I don't care about the statistics - I hear what she means about undervaluing ourselves and how this keeps us from really living and doing the work we're meant to do. It's a story worth telling and repeating because not enough people are doing work that matters and mostly because most everyone is just trying to survive. We can thrive and it starts by valuing ourselves more so we can serve others better.

Katrina Tan I agree with you on the sentiment, but the reality is, we don't control their thinking, nor their bank accounts, which would be the source of such compensation. People with extreme biases will most likely deem the object of their hate as worthless, along with being arrogant and grandiose. If God can't change their hearts, who can?

Establish what YOU can control. Imagine if (like Casey Brown, no relation) you have a business and found that your value is double, so you double your price, if you lose half of your business because of your value, you haven't lost money, you've gained more time.

@Son0fHobs

I've seen just how true this is. It's amazing the income difference if you know how to sell yourself. It makes all the difference if you can show them the value you provide and then convince them you're giving them a good deal. They're thrilled, you get paid well, and there's a good relationship after. Obviously some clients will want cheaper services, but if you're earning 2x the amount, you only need 1/2 the number of clients to earn the same amount. Eventually you'll still build and expand until you are earning 2x the original amount.

I seem to have the cautious, humble nature she ascribes to women even though I'm a man. The ignorant are certain, while the wise are filled with doubt. The thing that is certain is that our wage economy is stacked to give all the bargaining power to the employers. They know what all their employees make, and they demand to know how much you currently make and have made in the past when you apply, but they forbid employees from discussing salary amongst themselves and usually do not publish even approximate salaries for filled or open positions. They have a vested interest in keeping you uninformed and lowering your expectations. It's just capitalism. How much will you make? However little you can afford to make.

I haven't watched the video yet, but the title reminds me of something I don't know how to explain. I've always found it - whatever the word is I'm looking for, something negative (not quite useless; perhaps cheesy, corny, etc.) - when people say things like "When you cut your fingernails, those fingernail clippings are YOU and part of who you are! So cut your fingernails with pride yet sorrow."

In the current episode of the podcast Writing Excuses (Season 12, ep 18, Gendered Dialect), common woman-talk carries some self-deprecating elements to it and may not sound authentic without it. That struck me listening to the story of the woman with the "little web designing company". If women earn 80% less than men as entrepreneurs and 83% less as employees, the self-deprecating language (and perhaps the thinking it reinforces) women accept as normal could account for it.

This is what empowerment is. Not entitlement. Not privileges. Not hand outs. Disregard the gender wage gap part in the beginning (she's in a room full of women so she threw it in there to gain their trust; she goes on to say that the wage gap is really self inflicted) Your pay is determined by 3 things: 1) Replacability: How easy is it for the client or employer to replace what you provide for the cost or deal with out it for the time being. 2) Value: The ROI for the client/employer based on what you're paid 3) Negotiation: Know your worth and then ask for it. The strongest negotiation position is the ability to walk away.
@tubewatchingelephant

Edward Chang You seem open to reason. In today's climate that is sadly a compliment. The gender wage gap is as nasty a lie as any lies president Trump has spewed. The fact that you believe she is only saying this because she is in a room full of women (your words) means you believe she lies to these women because she believes that they are stupid. She says something false to grab the attention of stupid women. Well, that makes her as bad, if not worse that an moron peddling a false victim script unwittingly. Either way this prez is garbage. Don't sacrifice your integrity trying to justify dross.

Edward Chang WRONG! While females are evolved to be more agreeable, this does not explain wage gaps in the heavily regulated first world. It is not about women or men being paid differently for the same jobs. Creche workers get paid peanuts. Guess what the gender split is in childcare... clue: it's not even within a sniff of 50/50. Girls do girly and easier work for their gender. Now, let's talk nail bars, how many straight men work in nail bars? If not 50/50 then why oh why are we not spending taxpayers' money to address this dreadful imbalance that threatens our civilization? We must work together on this Edward.

Sigh, the wage gap has been debunked since a long time. Those numbers are just rough medians of the salary averaged over all jobs. The difference only means that women tend to go for lower paying jobs (Oil Field Technician vs Elementary school Teacher for example) compared to men and going for those jobs is their own choice.

+Kebakent Nice try. But this is irrelevant to the discussion. The information I linked to holds things constant across the segment looked at, such as industry or job classification. It's apples and apples so to speak. The chart you cite provides interesting information. But by lumping all sorts of things into one pot you have little to nothing that bears. Teylor mentions Oil Field Tech vs a K-6 teacher. That's perhaps not quite as messy as this chart. This chart would include the lowest wage workers such as a Wallmart greeter with Wall Street traders. We have no clue how it would map to anything else.
