Demo'ing Demos #4 is all about a Japanese store demo from the late 90s lost to time, titled “ KONAMI ベストコレクション ’96冬～’97春版,” or “Konami Best Collection: Winter '97 ~ Spring '96 Edition.” The disc features a total of six games from Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo: Vandal Hearts, Winning Eleven '97, Lightning Legend, Breeding Stud, Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight (Castlevania Symphony of the Night) and Parowars. Instead of being a series of playable demos and videos, it's just one long video comprised of trailers that repeats itself, something that was meant to be played at PS1 kiosks in retail outlets, similar to how promotional VHS tapes did at the time, only with blockier quality!

Gameplay was captured on real hardware using the Elgato Game Capture HD and video/audio was edited using Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite, Version 12...so a bunch of old crap.
Music in the video is from the games featured in addition to tracks from Sparkster (Konami, Mega Drive), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami, PS1) and Suikoden (Konami, PS1).

CORRECTIONS & AMENDMENTS: I refer to this disc as the "Konami Best Collection: Fuyu '96 ~ Haru '97," but I should have said "'96 Fuyu ~ '97 Haru-ban." It's such a small thing I didn't feel the need to go back and rerecord voice over (setting that up would be a major pain given my situation), and I really should have to point it out, but I just know someone will, minor as it is...so there you go! I'm not a professional translator, nor am I even a good one, so if you don't agree with my subtitles, that's great. Also, of course I "localized" them a bit, because direct translations, especially for commercials, don't always...er, translate, as I'm sure most of you know. Anyway, thank you for watching!

Thanks for noticing--I thought it would make it more "immersive." That's awesome that you had those games back then. I've never been a big sports guy, at least not since I was really young, so games about them not made by Camelot or featuring goofy cartoon characters have never really been my thing. However, Lightning Legend was a game I wanted ever since the 7th grade, seeing an article about it in GameFan Magazine, but only got to own as an adult. One of the first videos I ever did here was about that game, and while I think a lot of the information was good (I talk about secret characters, etc.), it's something I would like to redo now and get into story, history and personal history a bit. Anyway, thanks for watching as usual!

It really makes you wonder why they didn't do more with the Parodius brand. I am a sick pervert so I love the Otomedius games, but they are a major downgrade in the Gradius clone lineage compared to pretty much any Parodius entry.

I have a soft spot for the Konami PS1 sports games - mainly In The Zone and the International Track And Field (Its something like that cant remember it exactly)

Played a some of those games to death. Winning Eleven 97 might be my most played game at the time. Either way, the fighting game looks cool. Kinda as if wakuwaku 7 had a baby with Rival Schools. But yea, Breeding Studs is... interesting? I wonder if there is a generation of Horse geeks in Japan (kinda like how there are people who are REALLY into railroad trains).

It was a glorious time for Konami, for sure! There are definitely a large population of horse geeks out there, but unlike the train geeks, a lot of them are drawn to the gambling aspect of it. I was friends with a lovely couple years ago, both of them had high paying jobs, but were saddled in huge debt, I'm talking a couple hundred thousand dollars here, all due to the man's awful horse race gambling habits from the past. A shame, really. Not sure if you ever saw it, but I did do a video on Lighting Legend (the fighting game here) many years ago, in case you're interested.

The music in here is some primo stuff. Winning Eleven has that positive driving energy that all Japanese sports games had back then, from Wave Race 64 to Decathlete. The Breeding Stud stuff was super chill, like a pleasant vacation (where you occasionally force horses to run underwater in a pool, apparently). Lightning Legend has the best '90s anime music; just right in line with the likes of shows like Shadow Skill, Sorcerer Hunters or Gundam Wing. Critical Blow & Evil Zone/Eretzvaju may also be anime AF too in terms of _overall_ presentation, but as far as music goes, they can f*ck right off with your weak-sauce sh*t compared to Lightning Legend, lol. Okay that's a little extreme. Eretzvaju has a pretty awesome intro theme too (and heck, Evil Zone's Midori and Lightning Legend's Mayu _seem to be the same character_ now that I'm looking at 'em... lol). My point is, with no Goemon game on here, who'd have thunk that the sound design would still _bring so many bangers?_ Konami just *could not* produce a game with a bad soundtrack back in the day, could they?

Spot on about the music, and I'm not surprised! Funny enough, I bought Eretzvaju (what a fustercluck of letters, I'll just call it Evil Zone, ha ha) earlier this year since the price was right, finally. I definitely think Lightning Legend is better.

@@ImportGamingFTW Oh yeah, I'm with you: Lightning Legend ==> Evil Zone. EZ is conceptually very interesting but there really just doesn't seem to be enough there in practice. The JP version (it IS a flustercluck, lol) does have a great theme though... and of course, it was removed and replaced for the western release. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As far as I remember, it's not too complicated, and shouldn't be a problem if you have an intermediate level of Japanese reading ability. It's been a LONG time since I've popped it in, I'll have to check it out again sometime soon. I'd love to play the new Wars update on Switch, except I don't own a Switch anymore and I'm an idiot.

Wait, there's a Parodius themed war strategy game? Why would they do that? Why don't I own it? Proper weird. I managed to get the first UK PS1 demo disc recently. The video quality on that is nowhere near as good as this. Pretty surprised how nice the video looked hear cos I'm kinda used to seeing PS1 video being super compressed.

My question is, why was it never made into a bigger series? Also, it's really cheap still, so pick it up if you get a chance! I actually thought the video in this demo looked pretty compressed, but it probably does look better than a lot of over FMVs you'd see on demos at the time. Probably made good use of the extra disc space.

@@ImportGamingFTW Here in Brazil it became a phenomenon in winning eleven 4. On PS2 it was just Winning Eleven, no FIFA. Good times. My favorite was the WE 10.
