Cross returns to Koksijde in a couple days time and with that in mind I thought I'd revisit and rework the first video I made here, a short look back at the Koksijde 1994 World Championships. One of the best remembered crosses of the last 30 years, the exploits and Herygers and Groenendaal deserve a quality look back.

Great stuff... these videos about the history of Cross are fascinating. I've been following the sport seriously for about 5 years and am hooked. My girlfriend bought me "Rainbows in the Mud" by Paul Maunder which is a bit old now (published 2017) but covers everything I've missed. There are references to that Koksijde win... Cheers

agree that it really is one of (if not the best) course every year. It's great in the dry or the wet, in the heat or the cold.

Nice vid. Thanks. Love to hear about these formative origin stories for the cyclocross discipline. I've been following it closely for a handful of years only so it's great to get "a history lesson" now and again!

this is great, i've only been following CX for about 4 years so dont have any knowledge of the time before that, but i have been watching your previous videos to get an idea.

Enjoyed this. Really complements the other videos you've done focusing on the legends of the sport. Also good having a video about a particular race when it's coming up on the calendar.

Great video! Historical CX videos in the English language are tricky to find. Really enjoy your work.

Sad part of the story, the public was very horrible back then... they would scandalize others and trow beer on them ,call them names of even try to pull them of their bikes. I am glad it changed a lot

This was excellent - and what a ride! Psychology always massively underrated in terms of its significance - so good to see it winning a race. I agree that a sport dominated by one country isn’t ideal - but if it wasn’t for the interest and finance from Belgium, some road teams and the incredible talent emerging on the womens side - mostly due to Dutch cycling culture CX would barely exist. You only need to look at the feeble turn out at Worlds in the USA to see that years of CX world cups there - or anywhere outside Europe wont translate into viewing figures. GCN has revolutionised coverage - though I do miss long searches through RU-vid to find races with Belgian and Dutch commentary - and more coverage will equal more interest. Cycling is still niche in the UK, CX even more so and the cost is making it a preserve of the wealthy- kit, transport, bikes etc. By comparison Football, Rugby Netball Athletics Skateboarding BMX are cheaper, don’t rely on parents or understanding what can seem a pretty bizarre and weird sport - unless you live in Belgium. PS Keep up the good work and if you do a series on iconic courses - include Bradfords Peel Park.

Excellent, thanks! I love cross, but it needs more international attention again indeed. I'm glad Pidcock is there, and Kuhn... And as for the female drivers, it seems no one can match The Netherlands... I hope the sport grows again, with some touches of Belgian glory of course in between ;). Nevertheless great effort, going to work at Koksijde tomorrow to make things cosy for fans going to watch. PS: maybe do something special about Diegem (first nightcross)? Keep up the good content, really enjoyed it!

Certainly understanding the transition from Belgianification to Internationalization would be a very entertaining narrative.

Significant? Very possibly......However, I think 1996 when MTB became Olympic, and the top Swiss, Italian & French CX riders moved there, and away from CX. And still the case today.

And why are the dutch female so dominant nowadays?

Sorry but I don't like the way Herijgers insults his opponent during the race and show a disturbing way of celebrate his victory. Sport without respect is useless

Agreed. Any other team sport and that guy is getting smashed in the mouth in the very near future.
