Konmari Your Life: Tidying Tips from Marie Kondo
www.japansociety.org/event/kon...
Don’t miss your chance to meet Japanese tidying guru and international best-selling author Marie Kondo and pick up tips for transforming your home into a happy, organized space! Named one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People in the World in 2015, Marie developed a home-organizing method that has taken the world by storm. Attendees will receive a copy of her new book, Spark Joy, a comprehensive, illustrated manual on how to declutter every room in the house. In the new volume Marie also addresses lingering questions, such as what to do with those necessary objects that do not spark joy in our lives. The talk will be moderated by New York Times Style columnist Molly Young. Followed by a book-signing reception.
Part of Women on the Rise
This season Japan Society launches a new long-term initiative Women on the Rise, bringing to the fore programming and content related to women, and shining a light on women who are pushing boundaries and expanding horizons within their field.
In the 2015-2016 Season, Talks+ Programs at Japan Society were generously sponsored by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG). United Airlines was the exclusive U.S. Airlines sponsor of Talks+ Programs at Japan Society. Additional support was provided by Chris A. Veritas Twice: No, he wrote translator and he meant translator. That's not being nit picky. That is ** making up * something to nit pick about. Why would you post something so mental?
@fenixcreciente8576
@fenixcreciente8576 5 лет назад
Anthony Starfield: While the poster's meaning was evident, it's not "mental" to point out the contrast between these 2 terms, which according to a succinct explanation on languagescientific.com is "only the difference in the medium: the interpreter translates orally, while the translator interprets written text." Actually, the interpreter was doing some minimal note-taking, but seemed to do a stellar job.

Came here to cleanse my eyes and ears after some episodes of the "Get Organized with The Home Edit" show on Netflix. Good for "The Home Edit" that what they do works for them and their clients but it's so standoffish how rich celebs evade their own messes, glamorous hoards only the wealthy can pull off and hire people to create cold and surgical spaces for the satisfaction of the sight, but where's the emotional connection? I praise Marie Kondo for helping me slowly build a bond with everything I own which also helps me to consider before buying something if it will actually bring me joy. Her humanist approach is a healthy alternative to the organization of our homes and has a more profound impact when we reflect and wonder what decisions spark joy in our lives. Remember that the Konmari method is nowhere near apathetic minimalism contemporary trends, is a method that expects you to be respectful and grateful for your house and belongings. Not to just throw away but to embrace and organize your crazy collections when they truly spark joy in you.

What a fantastic presentation! I have been inspired to use Marie Kondo’s method as it makes so much sense...the order (clothes, books...)...the connecting with the joy an object gives...the gratitude for faithful service of things you let go of. I start with my clothes tomorrow morning, as it is now time for me to sleep so I can start the new week, the new day, the new me refreshed. Marie is a genius, and she is so sweet and cute. I love how she represents the best in the Japanese culture. And I LOVE her method - it's extremely helpful. Now we need somebody to invent a method to make humans stop littering.
@faithrada
@faithrada 6 лет назад
That (littering) must be a type of mental illness.. where one feels so disconnected with the world around them that they loose all respect for themselves. I used to walk around with a bag.. picking up trash, and muttering insults and getting angry at disrespectful people who littered...but one day I had an epiphany. I began to have compassion for those poor ignorant souls that were so far from the source of their own joy... so now I just walk along with my bag, I serve nature and my surroundings. It's a choice... I now consciously choose Joy. As for the litterers... Karma happens. Clearly World Peace starts WITHIN ourselves. So now, far less anger , .far more Peace and Joy.

I'd be interested to see how the KonMari method can be applied to our digital life. I feel like my computer and inbox are utterly cluttered. . . . sometimes more cluttered than my physical surroundings.
@VisualMind
@VisualMind 7 лет назад
Yes absolutely! Exactly my thoughts. I already did almost all my pictures, texts, inbox... I'm a photographer so I've got TONS of photos and other stuff like business documents and so on. I already started trying kind of the konmari method here. At first I sorted all pictures of clients that I need to keep and put the pictures in folders with their names. These I didn't sort out a lot as I'm not the one to decide whether they spark joy. Then I put all my pictures I've done for my portfolio, to learn, for fun or work with models in just one folder to see how much of them I have. And now I started to import them to Lightroom and give 5 stars to the ones I want to keep. The others I just delete and thank them. Also I am studying graphic design at the moment and had a similar approach concerning those files. I just created a folder with the stuff I want to keep and put the things that spark joy in there. For my inbox I also decided which stuff I needed to keep and put them in folders. Then I cleared my inbox. And every time I get a newsletter now I unsubscribe from it if it doesn't spark joy. Maybe I could give you at least some new thoughts, digital is very tough!

@fenixcreciente8576
@fenixcreciente8576 5 лет назад
@@glauciamsq - From her account of her extreme "tidying" fetish since early childhood--i.e.; chronically organizing & throwing out others' belongings to the point of actually disrupting peace & harmony in the home (which you must admit not too many 5-yr.-olds do)--I suspect Marie may have some OCD going on. But I give her credit as she seems to have found a way to channel this tendency productively in her adult career, & thereby potentially help a great many people struggling w/what has become a modern-day plague of over-abundance. My only serious concern w/her approach to dealing w/one's inanimate possessions would be her encouraging people to greet their home as if it were an animate entity, thank their things directly, create a "power spot" inhabited by certain personally meaningful objects in their home (basically, creating an altar), etc. Whether people realize this or not, these are basic tenets of Shintoism--which is an animistic religion (reportedly Marie previously worked at a Shinto shrine & sold charms). By investing in them in this manner, while they may emerge w/more functional & pleasant physical surroundings, they can also inadvertently invite unwanted spirits into their homes & lives which may cause serious disruption for them & those around them down the road ("clutter" of the highest order)... if you don't believe me, look up "Shintoism" online--it's quite an eye-opener. For those who are interested in Christianity, the Bible makes it quite clear that all we have comes from the one true & living God, & He is the one to be thanked for what we acquire in this life of whatever kind--otherwise, we are creating idols. However, I very much like the idea of pausing a moment & thanking Him for anything that has helped those in our home along their journey, especially when parting w/those items... & the "sparking joy" concept is gold.

I have applied her method but what about after you do Laundry? Once you organize the Konmari Method is very organized of course and I love it but what about how to keep things organized after doing laundry or to keep the kitchen tidy even after cooking? I hope she makes a book about keeping things organized even after real life happens
@faithrada
@faithrada 6 лет назад
What I have found is that once my kitchen got organized and tidy... it created a FLOW to things.. so that it is much easier to maintain. That which IS Tidy has a tendency to remain Tidy. A place for everything and everything in its place. If something does not rate its own place... then I have to ask myself.. should I even keep it?

I gave it all away to The Salvation Army and I don't even put My Socks like Balls, I keep them together. I have also stopped buying a lot of things ie CD's, Books, Magazines where I have saved a lot of Money. Do you remember when Alice Nelson's Doppelganger Cousin Emma came to visit on The Brady Bunch and she taught The Bradys a lot about Organization including teaching Bobby how to fold a Shirt. After Alice came back they realized how much they missed her. Cousin Emma in many ways was ahead of her time.

I know their are bound to be many people that find her technique of expressing love and gratitude through the palm of your hands silly, but if you think about it....when you do it the way she instructs you will find whether your clothes actually serve a purpose. Do they keep you warm the way there suppose to? Does a special occasion dress make you feel pretty? Therefore, if an item doesn't serve a purpose or "Spark Joy" in your life what is the point in keeping it?
@faithrada

So at 39.00 she talked about telling things 'thank you' - thing items you are giving away or donating or selling...things that your mother passed down - that is truly a huge emotional experience. I had to think, "it's ok with my mom so it's ok to give way". That's hard!
@FoyeStender
@FoyeStender 5 лет назад
So I personally (doesn't mean it isn't out there) have not seen the deep, emotional part of this process. The book emphasizes that it 'changes your life' but doesn't mention the process it takes to get there - I mean wow! It's all good and all necessary but it is an mental and emotional process...and most definitely, spiritual..but a necessity.

Some would say that women collect two. We collect make up, jewelry, purses and shoes. I also collect sunglasses and Jackets. Not to mention all my face and hair stuff. If you have three or more things that do the same thing, I would consider that a collection. On the other hand man collect tools, cards Star Wars figurines. We don’t really see those things other than tools being useful for something.

Actually.....I folded 2X / size 22 women's clothing in this style and I can attest that it DOES work, and the fabric was flimsy with some of them.

I hear you... but I think that is an important part of the process... it really does take some initial commitment if one is serious about changing one's life after all. I found that once I emptied it all on the floor I just wanted to keep going. I couldn't afford to dally . Once I was committed to tidying it sort of took on a life of its own. The end result was SO freeing... It truly surprised me. I will say though.. I only did My own clothes. BUT.. as Hubby started observing what I was up to he began to catch on.. and to my amazement.. 2 large bags of his old winter clothes ended up in the Donate pile. I do believe that an inspired attitude is contagious.
