Kona: the Smallest Biggest Bike Company in the World

Rider-owned. What mountain bike company isn’t owned by riders? Who else but a rider would have the fiscal patience and insensitivity to risk required to own a mountain bike company? Yet there are brands so strongly defined by their founders that it usually turns out they sacrificed nearly every other thing in their lives for bikes. They’re the type who possess a devotion to riding that is so deeply ingrained that founding a brand seems pre-ordained.
So what the hell does ‘the smallest biggest bike company in the world’ mean anyway?
Kona is a quintessential North Shore bike brand, yet their head office has almost always been over the border in Bellingham, Washington, a logging and mining town that is becoming increasingly well-known for its riding. We were long overdue to pay them a visit, so we drove an hour South and found ourselves in the town of 80,000. Partly to ride their trails, of course, but we also wanted to learn more about Kona and how they have managed success without losing the unique flavour that has always defined them.
*Originally aired October, 2015. Read the rest of the story - and see all the photos - on NSMB.com: nsmb.com/artic...
Shot on location at Kona HQ in Ferndale, WA and on the trails in and around Bellingham.

Big fan of Kona here! I bought my Kona Blast in Kyiv back in 2007 (or was it 2008?). I love riding it in forests, doing cross-country, and pretty much going everywhere with it. I've made a couple of mods over the years and still enjoy this bike a lot. Cheers from Ukraine! 🇺🇦

My first "real mtn bike" was a 2017 Kona Mahuna that my boss sold to me for $50.00. I needed transportation to work he did me a huge favor by not only basically giving me a nearly new bike, but totally converted me to a brand I had heretofore never heard of. He rides Scott stuff and the Kona was a bit big for him but just right for me. I had to sell that bike a few years back but I will definitely be getting a new Mahuna at some point when I return from Romania.

My first proper full suspension was a brand new Kona Stinky 2008, my mate was riding an 06 Stab Supreme at the time and we used to ride them 15 or so miles every weekend to the trails (they weren’t very good on the road), we had a blast. Kona will always have a place in my heart.

Proud 2 week old owner of a 2nd hand but heavily upgraded Kona Entourage 2014, Fox 40s on front instead of Rock Shox Domain, & a pretty much brand new Fox DHX RC4 instead of RC2, bought for $1k NZD, STOKED! I LOVE the bike, the geometry, with shorter chainstays makes popping off curbs & jumps, & turning so easy, & the 180mm travel instead of 200mm means i can still pedal on the flat & a little uphill too. It's my first mtb in 10 years after i lived in Melbourne for 7 years, but now I'm back in Christchurch NZ & I'm so spoilt for epic Downhill & park tracks to ride.. Cant wait! First I've gotta get my fitness back up before i can huck it though haha! Super stoked that Kona still has that "small Co run by a group of mates who love bikes" spirit, complete with 4 legged factory supervisors (lol) makes me even more stoked for my new bike, as does the blunt wraps even though i don't smoke anymore haha! ;)

Never imagined I'd spend more than $500 on a bicycle, but saw the Kona Coco in my local bike shop ($950ish Canadian) and fell in love with it. It rides SO smooth, I didn't even know what hit me. It completely changed how I saw the cruiser bike category. Can't wait to ride it!!

My life changed when i found a specialized p2 in 2011 at the local bike shop here in the middle of Alaska, i absolutely had to have that bike, idr if it was 2010 or 2011 model, but one of my regrets in life is the selling of it, i have been trying to find one like it ever since but unfortunately i have had to settle with a couple more p bikes, and i will not be selling any more p bikes lol

I remember that poster of Joe and Bruce from way back. It was in my closet. Haha...don't read into that. Bike clothes closet I mean. I had a ClimbMax at the time, and I thought they were golden gods. Then I met Bruce and his girlfriend at a race in Tsawassen and realized he was easy going and cool. His lady was selling bike chain jewelry and gave me an idea to repurpose an old Dura Ace rear derailleur into a chain bracelet. I still have it. Nice memories.

I bought a Kona Lave Dome in 1990 for £450. I still have the receipt (somewhere). It was stolen from the boat house under Barnes Bridge (River Thames - London) where I used to row, tho I still have the seat and seat post! I replaced this with the higher spec'd Kona Cindercone (splash paint version) which I still own and ride to this day. Both bikes had straight Project 2 forks which were revolutionary for the time. Prior to buying the Kona, I'd been riding off road bikes with modified MX parts and knobbly tyres since the 1970's, which was well before Californians claim to have invented the sport. I even took one down the 'big bank' at the legendary Hawkstone Park GP MX circuit in Shropshire. So to see bikes come along 15 years later spec'd for off road riding was a real treat. These days those specs are even better. Kona played a big part in the evolution of mountain biking and it's great to see them still gong strong..........

Just bought my first mountain bike from my brother in law, Kona Big Kahuna . . . So far I’ve enjoyed riding it. What would be the next level up? Or modifications I can make to upgrade.
@peteroggeman
@peteroggeman 2 года назад
Welcome to MTB, Eric! Congrats on the Big Kahuna. It's a great package overall. Upgrades/level up will really depend on what kind of riding you're doing and where but my biggest piece of advice would be to find a local bike shop you like and put yourself in their hands a little bit. Tires are always super important and the performance to value ratio of the right tires is about as high as it gets. If you're unsure about what you should/could be running, the folks at the bike shop will be able to help (they'll also help you figure out which trails to ride if you need advice). After tires, make sure you know how to do basic repairs (change a flat, adjust a derailleur, fix a broken chain, bolt-checks) and pick up the tools you need to make adjustments while riding or at home (multi-tool, lube, spare tube or two, tire levers, portable pump, floor pump for home, chain breaker and spare links, grease...it's a long list but again, the shop will run you through what you need right away and what can wait. Good luck! -Pete from NSMB
@ericd7361
@ericd7361 2 года назад
@@peteroggeman thanks for the reply Pete. I found a local bike shop that I plan on using. The 2 things I really wanted to “upgrade”, going with a 1 by (not sure if that’s exactly what you call it) and then go tubeless. Not sure if these 2 things are standard when it comes to upgrading (if that makes sense at all). I’ve been using all trails app to find different places to ride, so far w good results.
@peteroggeman
@peteroggeman 2 года назад
@@ericd7361 those are solid upgrade ideas. Tubeless will make a much larger performance difference. 1by (you got it right) is great but won't impact your riding performance or enjoy.ent nearly as much. If you can do it cheaply, go for it, otherwise I'd use the money for better brakes (and non-resin pads as well as upgraded rotors) and/or hold some back for a rainy day because as you ride more, you'll probably break something or rrwkxe your saddle is uncomfortable or your fork needs to be serviced.

@@idropcorpsez2709 Either a Fire Mountain which is a 27.5 or the Lava Dome which is a 29er. The 29er gives you a better rolling rotation and will roll over obstacles easier where to as the 27.5 gives you more play in the bike, is more aggressive and better through technical sections on the trail. A lot of people though are trending towards the 29ers. It's really just personal preference.
