An adult Komodo dragon can grow to 300 pounds and three and a half meters. They’re scary, and have been known to kill humans. But this is good news for the dragons, because interest in their man-eating credentials has made them a compelling ecotourist attraction and kept them from extinction.
Sailing in the Komodo National Park is not without its challenges. Apart from man-eating dragons, there are fierce, unnavigable currents running between the islands. But maybe that isn’t such a bad thing? In the old days, dragons were able to swim between islands, but not any more. And no-one wants to run into a dragon when snorkelling!

Watching this video is as close to a Komodo dragon I care to be. The musical score and voice-over were brilliant. Thanks for supporting the national park and sharing. 🐲 The anchorage and drone footage. 👏👏👏

What a privilege to visit such an amazing and unique place. We sail because its part of the adventure visiting and exploring are what adventure is all about for us. To pass by and not explore is not to have been at all. Interesting your comment about agenda. We are spending more and more time on our boat now. More and more we find ourselves creating a route and program to bring some structure to our travels. Its a tricky balance. 😬

Nice words, I agree. Our filming and photography helps to bring structure to our lives, but unless you've lived this kind of life it's difficult for most people to understand. Cheers! 🙏👍⛵ Liz

As a young kiwi that grew up in Indonesia I am totally in awe of you at the moment. I visited the island in the 1970s - 80s and it was spectacular then. Awesome episode and great to see you enjoying one of my favourite parts of the world. As for the other cruisers that refuse to pay a few bucks, well hopefully they find foul winds and steep waves on the way to their next destination. Unbelievable attitude of some tourists.

Some great footage there. Those dragons are just so intimidating. But Komodo isn't just dragons, the clear water, fish life and snorkeling are also superb. one could spend weeks there on your own yacht. Thankyou Liz and Jamie. Ps I sent an email the other day.

Worriers anticipate the problems and live a safer life. Unfortunately we oft can not stop worrying and this can be a problem. I know, I am one of those. I do try to tell my self to stop worrying unnecessarily but usually fail.
@followtheboat

I inherited worrying from my mum. As she got older her anxiety increased. I'm hoping that by identifying it I can lose its hold over me. Letting go and realising you can't control everything in your life, is another step on the road to serenity. 🙏 Liz

Great episode! It took me a dense second to figure out the need for the elevated walkways! "Oh, of course!" Q.: why do Komodo dragons no longer swim between the islands? (From your description.) Is it environmental or genetic? Best regards as always.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 7 месяцев назад
I think they no longer migrate between the islands because of the currents. They probably started living there before the islands were formed and got stranded. I don't know, I'm just making it up! 😁 Even looking down from the walkways was scary, they looked to me like they could climb... 😳 Liz
