What do you think about my thoughts about the e commerce fight and the race to the bottom with price wars. They are full of inventory with no demand right now
@cup_and_cone
@cup_and_cone 5 месяцев назад
A market correction is desperately needed. A Dura Ace groupset should not be $4500 USD. A Far East made frame like the SL8 should not be $5500. A single tire should not be $300 because it's a special edition (Corsa Pro Gold).
@Sweetskis
@Sweetskis 5 месяцев назад
Something that may help e commerce move their inventory is the high price that people paid for bikes during Covid is inflating the asking price of used bikes. If manufacturers will support the discounting and close the new/used delta, people will spring for a new bike.

For almost a year I've been looking for desirable bikes in my price range, $2,000 and less. Canyon says coming soon and they give a date but months past their given date and they have a new date weeks or months in the future. They do not want to sell $2,000 dollar bikes. They want to sell $4,500 bikes and above. It is an upsell technique. Let's look at the Trek Domane Gen 4 right now. I have not looked for awhile. Domane AL 2 Rim YES all sizes and they are on sale $300 dollars off $999.99 but the buyers of this bike cannot be upsold. Domane AL 2 Gen 4 NO except one size only. Anyone else will have to buy higher. Domane AL 3 gen 4 no listing gen 3 one size 44cm Domane AL 4 gen 4 NO none available in any color. Domane AL 5 gen 4 No none available in any color. If someone can afford $1999.99 for an AL 5 gen 4 they can come up with the money to buy a Domane SL 5 gen 4 for $3,499.99 is their thinking. Domane SL 5 gen 4 YES all colors and all sizes except one, Matte Deep Smoke in 54 cm. And it is the same in half a dozen other bike companies I have looked at. It is not that the low end market is collapsing, it is because their is no stock. I was able to buy a Trek Domane AL 5 gen 4 after months of trying even though there was never any stock listed on the web site because I told the store owner that I will not be upsold and that I will cancel my order and demand a refund on my deposit. I had my Trek Domane AL 5 gen 4 in less than two weeks after that. The Domane AL 4 & 5 would be great sellers if there was stock to sell. They are just playing a bait and switch game with the public. That is the way I see it.

In 2020, I walked into a bike shop looking for a new gravel bike. I found a Specialized Diverge Comp, for $2500 in size 56cm at my local shop. Aluminum frame with a Sram APEX 1x drivetrain. I couldn't believe an aluminum frame bike with ONE SHIFTER AND ONE DERAILLEUR and heavy, house-branded parts was going for the price of a really nice carbon road racing bike from the previous few seasons. I refused to buy. Rode my Trek Domane 2.1 which had 2x10 105 groupset, carbon post, fork and wheels, and weighs UNDER 17 pounds for the next 3 seasons. I waited 3 more years before I found a bike on sale at the end of 2022, early 2023, which was a full carbon Orbea race bike with Sram Force AXS 2x groupset, discounted from $4699 to $2998. Put it on layaway and thought long and hard about it before cancelling the sale 30 days later and taking a full refund. $3000 for a road bike seemed a little ridiculous to me, even though as an avid cyclist I've never bought a bike for more than $1200. A road bike might be light and might be made of carbon, but who the hell thinks in REALITY (where I try to live MOST OF THE TIME), a road bike (TWO TRIANGLES, always has been always will be) should cost as much as a motorcycle? A comparable mountain bike with SHOCKS, SUSPENSION FORKS, DROPPER POSTS, EXTRA MATERIALS AND ENGINEERING costs WAY LESS!? Two weeks ago I finally pulled the trigger on a Canyon Spectrail with FOX 36 FLOAT and FOX EVOL rear shock, Full Shimano Deore groupset, Dropper Post, Race Face Rims and Maxxis Tires, on sale for $1899 plus tax and shipping. Best decision I ever made, and the bike is ACTUALLY WORTH IT. I'm done with these bike companies gorging themselves on the consumer and BLAMING the consumer for their "willingness to pay" Screw them all.

Prices have g😮otten ridiculous. Back in the day, an all Ultegra road bike was doable for most people who wanted a serious bike. Around the year 2000, the cost of a full ultegra bike was 1500. Now, average salaries have not kept up with the crazy prices big names are asking for. Now the bubble has burst and manufacturers will need to adapt. Typical fuck around and find out situation for cycling industry. At the same time - all the managers/CEOs of large bike brands who thought that the demand from covid times would last indefinitely simply lack common sense and should not be CEOs in the first place.
@Sweetskis
@Sweetskis 5 месяцев назад
The CEO’s knew 2020/21/22 sales levels wouldn’t last forever BUT if they say that to the private equity or board that represents the shareholders they will be fired. They are expected to deliver growth EVERY YEAR in order to get paid their bonuses and that means have the sales reps pack the retailers to the gills with product even if it means the retailers and the brand will be bankrupt in a couple years. The CEO’s don’t care. They’ll hit their bonuses, resign, and be on to the next company. Investors don’t want to hear a CEO say, “I’m going to manage down our production and sales so that we are still alive in 5 years and then we can explore a growth strategy when other brands have exited the market”. Investors want their return NOW.

@@bonbonflippers4298 Pretty much every employee below the C-Suite are also victims to some degree. Middle management can see these things coming too and have to decide if they are going to find a new job or ride it out. I’ve been there and had to change industries. The private equity and boards of directors have EBITA or share price expectations and will hire CEOs that deliver them, for better or worse. Sometimes they hire a growth and vision CEO and everyone is happy. Sometimes, in private equity particularly, a strip it and flip it CEO is hired on the tail end of a period of growth to get the company as lean as possible so the sale price is maximized. After that happens, it’s a tough road to rebuild and grow.
@Sweetskis
@Sweetskis 5 месяцев назад

@dangurtler7177 5 месяцев назад
@@Sweetskis One correction, while BoDs in public companies are elected by the shareholders, it isn't really an election with multiple choices. The CEO or the Chair of the BoD nominate the people to be members of the board. So the BoD is beholden to the management or in some cases to a major shareholder that control less than 20% of the shares. You only get to vote "yes" or "no" on the nominees. It is the same for the auditor, one is proposed by management and then approved by the shareholders. If you don't like the auditor, it is best to sell your shares. I generally look at who is doing the auditing before buying shares; but even the big accounting houses have presided over frauds like World Com and Enron. The auditor has to walk a tight line between doing a proper job and not being fired by management; so there is always a bit of a conflict of interest with the audit process.

I think they got into a little trouble with some very high-end e-bikes that took a very long time to sell, but have since diversified their offerings. Service is about half their business as they will work on any brand, and will work on the mechanical components of any ebike they don’t sell, unlike many bike shops, who refuse to even touch e-bike brands they don’t sell, even if it has nothing to do with the electrical systems.

true but bikes still have R&D, engineering, tooling, and marketing. There was a podcast a few weeks ago with the founder/owner of Factor bikes. Several hundred dollars right off the top of each bike go to support professional racing. I think that's crazy but companies wouldn't do it if the effect wasn't tangible in consumer sales. Heavy tech items with lots of R&D and going to generate a lot of overhead. High end bikes just don't have the quantiles being sold to absorb all that overhead. My guess is brands found out a long time ago that nobody is willing to settle for outdated tech no matter the savings because if consumers were willing to accept less for savings some brands would dip their toe into that pool. You can get a carbon road bike with electronic shifting for $4,000-$4,500 which I don't think is that awful. Electronic shifting costs more, disk brakes cost more, so you are never going to truly roll prices back to rim break, wired shifting. If there was still demand for wired shifting and rim brakes manufactures would still be pumping them out. A lot of the complaining is about the ultra high end bikes. I don't think pricing is that crazy in the $3,800-$4,500 range give the advanced in tech. The best deals seem to be found by researching LBS's with online inventory and finding something they are trying to unload that is a year or two old.

I dont think this is the end of the bike industry, but I think it is the end of the traditional method of how the bike industry has existed. Anyone can now easily buy bikes and parts directly without having to go to a bike shop, and many times those bikes and parts will be on average cheaper (canyon, ventum, van rysel, etc.) than bikes that you can only buy new through a bike shop. No bike shop can compete with how much cheaper a top spec canyon vs a top spec trek or bmc, and I think @Mapdec on youtube is the first to where the bike industry is going to go. His shop is based around the fact that everyone is sourcing parts themselves, he is just there to do the custom building and maintenance of the bikes themselves, and in my opinion this is where everyone is going to go. I own 3 bmc bikes, love them all, but I noticed that what once was a bike shop exclusive, you can now buy any spare part/component bmc produces directly from their website without having to go through a bike shop. All bike prices can most likely drop 20-30% if they went direct to consumer minimum, and if all bike shops convert to bike maintenance shops vs shops that are selling bikes, things would start to normalize.

I think here in Australia supply chain delays are killing the industry. In my recent experience I purchased a new bike, which was readily available, However, I needed to change the stem and handlebars and the crank size. It's now three months and still waiting for these parts to still turn up. When paying top $ for a bike with top tier componentry to get dicked around over these issues is a total put off. It is literally make the sport of cycling so finicky and so hard to pursue that it's easier to bail out of the sport altogether. The big cycling companies need to take note that instead of focusing on moving their crap stock , they should focus more on maintaining their market share

Having said that, the product offerings and prices are ludicrous. A high end road/endurance bile shouldn’t require me to buy more batteries, complexity and weight. I live in CO. Its dry. I dont need the weight, complexity and less comfortable frame that comes with it. Looking at adjusting MAP for a retailer and buyer is a necessary way to get balance back but it will just drive more of the smaller retailers out of business because they cant chase to the bottom. But as more of these retailers blow out inventory way below MAP because they close shop, buyers are just stocking up for the future and squashing any demand. Buyers and manufactures make out, retailers get absolutely screwed and its just another step towards more B2C.

I am six feet four inches tall. Ok, at my age, maybe I've shrunk a little. In 1979, at the age of 22, I had a custom frame built. Columbus SP italian tubing. 66cm, if I recall. Bright Metallic Blue Dupont Imron paint. She was a beauty. Cost was $325 total. Campagnolo headset included Slowly, I built it up, over two years or so, as I could afford it. A crankset here, some new wheels there, and eventually I had a complete bike that was well tuned in. At first. I just transferred a lot of parts from my old Gitane, just to get on the road. But when she was fully built up, what a machine. At the age of 67, I STILL HAVE THAT BIKE! It has never been crashed, never bent. Not even scratched. It has a real hodgepodge of equipment; Campagnolo front derailleur, Shimano brakes, can't remember who 7cog freewheel, etc. I love that machine. More than anything I own. Unfortunately my bike riding hobby ended 4 years ago due to a dissected aorta. If you don't know what that is, just know that it is bad, and you don't want it. So at the age now of 67, my riding days are over. And eventually I will sell the bike. I'll probably end up selling it for around $1500-$1800. FOR THE WHOLE BIKE!!! My point is this: I don't even recognize most of the companies involved in making bikes and components now. All this supposed "high tech" crap is just that. Electronic shifting? disk brakes? If you can't reach down and find the lever on the down tube to change a cog, your lazy ass does not deserve a derailleur bike. If a set of Campy or Shimano brakes (you know, with rubber blocks that run against the rim), are not good enough for you, well then I would have to say you've lost the whole point of the sport. Feeling the wind in your hair on a 30 mph descent, and a 10 degree drop in temp as you get to the bottom of a valley is what it is all about. I urge everybody, just ride your damn bike. I raced my bike in criteriums and road races up to 60 miles. We did 100 mile training rides. I must say, with a full lubrication, maybe a chain, and upgrading to sewup's(I ran clinchers), my bike could be very competitive in any Cat 4 race today, whether road or crit. I wish I had the time, space, and arm strengrh to keep raging here, but I don't. This sport used to be about riding a bike. Alone, with friends, doing a long tour, or entering a race. THAT'S the point. Not spending 8 or 10 or 12 thousand dollars for a bike. That is utterly insane. Stick to the basics, the tried and true. Buy a basic Reynolds or Columbus steel frame, equip it modestly with parts that are reliable and usable, and go ride your bike. My bike probably weighs 22 pounds with all the crap I have hanging on it. In a 30 mile criteriun, on a flat course, using an ultralight weight set of wheels, it could compete with any 18 pound bike. End of rant. Go ride a bike!

I worked for a Bicycle Corporation back in 2007-2008; Performance Bike who had a large chain of businesses throughout the USA. In 2018 they came upon financially issues and ended up closing down all their chains. Performance in my own opinion were over charging on their retail products. They were too expensive. And looking back the manager at the time said this: "Not everyone is into cycling". You should come to Las Vegas. Practically everyone here is not into exercise at all let along out door activity. I reside in a complex of souls that are couch potatoes, don't do much, eat unhealthy foods, yet complain and are very judgmental in what one does and what one buys; A lot of them are also drowning in JEALOUSY. Note to those complaining that bikes prices are crazy: go get a land, build a factory on it, pay for water and power and waste, design parts, buy machines to make them, buy resources (or mine for materials), deliver them from the mine to your factory, employ workers, train them, do marketing, and media and then come back, let me know how easy that was. 😂😂😂 Or just stop watching and drooling over bike p o r n and find another less complicated thing to do. Bikes most of you look at and desire are complex vehicles made for luxury not necessity.
