In this film I will take you back in time to the Roaring Twenties during which we visit the wonderful beach and fishing village of Scheveningen.
This village lies on the Dutch North Sea coast near the residence of its Government, The Hague (Den Haag in Dutch).
Huge crowds always used to flock to the Scheveningen Pier, officially "Wandelhoofd Wilhelmina" opened by Queen Wilhelmina and her husband Prins Hendrik in 1901.
Sadly this pier burned down during WWII in 1943 and was replaced by a new pier a few hundred meters more North in the 1960s. We see the "chique of The Hague", Wassenaar and the rest of The Netherlands roam the Boulevard, the Pier and beaches.
You will see what I believe is the most spectacular and rare scene in this film. It shows a wonderful panoramic view of Scheveningen in 1922 that I have never come across before. It was taken from the roof of the Kuhrhaus.
On the far left we see a glimpse of Scheveningen's Palace Hotel, followed by a very rare view in the distance of its old station that was demolished in 1953.
At present you will find the Europa hotel there with next to it a huge residential block and 3-storey parking garage at the Zwolsestraat.
This whole area has now changed beyond recognition with two high rise residential blocks, one with a golden dome on top, and a long arcade-alike apartment block next to it.
The high building you see in the middle is still there, but currently hidden behind an ugly parking garage and police station. For decades it housed an Indonesian restaurant.
The camera now pans to the Badhuisplein, redubbed Gevers Deynout plein in 1891, which is now also totally changed and in fact utterly spoiled by two ugly apartment blocks left and right of the square.
This is where the trams would stop and turn around to go back to The Hague to pick up more beach lovers. Notice the many open tram cars that were in use during the summer.
On the right we see the famous Hotel Les Galeries with its Italian style arcades. It was sadly demolished around 1972 together with the Grand Hotel.
Above we see the famous round circus building that was opened in 1904. The lions, horses and other acts have long disappeared since. In 1991 the circus was converted into a musical theather by Joop van den Ende. The building is currently hidden behind the Holland Casino and a huge Pathé cinema.
Subsequently you wlll see some more great footage of the area of the Boulevard close to the Kuhrhaus.
Just to conclude that the destructive forces that were at play in the early 1970s are beyond comprehension. Scheveningen's Council and especially the Exploitatie Maatschappij Scheveningen, EMS, including dubious project developer Reinder Zwolsman, have a lot to answer to. If ever the Dutch expression "vergane glorie" (vanished glory) can be applied to its utmost extent then it is to Scheveningen.
The last part of this documentary focusses on what lied behind the glamour and glory of Scheveningen as beach resort. We take a walking trip through Scheveningen's back streets in the old village, in particular surrounding its main shopping street, the Keizerstraat.
The shops seen there were filmed in 1931 for the occasion of the opening of the new second inner harbour by regentess Queen Emma.
The CC captions will be the place to view the names of the streets as soon as we get more information.
Thanks for watching!

Fantastic film of life in the 1920’s. Beautiful Victorian buildings in my home town of Leeds (UK) were also demolished to make way for ugly, modern and soulless structures. It’s so sad what vandalism was done in the 1960s/1970’s in the name of progress. Thanks Rick for the upload

I love these beautiful restored films. Thank you so much for posting this. To all the people who commented about people being happier back then, please get real. There was terrible poverty and a bad health situation. If you had the bad luck of being a little different due to a disability or physical abnormality the bullying was relentless. Also there was discrimination and racism and alcoholism. Families with a lot of children lived in very small houses without plumbing. Women had little to non freedom and were often forced to stay in abusive mariages. I love to see these beautiful films but please stop with the nostalgia. A few years after this was filmed Europe was in a terrible war and the worst genocide ever. I am really happy those “good old days” are over.

@Rick88888888
@Rick88888888 Год назад
Good question! To be honest, I don't think the new Pier would have looked nice smack in front of the Kuhrhaus: Too pompous, too large, too high (especially the tower), too many islands and more recently too ugly. They should have simply rebuilt a Pier in the style of the old one. But, hey in the sixties and seventies nobody seems to have wanted to preserve the old "grandeur" look. In stead it is a big mish mash of modern (crap) architecture and now most people are sorry about this (too late!).

What a wonderful video! I loved how so many of the people looked directly into the camera as they passed by. I felt a spiritual connection, as a part of the river of life. A hundred years ago isnt really that long, both my parents were children then. The film is amazingly clear. Thank you, Rick.

About two blocks behind this boulevard it was utter misery. Slums with illness, terrible housing and poor widows of fishermen who passed at sea. Scheveningen being next to the residence of government made it a Kutort for the upper classes of The Hague and beyond, but that's only a tiny faction of the populace.

Doen!

Thank you for this video/film. I’m not sure if you created it but it’s very well done. Made me smile to see so much happiness. The life and times has been captured in a way that I almost felt I was there. The person taking the original films new what he was doing, creating a time capsule! The clothes the buildings, cars, bicycles, food and drink. Very sad people decided to rune it all in later decades. This area is what I would have wanted to see on a visit there. I will watch this again and again instead. I’m also sure I’ll watch the other videos you’ve shared. Thank you 😊

Great and unique look into Scheveningen. But tragic also, because a lot of unique buildings are now distroyed. In the shopping street there was a Philips dealer, which selled Philips radio and loudspeakers. In the shop window i can clearly see a model 2016, which was introduced in 1928. I hope this helpes to narrow down the exact date of the film. Thank you for uploading this great piece of dutch history!

My late father worked for Philips UK from 1952 to 1985 he regularly went to Eindhoven, as a small boy I used to love the Drost chocolate and Zoute Drop he'd bring back. I still like visiting Holland but it's a shadow of the country it was in the 1970s. Philips too are a mismanaged spent force. Other than their medical electronics the rest are Chinese made consumer products mimicking untold others.
