Thank you Marie. I threw away clothes given to me that didn't fit ,cheap "back up" jeans, clothes I felt was too revealing, photos of me with people that didn't make me feel happy, textbooks I no longer need and things I have purchased on impulse - all thanked for being with me during my journey and sent away. I feel so much happier now and I agree it is is a philosophy too - throw away things that no longer make you happy or bring joy. It is not a waste at all because it taught you valuable lessons that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

What I gather from Marie's talk is that a decluttered space shows that the person's life is also clutter free and easy. If that's the lifestyle we want to follow then keeping few things, few people, few of everything in our life gives us joy.
@SoopoidShmezzle
@SoopoidShmezzle 8 лет назад
I wish she mentioned it when gifts came up, but that was my number-one takeaway from both of her books, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and Spark Joy. I feel guilty getting rid of things that other people gave me, that I don't want. So I keep them, and feel bad every time I see it. Her advice is that a gift's purpose was not meant to be USED, it was meant to be GIVEN. Once it has been given, and conveyed the feelings of the giver, it has fulfilled it's purpose and may safely be discarded.

I have this problem. I also anticipate or visualize that the person who gave me the item visits my home and asks about or mentions the item that they gave me. where's the .... I gave you? or do you use that ...I gave you? etc. I wouldn't know how to respond. I don't want to offend the person and tell them that I gave it away or the it out. how would you get around that situation?
@SoopoidShmezzle
@SoopoidShmezzle 7 лет назад

I find it so delightful that she says "next today" rather than "tomorrow". A weird way to think about it but its true :)
@mkzone13
@mkzone13 8 лет назад
+Free Jazz She's actually saying "nexto day". When transliterated into Japanese, the English word 'next' becomes NEKUSUTO. When the Japanese say an English word that ends in a 't', it usually comes out as 'to' (sounds like "tow"). The 'u' sounds usually get swallowed, so it sounds more like NEKSTO.
@astropgn
@astropgn 8 лет назад
+Free Jazz I don't know Japanese, but I bet it has to do with how her language is structured. I bet if we look, the word for "tomorrow" in Japanese is the connection between the concept of next and day.

@jomon324

+Marcos Vinícius Petri (今日 kyou: today) (昨日 kinou: yesterday) (明日 ashita: tomorrow) notice the 日 as the end of the word? That means "sun." Ashita's beginning kanji 明 means "bright, or light" so the "brightness" of a "day" is "tomorrow." This kanji 今 means "now." So the "now day" is today. "Bright day" is tomorrow. 昨 in kinou for "yesterday" means literally "previous." Previous day = yesterday. Now day = today. Bright day = tomorrow. I think Japanese is really a cool language. ^w^

Here is my translation from the Q&A at 26:00 (It is not a literal translation, but I tried to grasp what Marie Kondo was trying to convey). Q: "I have a lot of things that I need, but I don't like or they don't inspire joy. How do I find the balance between keeping versus discarding them?" (Ex: GMAT book, old kitchen utensils). A: "For the items that don't spark joy but are items that are necessities/essentials currently- Try to think of it in this way- as they are items that are BEING OF USE to you or supporting you. This can also be thought of as: that they are items that are trying to make you happy or bring you joy. So my advice is, if you are going to keep that item, then be PROUD of that item. Then, to that particular item- shower it with many compliments. You will then soon begin to harbor/sparkle joy with those items." I'd like to take a moment to say thank you to the translator. This little portion took me about 30min to translate trying to really think what Marie Kondo was trying to convey from her heart. However, if I was on the spot like that- I would've probably only been able to make a literal translation. The translator did a great job keeping Marie's words authentic- and she did not add her own opinions/emotions into the translation. If translation was lost- it was most likely due to the overwhelming amount of amazingness Ms. Kondo had in each selected message she had for the audience. This 42minute clip is only just the beginning of her magic! The rest is truly only in her book. If I can help in anyway to translate any other portion- please feel free to let me know! :D

Thanks for your comment and that translation! I knew something was a bit off in that reply in the video. The other point I didn’t see anyone make is that Japanese is not an easy language to translate - it’s full of nuance and implication. There are sometimes no direct translations to English for Japanese words or phrases, and as a translator it would be hard to catch these things and convey them in English on the spot. There’s no way I could do what the translator did!

How To Organize - Konmari Method 1. Tidy in one shot as quickly and completely as possible. We need a shock to get it done. Therefore set a deadline for organizing. It could be one week if doing it everyday , every weekend, etc.. TIdying is not an every day event but think of it as a Festival, a special event 2. How are you going to do it ? Sort by category, not by location. It never ends if you try to ticy in one portion of the closet or living room. Organize my category and do it quickly eg. If organizing the clothes first, make a big pile of all the clothes in your house . Similarly, take out all the books from your bookcase and organize then in one location in the house. When you bring out all your stuff in one location you can visually see how many books etc...that you have. We rarely understand how much stuff we have around us. It is a great opportunity to decide which ones you really need to keep or get rid of. The criteria for sorting what you need from what you don't is : 3. Does it Spark Joy ? If you look at one thing, you should question if that thing makes you happy, impressed. It's more important to think which one you want to keep than what to get rid of. How to make a decision : 1. Make sure you touch the item. Imagine how you feel when you touch it 2. You should feel a reaction from your body. If every part of your body is enlivened that is the right reaction 3. If the item doesnt give you any inspiration, and your body starts feeling down...then you don't need it. Try this .. 17.26 ( to be continued )

The last few words of each, "paragraph" (I don"t know what else to call it because it wasn't at the end of each sentence)she spoke before the translation are almost in a whisper on top of a soft exhale. I'm sorry if that didn't make sense, just listen to her and you will know what I mean. But it sounded very soothing.

I really like the way she speaks Japanese. It's so clean. I found it interesting that she loves to organize as a hobby before she did it as a job. Organizing wears me out.My only concern is if I were to judge everything by how I feel, I won't have anything in my house and I don't have the money to replace it with items I do love.
@Gybing
@Gybing 9 лет назад
+bigbuggie5 She mentioned in answering to a question (somewhat lost in interpretation a little) that things that are absolutely necessary although not giving you any "spark joy", you should try to "love" it and they will start to spark joy for you... this was my question too all along so Marie really clarified that. So you don't have to replace it if you feel that you NEED that thing.

Having a very, VERY messy and crammed space sat on the back of my mind ALL THE TIME for the last couple of years. It dawned on me when one time I realised that I was too embarrassed to invite my friends over. Those were friends with whom I was at boarding school, and friends with whom I studied at university. They have seen me in all kinds of state, we looked after each other when drunk in that ridiculous ways that only students could, we waded over one another's laundry all over the floor during exam times etc and yet I was too embarrassed to invite them over, that was how bad that was. So I read her book in half a day. Then next day, Sunday, I got up, got dressed in a smart dress, lit a candle and said a prayer to the flat, and I got started. I finished at 2 am, and this took my breath away. Now I am inviting everyone over :-) And I'm telling everyone about it and buying this book for friends who might need it.

To anyone who is looking to get into the KonMari Method I 100% recommend you to get the book. There’s so much more information, as this was just a slight introduction. In my opinion, not the best one either. I think the translator didn’t really do it justice. Point is, the method is very specific and lengthy, there are explanations for everything and in the end it all makes sense. It’s totally worth it and as she said, the best time to start is now! Right when you feel the impulse. to start.

Marie is lovely. It was good to hear the questions afterwards as this highlights the complexity of the subject. There is a method but there are also variations. The point is self and life-style and joy- different for each person. Excellent.

I'm Japanese and so proud of Mrie's success in abroad. One thing from this video I found that the translation was not fully translated as she was talking and questions from some audience were not fully translated to English that was. It was very important part and what she really wanted to say, but it was bit short cut!

A piece common wisdom: Some people are simply messy. Put a messy person in a tidy room, and that room will quickly clutter up. Put a tidy person in a messy room, and things will magically become organized. However, I do believe an organized space produces a less stressful mind.

I wish I knew Japanese. I really want to hear what she has to say but not through an interpreter. I am a pretty organized person and also have read and keep reading on the subject. I loved this book. I already do a lot of what is in it, but still found a wealth of fine-tuning information. I love it and highly recommend you get the book for yourself.

Watch the video to the end. The interpreter does a solid job interpreting the English into Japanese for Kondo-san. And if it seems as though Kondo-san isn't directly answering the question, it's because you haven't read the book. Kondo-san is stressing the importance of 1. What brings you joy 2. how important it is to know HOW TO FOLD (because that is the building block to organizing) 3. what kind of life do you imagine/want it to be? If you can understand and use these three points, it will begin to transform your life. READ THE BOOK FIRST!

I just finished the audiobook and it was very interesting- not just another how to declutter book. The book that helped me get rid of things I'd hauled around for 30 years was Clutters Last Stand. It deals more with the excuses we make for hanging onto junk. That was what set me free.

My wife was watching this late last night and it woke me up. She is adorable. Smiles so much it makes me smile. I think I’ll watch more of her techniques. I have an issue in my toolboxes. But the rest of the house is fine. I don’t even have dresser drawers. I hang everything. My wife has the drawers.

as a compulsive purger (my mom is a hoarder) I think this method is good for hoarders as Marie's gentle and positive focused on the purging. It's hard NOT to sort by location but I'll layer her method with my traditional one.

What a lovely lady, and a very smart concept! I just finished reading the book, and I'm starting on my house tomorrow. I am not a hoarder or a messy person, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of things I possess - it's insane... I am so looking forward to having more space to live and breathe in my home.

Gotta say, I can't believe I just bought and finished a book (the first in years mind you) about tidying. My partner laughed at me when I told her what I was reading but as soon as I told her one of the concepts I learned from it, she was amazed. This book really is life-changing because it teaches you how to approach life in a new way. It's unfortunate that this video doesn't really do KonMari and her message any justice. Get the book. It isn't just about "tidying". I'm buying everyone in my family this book for XMas lmao

Endezeichen Grimm They're useless. I can understand her English just fine, but when she starts speaking Japanese (which is what I really want the subtitles for), it just says [SPEAKING JAPANESE]. Why did they even bother?
@lihiejacob
@lihiejacob 8 лет назад
+Revina Que because those subtitles aren't for native English speakers but for the hearing impaired, and as there's a translation into English right after each chunk of Japanese, the extra subtitles would be redundant.

Thank you for the upload! This is amazing. The best de-clutter video. I saw many but they just talk, talk, talk and speech is somehow disorganized. While her speech, mind and also instruction are well organized. Someone complains about the translator, but I think the translator is very good! Sometimes Japanese use romantic, poetic or childish words that are hard to translate in Western languages. It's not very straight forward language (I'm a Japanese), so her translation is very good!
