ventura Blvd where these drivers seem to gravitate all the time. Everyday. The special is the driving on the right hand lane when there are parked cars and then with no indicator, just cut right in front of you creating deadly consequences.

Ventura seems like it's an angle street which cut cities in half saving everybody all kinds of time. If you have to ride on it to get somewhere, then you are not retired. It's a stroad which is honestly deadly to pedestrians and cyclists. Ventura's back alleys and sidewalks would be safer to ride. This is one of many roads in America which easily could be rebuilt for better ped/bike safety.

These laws might save you in court but they're not going to change how society at large views road cyclists. Personally as a cyclist I always ride in the road but I never take up a ton of lane space so cars can easily pass. Even I get annoyed at road cyclists with their 10k carbon fiber bikes who take up most of the lane, and they're always going extremely slow too. I give myself just enough room to avoid any car doors from swinging open and hitting me, and if there aren't any parked cars I'll ride even closer to the curb. Cars shouldn't have to do a full lane change just to get by you

@esgee3829
@esgee3829 Год назад
these signs, which are all over california iirc, should be changed to "bikes use full lane" not "may use full lane" or "share". drivers need aggressive language that resonates. just as on their freeways, signs should read "keep right except to pass" instead of "slower traffic keep right". The lack of aggressive language means even among drivers, passing on the right is common all over the usa. unlike in europe or most parts of asia or africa (where motorways exist like in parts of north africa and south africa).

There’s room to pass on Ventura. Valley vista and MoorPark I’m actually holding up traffic. Ventura during the day I go the same speed as cars or they have a whole lane to get around instead of trying to squeeze through

@@worstretirementever just such a huge volume of traffic. I guess it depends where you live. For me I would rather go south and take burbank to go east west or else do the back roads south of entire like Wells.

In car vs cyclist, the cyclist may win the lawsuit, but the car will flatten you every time. No law will protect you if you don't protect yourself- at all times.

being in the right means nothing after you have been crushed by a car. You might notice the empty sidewalks pictured in this video. That's where I ride, the slightly more obstacles keeps me and my bike handling skills sharp. the only real concern is presenting yourself , or even limiting your activities , to not scare the occasional pedestrian or woman with a baby stroller. Of course, if I were some hard riding speed fiend, I would have to reasonably take my chances amongst the cars. I go all day at a slow speed that works fine for sidewalk riding and rubbernecking the sights as I pass.
