Who loved ya baby? Telly Savalas was what the show was all about. It survived on his sheer charisma. Kojak broke rules, regulations and crossed jurisdictions in every episode. To say that it was not based on reality is like saying Cannon over-ate on occasion!

Back in 2005, they tried a remade series of Kojak, but with Ving Rhames as Theo Kojak. It flopped big time.

Kojak was really special, but also perfectly encapsulates its time, that 70s New York on the verge of bankruptcy, the streets choked with huge cars, the cultural mix. It was damned near a perfect show, you just can't remake that. Like Hill Street Blues.

My 87 year old grandpa loved Telly and his role as Kojak. Grandpa usually hit the sack around 8-8:30pm and got up at 5am every morning. But when Kojak was on, I think Sunday nights, Gramps stayed up late, sat in his favorite chair and stayed glued to that show.

I never want to see a remake. The original Kojak is absolutely perfect. I was born in the early 60s and grew up watching all those fantastic 70s cop shows. Cannon, Kojak, Ironside, Rockford, Petrocelli (remember that one?), Columbo. Great memories and even better themes.

Yes agreed... the shows in the 60s and 70s and until say up to the 90s were great. The 00s were OK. Early 2010s is when it all started "Woking up" and neo-politics came into shows....

@@ricksantos1580 The same BS here in Germany. The villain is an affluent native German man, the victim is an immigrant and the detective is probably a lesbian woman. Very few watch, but it doesn´t matter as the fee for the German state TV is compulsory. Lately I rewatched all "Booker" sequels on video. Great entertainment!

Grew up watching this as a kid. My dad was a fan and still is. I miss 70s and 80s television. Kojak. Streets of San Francisco. Starsky & Hutch. Baretta. Omg, best times ever!!

On this day in 1973 {October 24th} the detective series "Kojak" debut on the CBS-TV network... The show ran from 1973 to 1978 with a total of 118 episodes... Telly Savalas won a Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for 'Best Actor - Drama'... After the series ended, between 1985 and 1990 seven 'Kojak' made for TV movies aired on CBS-TV... R.I.P. Mr. Savalas {1922 - 1994}, Dan 'Capt. Frank McNeil' Frazer {1921 - 2011}, and George 'Detective Stavros' Savalas {1924 - 1985}...

70 and 80: the T.V. of today NEVER will can match this inmortal series with full actions, drama, tricks, jumps and all real stunts without computers and digital efects seating in a office; I am waiting yet the return of these wonderfull decades!.

That was one cool dude.... An actor who was used to playing heavy villains brought that same dark side to create an anti-hero that was one for the ages... His Kojak and the theme is pure 70's cool...Immortal. He is long gone, and we miss him but his style of tough, smart guy will never be forgotten.

😲 Oh wow, just hearing this theme song takes me back to when I was 9 years old and of course I enjoyed watching kojak too. The other one I enjoyed watching as well back then too, Charlie Chan as well. Nowadays, it's hard to find timeless stuff like this on television to watch. It's a shame they don't play stuff like this no more

I had a manager that used to go to Roosevelt park and Telly was there all the time playing the ponies. He was a regular guy anyone could talk to.

Awesome theme song and creative opening. That cool transition from building strips to the name KOJAK has been the one thing standing out the most in my memory through the years about this series.

Out of all the openings for Kojak, this theme song was the best one in my opinion. RIP 🙏 to Telly and George Savalas (brothers), Kevin Dobson, Dan Frazier, Roger Robinson, and Vince Conti who have all passed away and were all part of this great detective show from back in the day.

I think it still is !! XD I did not see the construction of the original WTC in the opening credits .. That was the a major happing in NYC..In the early 70's..XD

Loved this show when I was a kid and would love this entire series on Dvd. One of my favourite episodes was How Cruel The Frost How Bright The Stars which was a Christmas episode from 1975 which showed what Christmas was like back in the 70s instead of the so festive season of the 21st century.

Yes, but they are mostly second-unit establishing shots. The majority of scenes were actually filmed in Hollywood.

Kojak was 1970s New York. Remaking it in any form is pointless. Abraham Beame and John Lindsay are gone and so is Kojak. Leave it alone.

In 2005 they tried a remake with Ving Rhames as Kojak. I like Ving Rhames in other films, but there could only be one Kojak and that was Telly Savalas. The new Kojak only lasted 9 episodes. Even my dad who watches the original with me in the early 70s when I was a kid couldn't stand it. He likes Ving Rhames too, but not as Kojak. And no way in hell you can replace 1970s NY!!

Some people think that Telly only played himself. But if you look at what he did with Blofeld, nothing but his face is the same as Kojak. He really was a good actor.

I could not agree with you more. "Stavros!" and "Crocker!" were the phrases Lt. Theo Kojak would say on the show during each episode. I truly enjoyed "Kojak" on television during the 1970's.

I m 52, from Romania, and in 1970 the Ceausescu's Communist regime was broadcasting this movie on TV (on bw tv sets of course). Other western series that we had: The Saint, Mannix, The Persuaders, Forsyte Saga, Onedin Line, Long hot summer, Invaders, Rich man poor man, Dallas, Cannon, Toma, Columbo, Daktari, Flipper, Fireball XLFive, Gentle Ben, Dennis the menace, Lost in space, Planet of giants....etc etc......

I love Kojak. Great show, great stories. When cops were cops. Cannon etc Doing it. Yes it's TV, but great TV.

On the titles themselves the 1st ,2nd and 4th image shots of Telly was from the pilot 'The Marcus Nelson Murders' and the 3rd image shot was from Season 1 Episode 3 'One For The Morgue' that got used.
