We are going to select 50.000 4 week old Sanke at the Marudo koi Farm. In this video you will learn how young baby koi are selected and in which way the Japanese Koi breeders decide to select or not select certain Koi.
The Sanke successfully growed to around 3 to 4 cm in size in the last 4 weeks. This is the moment where the first senbetsu can be performed. Senbetsu is the name used in Japan for the selection process of Koi.
Why actually is a breeder selecting his Koi?
The answer is really simple. The breeder doesn’t have enough space to let all Koi develop under the best circumstances. For that reason he needs to select his Koi. Only the ones that have potential in his of her eyes will be selected. Less Koi in the mud pond means better development, better growth and less risk for diseases. And why would the breeder spend time and feed koi that he never will be able to sell to clients? So it makes sense a breeder is only selecting his best Koi.
For these really small Koi, body posture is not the most important factor to select the Koi on. While for larger Koi the body counts for at least 50% during the selection process. For now, since the baby Koi are only 3 to 4 cm in size, body is just a rough indicator. Even the breeder doesn’t exactly know how this will develop in the next upcoming weeks or months.
Selecting baby koi is not something that is extremely difficult
Everyone is able to learn the aspects where you have to select the Koi on. The difficult is that each variety of Koi has their own selection process. Kohaku for example, white Koi with a red pattern are selected differently than Showa which are black koi with a white and red pattern on it.
There is only one good way to learn and understand how to select baby koi properly, and that is sharing time together with the breeders. Not just for a single day, but for periods of time, selecting different varieties, asking questions to the breeders, and trying it by yourself.
Sanke selection
For Sanke selection, Koi with a white skin and a red and black pattern. Every potential small baby koi that does have some kind of pattern is selected. In the first round it doesn’t really matter at all, as long as a pattern is visible and the Koi is complete and healthy. With complete I mean having two eyes, a pectoral fins, a tail, and so on.
Kohaku selection
Also for Kohaku selection, pattern is the most important thing to take into account. It is all about the technical aspects of the pattern. Some basic technical aspects are for example that the red pattern does not cover the entire head, and at at the time the head should not be entirely white. The nose should be white, and there should be white visible around the head. Preferable the red pattern lays between the eyes. The last part of the body, just before the tail, should be white as well. Fins should not be covered in red colour, including the tail and dorsal fin.
That doesn’t mean if one of the baby koi does not match these criteria that they won’t be selected. For the first rounds it is ok if not everything is not 100% matching the technical aspects

Im just a fish keeper and Im like the breeders when it comes to picking koi, hunched over a bunch of koi and picking out potential individuals that will bring me joy and peace as part of the family. I always ask for a net and a couple of basins just to pick the koi I want, sometimes at 20 at a time and only picking 4 or 5 as my pets. I always look at pattern, body composition, proportions if need be, and how well they swim.

What happens to the baby koi that are not selected in the first round? , Are they destroyed , or sold as feeders or in bulk to people who may want to purchase them? And in which months do they normally start the selection process after breeding.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 года назад
Hi, that perhaps is a little bit sad to hear. But as you mentioned they are 'destroyed' in the first round. Many will become fishmeal. The month of selection is depending on the breeding date. For Gosanke (Kohaku, Showa, Sanke) first selection round is after around 4 weeks. First selection can take place in around June for early breeding or even end of september for late breeding in August.

Others will completely discard the ones that were not selected. So after all it all depends on the breeder itself.

@@MageGriff I have to agree it is a little bit sad indeed. On the other hand, the breeder will never be able to grow hundreds of thousands baby koi to larger Koi. Insufficient space and bad conditions for all these Koi to grow in would probably be even more sad. Thank you, glad to hear you enjoyed the video!

That depends on the breeder. Some breeders do take these apart and grow them up a little bit more to around 8-12 cm. They will be sold then during winter time to customers all around the world as lower quality and cheaper Koi. It depends on the breeder. Some breeders take them apart and they are being sold during the winter period. Usually they range in sizes from around 7 to 10 cm. They are sold as low quality Koi. For other breeders that can be different, they indeed discard them completely. It all depends on the breeder and the available space the breeder has available.

@@Aboutkoi It does thank you. I live in North Carolina in the US. We have Blue Ridge Koi semi locally, They are a pretty large supplier. I keep trying to guess who the chain petstores order their fish from. Its not like important or anything, just something to know. I could see if you were gonna grow out some that you plan on selling for decent money when they are bigger and sending the less choice fish to a big chain to be sold for 8.00 a pop.

So they are expensive because of the amount of time and effort it takes to select them... making them expensive?
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 года назад
Basically, yes. Also because of the scarcity. Only a few out of the hundred thousands of baby Koi wil be of good quality. So a lot of work and effort, for just a few Koi. All costs made for the farm have to be divided over that few amount of Koi.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 года назад
@Kelvynn Lee That is true as well! The more ask, the higher the price. The breeder must have a least a few good Koi though. Small Koi that are not selected in this video are not so likely to be sold for any price.
