"The Konix Multisystem was an unreleased game console by British computer peripheral company Konix. It was widely announced in the computing press in 1989, and was intended to follow the success of the company's range of joysticks. The console resembled a dashboard-style games controller, and could be configured with a steering wheel, a flight yoke, and motorbike handles. Konix promised advanced features such as a hydraulic chair and force feedback steering wheel.
Development work was carried out by Flare Technology based in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, with assistance from British games programmer Jeff Minter. The console was an outgrowth of Flare's Flare One computer. However the system was beset by delays, and was never released in its intended form. After the project was abandoned, Flare Technology began on Flare Two, which was bought by Atari and, after further development, was released as the Atari Jaguar game console.
Konix had revolutionary ideas for the Multisystem (such as the 'Power Chair'), which moved with the console (similar to virtual reality devices existing today but in a smaller scale).
The Konix Multisystem's design was later released independently as the MSC Super MS-200E Multi-System, although this was simply an inexpensive PC games controller, without any special internal hardware." - wikipedia

I can remember seeing this thing at a computer show when I was a kid. The magazines were full of hype about how it was going to be the greatest system on Earth. When they finally announced that it wasn't getting released I was genuinely gutted. Being a massive Space Harrier fan I was dreaming of having a system that could do it justice and provide that arcade feel. Alas, it was never to be.

Why this was never released is way beyond me. It looks phenomenal.

I took 10 years to conclude it: probably it would be way too overpriced
@bluespartan076

Investors pulled funding at the last minute citing that they feared it would crush the market that Sega and nintendo built up that they also invested in. It also would have probably faced identical problems that the Atari Jaguar faced as internally, the jaguar chipset was built very similar to the konix multisystem's: 1 CPU for graphics and one for sound and both being controlled by a central CPU. Developers often criticized the Atari jaguar for its chipset being insanely difficult to develop for and most studios backed out on creating games for it and any who stayed only used the central motorola 68000 CPU rather than using the extra custom chips. A possibly similar fate/problem that the konix multisystem's would face as well

All of that 32 bit processing power, just to produce games with the graphic fidelity of an 8 bit SMS. WOW!

Those clips with the SMS-looking graphics were tech demos done on an earlier version of the system specs, if I recall correctly.

All those accessories look cool the light gun is amazing. The chair is to a head of it's time to have ever worked and would have mostly likely been to expensive for most people. 10 out of 10 for imagination.

Everyone in these comments are completely misinformed. The speed by which it's the game is moving. Processing information, can only be done on 32 bit and above. It has the ability to generate better graphics, but not with the frame rate it was generating

Flare One. Around 2002 I was selling microchips in the Cambridge area and met a guy who claimed to not only have been part of the Jaguar team, but also claimed to have started work on a Jaguar 2. Professionalism (what little I had) prevented me from stopping the meeting right there and then to leap over and start waterboarding him for more info. Given the eventual death of that career anyway, I still wish sometimes I had given in to that urge. Would have been one for the grandkids..

This was vaporware before I found out about it, good to see what it could have been had it been released. Wouldn't have won prizes for graphics but the controller system is certainly an unexploited niche, the "killer app" as it were. Just read an interview and it sounds like they would have been successful had they kept the development secret.

A pity this never appeared, the chap behind it was incredibly passionate and energised about it, according to an article in Retro Gamer. Not sure I get the logic of the TV mounted on the seat thing; if I ride my motorcycle and lean to the right, the earth doesn't magically tilt to the right as well!

Here in the UK. We sort of sustained ourselves after the console crash of 83. Konix was intended to carry what we loved about our local games. The C64, Spectrum, Amiga and so on. Then of course, we would introduce the next big step into gaming interaction. Curse Sega with that more affordable Megadrive.
@Nigaromia

I reality Konix was just a joystick manufacturer that got eventually over it's head with this system. They run out of money and released it as a PC compatible joystick/steering wheel. I think ACE magazine back in the day called it the 'Amiga killer'.

Had it been released, who knows what would have happened, but I have my doubts it would've gone anywhere. They invest all this energy into these peripherals (probably very expensive) and then decide to store their games on 3 and a half inch floppies. It just strikes me as focusing on the wrong things.

It probably sounded right at the time, but at this age it seems like some kind of joke. xD And I think those (probably expensive) accessories would fit better in the games of today. I don't think a fake-3D-flying game can offer the same adrenaline rush as any of the modern games. Cool idea though. :)

Oh man, I just saw this on a DVD yesterday and was intending to post it today, you beat me to it! This console concept is ridiculous and would of never of been financially possible even for a huge company like Nintendo, let alone some unheard of British developer. Surely this is nothing more than a hoax! The mentioning of "32-bit graphics" and "CD quality sound" while some awful After Burner knock off is shown made me laugh.

Yeah. That looks like it would have been far too expensive to be successful. Also, I think we've learned that a console succeeds based on software - not on having superior technology. All of the top game developers at that time were in Japan.

Hah, 3.5" disks! I'm pretty sure about half of the games would've stopped working after a few years. The old disks tend to loose the data after a while, even when they're not used and are stored properly. But this was an interesting concept nevertheless. I have two of those MSC Multisystem PC-wheels, and it's a nice curiosity to have around.

I wonder how long it would have lasted if it did come out, 2 years tops perhaps? Either way games would have been so much cheaper on it than on the mega drive and snes due to the floppy drive but...ITS A GAMES CONSOLE! NOT A COMPUTER! Plus, the games ive seen have the graphical quality of an atari st with amstrad cpc 'chunkiness' so looks quite dated for when it was meant to come out. That chair looks like a laugh though

The scariest thing is that they included US Gold among the "world's top software manufacturers" when everyone agreed that all US Gold games were garbage. No, scratch that, the scariest thing is that the Konix Multisystem would have been less powerful than the Amiga 500, which was released 2 years before Konix even decided to make a console, and had it actually been released, it would have gone down in history as the most overhyped flop of all time.

At 0.31 He says 32 Bit and at 1.04 He says 16 Bit. The Graphics are terrible. 32 Bit Games on a Floppy Disk? HAHAHA No. From what was shown the Commodore Amiga has better graphics and that was 16 Bit. I seen better graphics on 8 Bit machines. They told some steaming ball of lies to sell this. The peripherals looked the best part too which is not good. Good job they didn't release that.

Seriously, who the hell can afford to buy a motorized seat with a monitor and speakers built into it?
