What you neglected to mention is soduim thiosulfate neutralises some pond parasite treatments which makes it a pain in the..... if you need to treat. You can't overdose with soduim thiosulfate but in turn you also can't measure how much is in the pond at any one time so a better solution would be to buy a bigger decorator possibly a big blue there are various sizes to choose from, i imagine you only need the smallest of big blues. Maybe giving up some of your precious time to help out at a koi show shadowing the water team would help you more than you may realise.
Great video Andy, really useful. I’ve had problems with flukes twice this year and wondering if this may contribute. I trickle in to the pond via an evolution aqua FC-12 dechlorinator but think I may need to upgrade. I wonder if doubling up on dechlorinators may take that final level down to zero.
Hi Andy🖐. Noticed you used reagent 761 for the test but shouldn’t you be using reagent 711 for the Hanna Total Chlorine ULR? Might be me but think you are using the wrong reagent which is why you might be getting the readings you did🤔. Apologies in advance if I’m wrong😊👍
Hi Phil, thanks for that. I'd have to go off what your telling me as I've never used the a Hanna tester before but didn't see that detail in the destructions.🤔🤔. One to look further into maybe..😉👍
Great vid, It is worth experimenting with flow rates through the your filter, it is easy to push water through too quickly meaning the contact time with the carbon block is too short. Filter cartridges, some of the carts on the market are poor quality, they either are ineffective from the start, or become exhausted quickly. Worth doing a bit of research on HMA cartridges, look at discus retailers/forums for advice. Or go to a specialist water filter supplier who can look at your water quality report and provide a tailored solution for you.
Interesting test results. ST - treat for your body of water, not just what you are topping up, and be mindful that ST also neutralises some treatments. I believe that you can't overdose with ST (?). So if it's not the water company, I wonder what the reasoning is, like others, for the constant flukes?
At this time of year we would like to hear more from you about how KOI are fed and trained to swim, something that all Japanese hobbyists have reported!
First, I love that you used the term “legging it” about the fish swimming away from your net. 😂 It’s a cartoon that needs to happen. Second, I was NOT expecting an underwater net cam! Loved that! I will be trying to catch some baby koi in my pond. They are fast and they are onto me and my net. I hadnt thought of the “slicing” motion with the net. That will be helpful. We have had 4 koi for 3 years And suddenly we had a pond full of little baby fish! Those were all supposed to be male koi so either someone Was misgendered or nature found a way. I wish we could keep them all, they are so cute, but our pond is not large enough for 50(ish) full grown koi, so we are giving them away to good homes.
Hiya, thanks for that great feedback. As I said in the video, slow and steady, catches fish... Sounds like a good idea to move on some fish if your pond won't be able to support that many fish..😉😊👍
I have started getting a reading of 4 on my Hanna meter... This has been seriously interesting mate going to run some deeper tests. I have Sodium Theo crystal as a back up. My concern is heavy metals so I am going to get a new big blue from finch when I get back I think. Absolute testament to your 3 pod though pulling doing what its doing. I am shocked. When you put the scope footage up and I seen the flukes I truly felt for you and the pond... Gutted and I hope you're on top of it fella.
Hiya thanks for that. Yeah the tests really highlighted for me where I need to keep an eye on what water is going in and when it needs a declorinator help. Some have commented on the sodium neutralising some treatments that would be interesting to follow up I think...🤔😊👍
Hey Andy, I don't know if you know but sodium thiosalphate is a chemical stripper not only does it remove chlorine from the water but it actually takes out many chemicals so don't use it when medicating the fish 👍
Been using Sodium Thiosulphate for years has no problem with chlorine small dose midweek then recommended dose after a filter clean wouldn’t bother with the branded de-chlorinator liquid as your paying koi tax on it, Make your own you’ll save a fortune.
Hello mate, bloody flukes. had trouble with them two years back, followed that dutch guys advice on koi wholesale channel by treating two days on the trot, check out the video to get the requirements exactly. done the job brilliantly.
Good to see the results of the test. I use a IBC that fills up and I have air going in then into my top up which seems to work fine but looking at something smaller next year
Hi Andy, mind boggling for me thinking might need a degree in chemistry. I don't have a declorinator as i don't have a trickle in, just top up from the tap after a full filter clean probably around 12 gal, so I've been using TAP no more chlorine and toxins. Must admit not seen any problems 🤞🤞, hopefully stays that way. Can't imagine having to buy one of those test kits or really understanding it all. Your Stokie friend Gwen 🧓
I live in Cornwall and the tap water tastes like mouthwash. I have got over this by only using rainwater in my pond. It has worked wonders, constantly clear water because rainwater is very soft. Not saying I don't get problems. But I know the water is as good as you can get
Hi andy, 👋 Sodium Thiosulphate is great 👍 but it neutralises pp treatment and formalin and malachite green treatments don't works as affective so keep that in mind if treating with these medications not sure about flukes treatments tho just thought I'd add this see if it helps yourself or others, thanks 👊
Absolutely 💯 Joseph. I avoid using any medication if I’ve had sodium Thiosulfate in the pond in the last few days as it’s capable of neutralising many chemicals
You can not overdose with Sodium Sulphate I put 500ml in the pond every 2 weeks and for fluke and other things simple 1lt of Hydrogen Peroxide 3% for every 1000 gallons of water.
Hi m8 if your struggling with flukes try this lernex pro is fine. However you will have far greater success if you thin the mucus layer down first by using chloromine T for two days prior to using fluke treatment. If you get the kh above 5 you can use 15 grams of CT per 1000 gallons of pond volume do this for 2 days. So for example if you have 2000 gallons pond volume do 30g of Ct day one 30g of Ct day 2 then start fluke treatment day 3. You can mix the Ct easily with boiling water and disburse around the pond. Also lernex is a bugger to mix so again. Get a large bucket put at least 2 kettles of boiling water in first then add the amount of lernex required for your pond and use a whisk to mix to a frothy milk then disburse around the pond. If you have a drum filter you will need to bypass it for 48 hours when you use the fluke treatment. And finally with gill flukes you will need to repeat this process for a total of 2 doses and in most cases 3 doses. Also hatching of eggs is temperature dependent, if pond is 10-14 c repeat doses every 10 days, If 14-18 c then repeat every 7 days If above 18 c then every 5 days
Good video Andy 👍 Make sure there are no marks, or fingerprints on the glass vial when you put it in the tester, as it can change the optics the Hanna testers use to get a reading, so you may not get an accurate reading. I always make up my own liquid dechlorinator, using Sodium Thiosulphate. A 1Kg bag will make-up about 7.5 litres, which depending on the size of your pond, will last about 8-12 weeks. You have to put enough in to treat the whole pond, not just what water you have replaced, or about 100ml per 4500 litres/1000 gallons. Hope you're well.
Have you checked for copper in your water the reason I asked I had the same problem it was quite high in my pond and I had to change my declarator to a different type to bonechar
@@KoiPondLifestyle my local coy dealer has a Hannity checks for copper and he does a free check if you ask him so that’s what I took two samples to him one out of my tap and one out my pond the one at my tap was really high. One Me pond was was not so high but was there so I changed the charcoal in my big blue to bone char now I have 0 in my pond
Hi mate, hopefully it's not parasites again, and the goldfish could be stress from all the treatments but more likely just old age like it's owner 😂see you on the 17th mate 👍
Im a big believer in leaving my pond to let it do ots own thing yes clean the filters etc etc but throwing in chemical after chemicals imo your over thinking it and creating your own problems
8:59 Pigmentation is effected by sunlight and diet (protein) I have (or had) an orange fancy fantail in my small 500 Litre nursery pond. I have baby koi in there too and i've been trying to get them to colour up by positioning a mirror next to the pond to increase the light on the pond. Strangely my orange fancy goldfish is loosing its orange and is now almost completely white.
hi mate , i used to breed goldfish and shubunkins etc and they can change colour for a number of reasons. just like with koi, light exposure can have an impact and of course thier diet and thier environment, especially if been any changes. but also water quality and stress can also be a reason. or even just simple as genetics
Ohhhhhh hello, cheers for the mention Andy. Super interesting on parasites mate, I have adjusted my approach over past 2/3 months and seen a great improvement. Increased chlorine days 😢 glad OJ is ok. That Kohaku ❤ I need try these oatcakes 🎉❤ great vid mate
A few years ago I had 4 goldfish in a big tank. All 4 were ‘proper’ deep orange goldfish. Over approximately 12 months 1 of the fish went completely white (we called it Jackson). Absolutely gorgeous pearlescent white scales. All the other fish remained their original orange colour. Never worked out why just that 1 fish changed colour so dramatically.
We're not far from you and we've always had stable pH until recently and it's now testing at 8.5 the fish are not loving it and started jumping. Our tap water tests at 6.5 so we're doing regular water changes to help.
Great stuff. We've done ours as it comes out 24hrs later and now 48hrs. But we've now got 2 in quarantine ones fin rot and the parasites. Look forward to the video.
@KoiPondLifestyle Can you help on some advice about anyone near us that would look at a couple of scrapes? We've ordered a microscope but it's going to be 5 days and we've just lost a fish so very keen to get it done and looked at. We're happy to do the scrape just not sure who would look at it we rang a couple of shops up our way but no luck. Thanks.
Hiya, that's a shame that your local shops won't / can't assist with looking for issues after scrape. I know Peng Koi in Stoke has done that in the past but you have to take the fish in as the scrapes have a short life span to see anything alive in the mucus. Bit of a risk to transport a fish though. Maybe see if he can still do scrapes and mucus views in his shop? He's open Sat and Sundays from 10.
Be interesting to see how the chlorine tests work out - I too have heard that water companies increase their 'pollutants' ready for the weekends, as that's when they expect it's most usage. Myth or not, I always water change midweek, 'just incase' ..
I use filter floss all the time and change it about every three weeks.Does a great job keeping the water crystal clear.A large roll lasts ages and is not expensive.
Totally agree with the season being a tough start. I've had a least 3 bouts of parasites so far and heron attacks posted videos not that many watch 😅 good luck lets hope it a late start and late finish for this year @spk
In autumn I use pearl barley mixed manuka honey and garlic powder. Soak barley in water, us mixture for weeks condition there stomach ready for next year. Good luck
