I don’t know why everyone thinks we’re all going camping a lot of us are just sitting in her backyard drinking beer, opening and shutting all day long. That’s the real test.😂

Fantastic video! KONG king of coolers! Done lots and lots of research. Had lots of coolers over the years and KONG is doing it right. The latches really are a huge selling point, and not talked about enough. Not only super easy a child can open, but nothing gets in the way when closing. I hated camping and coming back to a cooler that’s been propped open by a lid latch for the past hour or two. Do your own research you will see, when KONG goes up against other coolers it comes out on top. Let’s face it all rotomolded coolers are usually tough, but not all can say they are king of ice retention. Love their 20q with shoulder strap. Tall enough for wine bottles and can be use as a seat. Awesome!

just think if the coolers were put in the shade, covered with a towel, blanket or tarp to add insulation -- probably double the ice retention.

Man I dont think you are giving that 25 quart enough credit. Imagine if you were camping with a 25 quart cooler and 4 days later you still had ice lol. Add in some dry ice and man

Impressive coolers. Better and cheaper than Yeti. If you were using these coolers for drinks only, these coolers would keep drinks cold for a solid week, but like you said, if you're using it to keep food cold also, needing to keep draining water, the ice in these coolers would realistically last half as long. Never the less, they would still last longer than most other coolers. I know what my next cooler is going to be.

Best to buy a white cooler if it's going to be used in the sun. Kong makes 'winter white' color.

look at it another way. Divide the hours they kept ice by the size (number of quarts). The smaller coolers keep ice more hours per quart so they are pretty efficient in their own right.
@thecollinzboy
@thecollinzboy 3 года назад
That’s actually not correct. The reason why the bigger coolers have more water at the bottom is because they have more ice more ice means more melt. Also the reason why the bigger coolers hold ice longer is because they have more ice more ice means more time it will take to melt. You can run this test at home freeze a gallon of water and take it out and put an ice cube next to it to see which will melt into pure water faster it will always be the ice cube that melts first same thing with the different coolers the ones that hold more ice last longer

I sold my YETI Roady 20 because ice wouldn’t last 30 hr. Talked to YETI and they said nothing was wrong with it. My 10 yr old $18 old Igloo performs better! I may look into Kong next.
@thecollinzboy
@thecollinzboy 3 года назад
You’re not looking at the picture correctly. Your yeti 20 holds a small amount of ice and a small amount of ice melts fast since it is a small quantity. But if you were to buy a yeti 65 that holds a lot more ice it will hold ice for 7 days not just because it’s designed better or anything but because it holds so much more ice, more ice more time to melt. You can prove what I am saying too, take an ice cube and a frozen gallon of water and let them melt on your counter and see which melts faster. The little cube will always melt faster than the gallon because bigger amounts of ice take longer to melt. If you want you could buy a high end big capacity cooler like kong or whatever a kong 70 or kong 50 and do an ice test against your yeti 20. If you put a 20 pound bag of ice in your yeti 20 and then put a smaller amount of ice in your kong like a 10 pound or 5 pound the yeti would hold ice longer just by the fact it has more ice. You also didn’t mention if you prechilled the inner walls or prechill the drinks the night before. Putting room temp drinks inside your ice cooler is going to cause a lot of ice melt compared to putting in fridge cold temp drinks
@danthebeeman
@danthebeeman 4 года назад
Tests have shown that draining the water helps preserve the ice
@thecollinzboy
@thecollinzboy 3 года назад
Yes that is correct. If the outside temperature is 90 degrees the water at the bottom of cooler wants to become 90 degrees the reason it doesn’t become 90 is because the ice is melting to maintain the internal temperature of 32 degrees. It takes energy to keep the water 32 degrees. If you drain out the water the ice no longer has to expend it’s energy into the water

Now you need to put 20lbs of ice in all of them to make it even. Everyone knows the cooler with the most ice will win.

I don't know which size to buy. I guess get the 50 and get the 70 later? Is the 70 too big for the back of a Honda CRV? I can look up the oustide dimensions but it's the inside dimensions I can't get a grip on. Will the 50 be too small? So confusing... At least I decided on a brand and want to get the Kong. I think the 70 so I can stand up wine bottles...

I like those but I've had my coleman 5 day cooler that I use the 5 x 5 x 1 approx blue hard plastic refreezable things and it does not mess up my food and it's lasted more than 5 days. I have it between my front seats in my van and it gives me 4 extra deep cup holders/change, etc... (The new ones are too shallow to hold cups I think) I bought my coleman 15 years ago give or take a year. I love my cooler and I hope they make a thicker walled one soon along with the 4 deep cup holders. Do a test wroth the blue refreezable 5x5x1 things.
@thecollinzboy
@thecollinzboy 3 года назад
If you want a helpful tip to lengthen your ice life in your old Coleman than do this easy little trick. Freeze big blocks of ice and put them in alongside your cubed ice and you will probably get 2-3 days more ice retention. Block ice takes much longer to melt than it’s equivalent weight in cubes.

I realize that you shot this a year ago... but less than scientific approach with you leaving the lids open and (gasp) putting your hands thru the ice while taping. Notice the 25 is open while the 50 lid is closed. Kong builds a A-list cooler but your approach leaves me with real questions. Try 10 lbs of ice in the 25, 20 in the #50, and 44 lbs in the 110, use a digital thermostat and leave the lids closed! See how each cooler performs. JMO
@danielbuchanan5327
@danielbuchanan5327 4 года назад
Scott Como his approach is actually more realistic because it shows the coolers being opened and being rummaged through just like real use.
@thecollinzboy
@thecollinzboy 3 года назад
Daniel Buchanan he actually showed a biased approach he put different amounts of ice in each cooler, so of course the 70 and 110 are going to keep ice longer as they have way more ice, more ice means more time it will take to melt it all. If he put 1 ten pound bag of ice in each cooler and then run the test that would be way better at seeing which would outperform and honestly I they they all would perform the same
