The marriage hall at this exquisite Shiva temple is one of the most remarkable I've ever seen, with beautifully carved granite columns. The best part, however, is the floor of the hall, and one can easily imagine a 700-year-old Hindu marriage ceremony taking place, complete with fire in the centre.
The original temple apparently dates back to the Chola dynasty - one of the longest ever in world history (300 BC - 1279 AD) - but the architecture seen today is clearly in the Dravidian style of the Vijayanagara Empire, and would date to the early 14th Century.
A huge gopuram stands at the main entrance, and can be seen across the relatively small town of Kolar. In the centre, the main temple is lined with, again, some of the most ornately carved columns of any Vijayanagara-era maha mandapa. Only the temples of Hampi - the capital of the empire - can boast such detailed carvings as these or, should I say, of the temples I've seen across Karnataka.

Thank you! Although I talk on many videos, the plan is, generally, to "go for a walk" in any place and the viewer join me if they so wish! And you are correct about trying to obtain the ambience of some places without interference, except the noises my camera makes!

Thanks for sharing this Amazing place with us Why is the central floor an unfinished surface ?

There is no particular reason other than a sacred fire (Agni) is lit in the centre during the marriage ceremony. The bride and groom sit in front of the fire to give oaths to each other and, later, walk around this fire during another ritual. A rough floor is better for the purposes of a fire, but also - one would think - this ensures the couple don't slip over on a smoothly polished surface. As you probably know, polished granite can be like walking on ice. That would certainly ruin the wedding and, more importantly, greatly embarrass the bride, or even burn her sari. Worse still, she might even fall into the fire. I am sure many a Hindu woman would dream of emulating the feats of Sita Devi, but to undergo Agni Pariksha might not be the best way to celebrate your wedding.
