I was hoping to get through Spring with no Parasite issues but when the FISH STARTED FLASHING, it was time to SCRAPE FISH and see what was causing the problems?? 🤔🤔😟.

Mate... I used to do all this... I'll give you the BEST advice someone told me... before the year starts and you turn on the pumps again after the winter hibernation... Salt your pond... TRUST me.. I used to have ALLL these issues ... I haven't had issues for over 5 years NOW (have a 3000 gallon outdoor pond in UK). Since I salt my pond at the beginning of the year, the increase in salt in the water the fish create slime on their skin coating which the a LARGE majority parasites find hard to penetrate through and fall off... also a LARGE majority of Parasites also hate salt water and will die at MUCH lower levels of salt concentration (Hence why people give their NEW additional fish a quick Salt water bath before introducing them to their existing ponds...) as you do pond water changes the salt levels will drop over the summer as the fish become more stronger through general feeding and healthy living in the warm weather

I had a small problem with Ich. I noticed a few fish flashing. I started adding salt to my pond. At the moment the salt meter reads 0.1 not that high of a salt reading but there is salt in the pond. The last few days I have mixed their food with garlic. I soaked their food in the garlic and let it dry. The garlic helps with parasites once the garlic gets in the fishes blood. Today all the flashing stopped after 8 days of treatment and the Ich parasite is gone from them.

Everyone is making a complaint about pond string algae and what a mess Blanket Answer makes. Well those with a pump in the pond it’s a simple thing wrap filter wool round the pump and keep on with a couple of elastic bands none will go through the pump to the filters you simple take the filter wool off every couple of days wash it and put it back on. Bottom sump drain again simple a bathroom or office metal round bin filter wool on the outside stuck on with garden string or wire screw ring or hook in at the top and use a length of wood with bent nail in to position over the drain or sump suction of the water will keep it in place take it out same way hook it with the nail in wood replace filter wool and back down it goes nothing getting through to the filters. Both simple and clean methods of collecting string algae.

I’m not a koi guy, but once you clear your pond of a parasite and don’t make any changes, how do they come back?
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 2 года назад
That is a really good question. Parasites come from a number of sources to the pond. There are are a number of theories how they get into the ponds. The fish themselves carry them dormant and following stress or temp changes can spark the parasite into life. Slugs carry Parasites if they make it to the pond. Birds carry Parasites in the poo should they poo in the pond and so on. 🤔 😉👍

looked like skin fluke to me mate. That was a massive amount of mucus on the 1st scrape, personally id Chloramine T first to thin the mucus out and then treat for fluke, also if you get real thick scrapes like that split it on to 2 slides and ad a drop of pond water, makes it easier to see any parasites

@@KoiPondLifestyle There was a few hooks from dead ones and you can see the hooks of the fluke inside the "mother" fluke too, if it has black dots it's eggs of Gill fluke. I think it's always best to do treat how you would for gill fluke anyway
@GazsKoiPond
@GazsKoiPond 3 года назад
Old out of date test maybe, Do you use salt in your pond water. What I want to know is where do the flukes come from in the fist place. How do you get them in the water, is it that you have introduced them from new fish, or they are somthing added to the pond naturally, if so how how does this happen
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle 3 года назад
Hiya. No I haven't salted my pond. Some say it's it's must and others say 'not in my pond', so I don't believe there is a solid answer to that one.. I hear that parasites can be introduced through things like bird waste or other things like frogs newts etc. Pigeons can carry them and will poo or drink from a pond so transferring them? I've also heard that fish carry them but it's only when the fish is coming out of winter that the parasite takes hold if the vulnerable fish? There's loads of theories in Google that make interesting reading.. Thanks for watching...😉👍👍

So challenging scraping fish that are already stressed out while trying to keep the water at its best to help, then when one parasite has gone another comes along. The UV light kills alot of treatments even though Fluke treatment should be done next day? Other than that there are PH reducers you can get from your local supplier that will do it. If you use that you need to test the water regular so it doesnt swing the oposite diorection.
