When Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, Queen Wilhelmina was forced to evacuate to the United Kingdom. At first she refused but after strong pressure from her cabinet she left The Netherlands together with part of the Dutch government who continued as a war cabinet.
To this day, Queen Wilhelmina's flee to the UK is a controversial subject. Many Dutch citizens understood her decision and appreciated her regular broadcasts via Radio Orange, but a significant number of citizens still brand her as a coward, despite the fact that she would most likely have become a German 'puppet' or even enjailed if she had stayed.
Wilhelmina can be seen here at her writing desk, supplied by a regular stream of documents by her adjudant François van 't Sant.
Wilhelmina frequently held meetings at her house outside of London with the Dutch war cabinet and resistance fighters. A well-know resistance fighter was Eric Hazelhof-Roelfsema also known from the film "Soldier of Orange" ("Soldaat van Oranje").
