Koi Fish Mermaid - Doll Repaint Tutorial

I see this a lot when artists give themselves challenges & restrictions that often it seems to really improve their work when they go back to their usual way of working. Honestly I used to think your old repaints were as good as it could get but you've outdone yourself & I think this is one of your best yet. The shading is incredible & not overpowering at all & you created a character who is both natural & realistic looking while also being delightfully ethereal & fairy tale like. I'm honestly blown away & it is so inspiring to see even acomplished artists such as yourself continue to improve & amaze. ❤

This doll has to be my favorite so far! Its beautiful!

I absolutely love how this one turned out. I did a series of drawings some years back where I combined mermaids and various wild cats. They had full body markings, claws and cat ears, with some cat like features to the face but retained a humanoid body. I did Lioness, Leopard, Ocelot, White Tiger, Bengal Tiger, and Jaguar. I named them the Wildcats of the Sea. Perhaps you can do something like that? But I also wanted to suggest a Gothic, dragon-like mermaid with horns on her head and spikes and just all around mean and fierce looking. You could use any monster high with abnormal skin color like purple or blue or even black, give her fangs and claws, and just get crazy creative!

It's really beautiful, I adore the natural soft look of the face and outfit. And how you made those flowers- really neat! :D I just wonder if there is a way to make them more durable, without taking away their delicatness. They are very pretty little things so I will experiment with them:) I'm not into repainting, but i just started sculpting with supersculpey- my first doll (more of a figurine I guess) will be a mermaid. I find the painting part most frightening... So I watch and watch how you and other artists paint in hope to learn something :) You and Poppen Atelier are my two very favourites! I love your style and insights about various techniques in each video. Thank you for sharing and inspiration !

She turned out really pretty! Her face is lovely. Love the little flowers you added to her kimono and hair and her tail is especially beautiful! As for future tutorials, I love science fiction/fantasy, like the Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and many others. Thranduil is a favorite character, mostly because I love Lee Pace! I'd love to see him in doll form.

Of all the dolls I've seen you do, I would have to say this one is my most favorite!!👍

i love the hair! i love the tail! i love the face up! the design of the kimono was great but i wish the white wasn't so stark... if it was more cream colored it might have tied in better. all in all, this is great work! so beautiful! can't wait to see what you'll do next!

This is so gorgeous... I think you should try doing some bigger dolls like Dinga does... I would love to see your take on them! I use cheap Kuhrn dolls for more realistic and repaints as they have more normal proportions, there's a lot of Obitsu heads out there too and they're excellent too...but having said that, you really slayed it!

You could start another series of vídeos repainting Monster High dolls in a scarier, darker, more realistic version of themselfs. For example repainting Frankie Stein as a stitched up corpse with some rottening cuts and scars and stitches all over, and Cleo de Nile as an unburied mummy, and so on. I think that would be great!!!

One of the characters I mosty draw is a Koi Mermaid and I planned her to make her into her doll too.

Will any water color pencil work?

I wish you had made the tail using that gauzy fabric and sewed it. Some tacky glue would hold on the glitters and then the tail would be able to come off and would be more durable. Hot glue the seems if you don't want to sew. Late yellows with age and is not very durable. If she falls or is bumped, that latex tail can easily be torn. Then the hours of hard work would be for nothing.

I love this doll it’s so Beautiful it’s a work of art ❤️ one of my favorite touches to this doll is the cherry blossoms I love cherry blossoms their my favorite flower* This doll just reminds me so much of The Big Koi Fish Pond that is surrounded by Cherry Blossom Trees at my Grandparents house in Japan and I can imagine this Doll being it’s Guardian🌸🥰.
