I did away with New Year's Resolutions a long time ago but my conversation with Kofuzi reminds me of why. Sometimes the most lasting life changes are the changes that sneak up on you.

I had a very similar experience. I developed MdDS, something similar to vertigo, which lasted many months. Running started as a therapy to help how wobbly I felt, and then I ran simply because I liked doing it, and to keep me feeling good. Thanks for sharing your story!

I would sometimes hear from others, "how can you like running?" Which explains why Kofuzi said that he likes "running for running ". If you're not a runner, I don't think you would understand that, but I knew exactly what he meant. Running is more than just building up for competition, it's that feeling in the day that makes you want to get out there and not miss out.

Yeah hard to explain, you probably just have to experience it. For me it happened when I learned how to run slow, influenced by Maffetone method, 80-20 and so on. But basically when I started returning from my runs fresh and not tired or even exhausted it opened up a completely new dimension, plus it's easier to observe your surroundings and enjoy the run when you are not at 90%+ maxHR.

Dude this vid hit hard. I was in a bad spot july 22. After miles and miles, I'm in a much better spot. averaging a 5k a day, 10k on the weekend and feel great. Looking forward but never forget where I've been.

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure last year so I ran. I went from 160/110 to 117/65. I ran 400+ miles in 6 months. I am currently taking low dose blood pressure med. Also 2 years of not working out since COVID happened took a toll on me. My gym I go to stopped doing 24 hours due to the pandemic. So I quit my gym membership to started running. I can run anytime, anywhere, and any weather. Saves me time and money.

I totally get the "liking running for the running". I am in my late forties now and ran for many years in my teens and twenties. It fell away until I picked running back up in my thirties. Life got in the way again and here I am, "running for running" and loving it. I started eating far better eighteen months ago and running, resulting in losing four stone in weight and feeling the best I have done in years. Small changes have created vast gains and I'm now in the new normal of eating healthy and running, because I want to through enjoying it.

The food / drink choices is something I definitely relate to. If I might try to get out for a jog before work, have an extra water after dinner. I started jogging because I was bored with how long walking took me. Let me try to jog 1 block, how about 2, etc. But part of my motivation was covid and hearing that folks with higher bmi were having worse outcomes. It gave me the motivation to stick to walking when it was uncomfortable or when (faux kid whining voice) 'I don't wanna'. It was also changing my scenery because I had time back from not commuting. And then, like Kofuzi said, I liked walking / jogging for the act itself. Thank you Kori for this interview series. I'm looking forward to the next one.

So glad for another Kori video. I had a somewhat similar journey last year. In February someone casually mentioned the term green smoothie. I have always struggled to get my greens every day, and meal planning is also difficult, so that sounded like something I should try. And so I did. A few weeks after that, a friend accepted a running challenge, 500 km in 6 months, and to support her I began running one mile a day to see how long I could keep it up. Those quickly locked in as daily habits. Then I added two more - reading every day, and writing every day. And here I am still doing these things every day. It blows my mind how one simple change invites other simple changes along for the journey. Your videos are so great. So much heart. Thank you.

I love the way that you've put this together. I find the diet part the hardest. I know that I want to be better but don't know how and lack the self control. I love listening to Kofuzi as he is so positive and encouraging. Definitely an inspiration for a lot of us.

There is a book by Dan John and Josh Hillis, “Fat Loss Begins on Monday”, that is real cheap on Kindle and has several very good strategies to address food habits. There’s a little bit of corny stuff but it’s actually a super robust and awesome book for your situation.

WONDERFUL!!! I'm so enjoying your channel since I discovered it not so long ago! I hear from people ALL the time "I hate running" and I always explain that I used to too, I used to hate it! I explain that in the beginning I committed to only 10min per day, but EVERY day without fail, without excuses, rain hail or shine. Because we can all find 10min, there's no excuse for not doing 10min... and of course once we're out there, we rarely only do 10min, and that's how I got addicted because chasing those new numbers on my running app became soooo exciting and rewarding, and I felt soooo good about myself!!! Watching running channels like Kofuzi's on youtube also adds a LOT to the addiction!!

Pretty cool to go back and pull up an old Kofuzi video to see the difference! But you're right that he doesn't brag about PR's really, even though he's earned the right to do so. He doesn't even call out his weight loss, which I didn't realize it was nearly 40 lbs! He just does what he does and that's running and taking us along for the journey. In that way, it becomes so much more real for everyone, it's so easy to relate to and not even that hard to emulate. Thanks Kori! Dig the Kori / Kofuzi connection!

Amazing interview on body, health and lifestyle. The million dollar question is, which do we do first, to be healthy or to be fit. Kofuzi did it right. In our journey of getting fit first, we automatically make lifestyle changes. Those changes like making new friends of the same like minded and eating foods which will enhance our next day performance. Health just improved over time because we were compelled to make decisions on good diet over processed foods. Ultimately a new body that fit the lifestyle we want. They just sync. Thanks Kefuzi!

I used to play soccer a lot and running in between before breaking my ankle. And I swear if I spent 3 days in a row without running I would feel almost anxious. So running for running is a thing.

You know what worked for me? I entered a race. I didn't just say "I'm going to get into shape," I gave myself a goal (marathon) that was 10 months out and I knew I had to face that challenge because every day it got closer. I'm 3 months into my training and 10lbs lighter. I look thinner when I see myself in the mirror, I'm sleeping better, getting to bed earlier, don't drink as much alcohol, the training has more or less forced good habits from me. I recommend not just saying "I'm going to start exercising," but enter a race or an event that is several months out. At least try that approach. What do you have to lose (except some weight)?

i gained like 30kg from antidepressant side effect, and at a point i gave up the idea of losing weight, so be it. 2 years ago my doc recc me exercise as part of treatment, so i did with walking at nearby park. as stamina improving (n my mental health too!), my first 1km jog was a big achievement for me! (the last time i jog this distance was more than a decade ago). i keep on going, free of major depressive symptoms since then, now i run almost everyday, n lost that 30kg too ;-)

Almost no one likes running, except runners - it's an acquired taste, just because not running is so much easier. In my experience, the number one reason to not look forward to a run is the inevitable oxygen debt. I guess that applies to most people, especially those that are overweight. Many beginners are not aware of this, don't have realistic goals, don't know they are doing more harm than good by trying to run harder than they can. In January I often see "New Year Resolution" people on the running trail along the beach, trying to get in shape. Or should I rather say, I hear them before I can see them - they breathe so loud and fast. Not surprisingly, they are gone by the end of February, and this is a good thing, because they mostly exercise their hearts. In my book, the most important thing is not to let your heart become the rate-limiting link, not on a regular basis. So for every beginner, the first goal should not be to run X number of miles, but to get past the point where running ends because they are out of breath. This is not easy, takes time, and for some should begin with losing weight and activities other than running. But once achieved, it's like new horizons being opened ahead - you can now run until you run out of fuel, until you run out of time! Only then you can start setting other goals - to run longer, or faster, or both. Running a marathon? Found it easier than expected. I don't look like a long distance runner because of the 15+ years working out with heavy weights. I was supplementing, then tried replacing gym workouts with 3-5 mile runs a few times a week, but didn't enjoy it, until well into my 40s increased the frequency, then the average distance per day, then I realized I could run even longer distances if I have the time. At that point I was running 25-30 miles per week easily and figured doing that distance in one go shouldn't be that difficult. Well it wasn't. If you are running more than 26.2 miles per week, every week, you are probably ready for your first marathon - all it takes is to try doing the weekly miles in fewer and fewer runs, to learn when to take fructose and salt, and to sort other things such as appropriate gear and pacing along the way. I have seen trainers claiming "we will get you ready for marathon in X number of weeks", X being less than 20, and generally don't have a high opinion of them. I have seen them taking and spectacularly failing non-runners, pushing them on a 18-mile run when they couldn't sustainably do more than six at any running pace. Guess finishing and running a marathon can be two very different things, almost like running and racing one.

i was like 97kg and eat alot of junk, i got heart attack 2017 and another one 2020 and now i am on strict diet and i have gone down to 64kg, u can do it, just eat healthy

I had a heart attack at 43, while eating very healthy and exercising regularly, at a healthy weight. I did however work for 11 years on overnights in emergency services. Food/ exercise is usually the main problem with health, but you can't overlook the toll stress and sleep play.

Quick question. What is your eating and drinking regiment for a 1/2 marathon or marathon? People talk incessantly about hydration but I've read that what is more dangerous is hyponatremia or low salt and I think the average human has plenty of fuel to run 26 miles if run at a decent pace. Personally I have run over 20 miles without any food or water and then again I have also bonked during shorter runs or riding a bike.

Hyponutremia is actually rare, while dehydration is extremely common and can cause many health issues, along with a serious slow down. It takes a LOT of water to cause it, with very low salt intake. Having a cup of two of water or sports drink at each aid station will help stay hydrated, but won't put you anywhere near hyponutremia. And while it's possible to run a marathon without drinking or fueling, your performance won't be nearly as good, or your recovery as fast, as if you'd taken some calories and hydration along the way. I had a 6 month stint this spring, it was a misery. 5 months went by trying all the things on RU-vid, and it not only didn't get better, one tip made it so much worse! I finally found a PT who said DON'T put pressure directly on the insertion point on the heel, DON'T do calf drops off stairs, and DON'T stop running completely. Yaaay! 1 month of doing simple calf raises and "toe yoga", rolling out just the arch with a small acupressure ball, and wearing heel lifts from the drug store, and it was gone. Toe yoga: sitting out standing with feet flat on floor, raise just your big toes 10 times while keeping the rest down. You can hold them if you need to. If you get a wicked cramp in your arch, don't worry. Then keeping your big toes down, raise the rest 10 times. Then alternate between big toe and rest of them 10 times. You build strength and flexibility in your feet, and the cramping and PF pain eases quickly. I did it 2-3 times a day. I now do it once a day while driving or watching TV for maintenance. Diet and exercise - Diet being the most important! You can achieve weight lose really easily without drugs, you just need to be motivated enough to get that diet in check :D
