On episode #052 of Korda’s The Thinking Tackle Podcast is renowned carp fishing and bait guru, John Baker.
John Baker is one of the most respected and highly influential bait specialists around today. Since the 1970s, John's baits and ingredients have accounted for numerous specimen-sized carp, substantiating his reputation as one of the most informed and knowledgeable people on the subject today.
John's fishing experience is vast and varied, having fished for carp on some of the country's most influential waters such as Savay, Redmire, Ashley pool, Darenth, and Harrow. His European carp fishing has seen him land several fish over 70 pounds.
As well as carp, John is an accomplished specimen angler catching numerous other specimen species such as barbel, trout, grayling, salmon, perch, and tench. He has also experienced the adrenaline rush of catching tarpon in Casta Rica.
John has written extensively about bait for numerous publications over the years. Also, he's the author of Modern Barbel Baits and Tactics. He has recently started his own highly informative RU-vid channel ‪@johnbakerbaits9108‬, covering all subjects relating to this topic.

What a lovely man, I'm an older lady only getting back into carp fishing after i retired a few year's ago and i love it. The stories he tells and the information about bait, flavourings and ingredients is just amazing. I am someone who regularly uses Manukau honey and have wondered about it been a natural sweetener, i will be giving it a try this spring, thank you for a great podcast.

This man has led me to make my own bait and based on John’s amazing correspondence i caught a fish on my first visit to my new syndicate this year and this lake is absolutely rock hard so I’m putting it down to everything he has just spoken about with quality ingredients and so on , I’m actually back for my second visit this week so fingers crossed I might sneak smoother one out 👍🏻🎣

This is my new favourite podcast! What an amazing guy John is and how he describes the mixes and flavours he uses is just superb. I had heard of him but had never knew just how brilliant he was at all things bait making. I could listen to him all day such is his wealth of knowledge and soft calming voice. He comes across as an absolute gentleman and i would love to listen to John and Frank on a podcast together one day.

Ever since moving to Canada in the late 90's I've been well out of touch with UK carping. I have many memories fishing the late 80's and early 90's and still have my copy of Carp Fever. I had no idea John wrote the bait section and his reference to ground-up maple peas stuck with me. Back in the '90s, on my local lake in the northwest, I used his ground-maples boilie recipe and on my first trip, it took the lake record common at the time which I still remember to this day!! Credit to John for putting me on to this at the time it made sense as many people fished with maple peas but I didn't know anyone that went to the trouble to grind them to make a boilie! Awesome podcast!

An excellent Podcast. John Baker is such a knowledgeable gent. Really enjoyed hearing about his Savay days, Kevin Maddocks, and that cad TP, lol. It was, also, interesting to hear that he mentioned Keith Selleck, the part-owner of Middlesex Angling Centre and originator of Ala-Salar, who tragically drowned at Savay lake in 1994 (I lived just up the road from the shop. Keith was a truly decent man. One in a million). Ala-Salar is an awesome flavour. Keith and his business partner Jim (Can't remember Jim's surname, now, but he was the fella John was referring to, in the Podcast, with regards to acquiring the rights to Ala-Salar after Keith's death) produced shelf life boilies of the same flavour coupled with the very popular Savoury Extra base mix, as well. They were excellent baits. And led me away from the Richworth's, Mistral's, Crafty Catcher's and other inferior readymades at the time, and ultimately onto making up my own baits in the future, incorporating some of Mr Baker's popular product range, too. Keep up the good work, guys! Cheers. 👍

Hi guys, Simon, you said you used the Trent Baits Freshwater Shrimp and it was devastating so why did you stop using it out of interest? I agree and still use the shrimp to this day as it’s easily the best bait I’ve ever used!

@EricPollarrd
@EricPollarrd 2 года назад
I’m using someone’s homemade monster crab based on Rod’s stuff, with some haith’s Robin red thrown in on demand, stuff bloody reeks the house out. Blanked a whole month on it so far on a 1 acre lake. I mean the whole fish being attracted yards and yards away etc I just don’t buy it at all. I’ve seen way too much evidence against the theory than for it. I guess a strong flowing river is viable, but a slow towing lake, you simply have to be slap bang on em. I’ve fished margins for hours on end without a sniff, then moved literally 3 yards further out and been inundated with fish. They don’t whiff from afar at all
