Tenfura : fried in oil food : Japanese Odeng : mixed fish meat Japanese Koreans tend to confuse that odeng is a Korean word and Tenbura is a Japanese word for Odeng. This is a total misuse. Both Odeng and Tenbura are Jzpanese.

Grandma didn't receive money because she liked the way a young stranger tried her food. She is a warm-hearted grandmother. Grandma wouldn't have wanted to receive it sincerely even if you gave her money. So all you have to do is be grateful. Koreans often express their true feelings like this.

Hi Ken, I'm happy to watch your videos. I'm Korean, but I'm currently living in another country. When I feel homesick, I always look for videos about my hometown. I like your travel style, such as trying local food, and visiting supermarkets and local markets. The first lady who gave you free food and the man who paid for your food on the first day represent what we call "Jeong" culture in Korea. It is a culture of giving without expecting anything in return. I really miss this "Jeong" culture; I think it's a very precious part of being Korean. Anyway, I'm really happy that you enjoyed South Korea. Thank you for uploading videos about your travels in my country. I hope you and other foreigners love South Korea as much as I do. Thanks!

I'm Korean. It'll be not easy to find trash bins on the street in Korea. Korean government removed all the trash bins on the street for various reasons. The main reason is to keep the streets clean. Overflowing trashes on the trash bins were so disgusting and nasty. and there were so many flies around the trash bins especially in summer. Then, people started to deal with it their own way. In a word, they prioritized the cleanness. By the way,, street food usually reflects the culture of a country; is easy to find, delicious and inexpensive. It is very good experience. Try many Korean street foods during your stay in Korea.

Hey Ken! At the moment I'm learning Korean, and I find it super exciting to listen and be able to understand a few words here and there in your videos. I really appreciate the uncut and raw interaction between you and the Korean people - it's like I'm there with you myself. I have never seen a video, and chatted and nodded to the content before, so I think it's really fun to see you enjoy Korea. The way you interact with Koreans gives the video a really authentic feel to it. I can't wait to watch some more! I have been searching for videos like yours on RU-vid before, but it's always super short and fully edited with random sounds and noises which I find sometimes annoying. I am so glad I found your channel! Also, I'd recommend giving the translation app "Papago" a try if you want something other than Google translate. :) Best regards from Norway!

Pro tip about the trash thing: In Korea, you won't find public trashcans, and same goes for Japan. I always carry a personal trash bag in my purse or bag when I travel there and dispose of at my lodging, or you can ask for a trashcan (pronounced "suh-re-ghi-tong") at restaurants and dispose small trash there.

Those fish cake skewers are commonly called 'odeng' as they were influenced by the Japanese fish cake stew 'oden.' In standard Korean, they are called 'eomuk.' Lots of Japanese food or Japanese-inspired cooking methods entered Korea in the early 1900s when Japan colonized Korea. You can find many of them at street stalls and also restaurants. Just to name one, the 'Koreanized' version of the Japanese pork cutlet Tonkatsu -- 'Donkaseu' -- is an immensely popular meat dish in Korea. Similarly, the Japanese were also inspired by the French Côtelette when they came up with Tonkatsu in the late 1800s. All in all, it's an example of how cultural exchange creates so many interesting versions of a similar dish that we can try & equally appreciate.

I am moving (retiring) to Thailand in the Fall of 2024. After worrying about my cat being confined to the (pressurized, temperature-controlled, forward) cargo hold, I discovered that Korean Airlines has a few dedicated seats in its planes for passengers to fly with their pets. I was so happy and relieved. To see in your video the pet shop, and street vendor selling pet outfits (!) gives me the impression that Korea is a pet-friendly culture, perhaps moreso than many other Asian locations.

Hi Ken. Fish cake is a nice combination with tteokbokki. She had some on skewers to her right - it helps absorb the spice. The auntie added some fish cake broth to reduce the spice for you. The broth is actually yummy.

Ken, you need to adjust the MHz from 50 to 60 or 60 to 50 to get rid of the video strobe. Different countries have different MHz.

The most popular beer brands are Hite and Cass. These are light/watery lagers and are designed to be refreshing; meant to be taken with food (pairs well with spicy food). Kloud (Pilsner), OB (Lager) and Terra (Pilsner) are examples of more flavorful mainstream Korean beers. I suggest getting Korean Fried Chicken and pair it with beer. Korea makes amazing fried chicken. Bulgogi Jeongol is a favorite noodle dish (beef, veggies and noodles). Korean BBQ is also a must try, but you may have to order for two people in such places. Some of the food smell will linger on your clothes so do this before a wash day.

If you want to experience one of the best places for just chilling, strolling, or having a walk around, and also have fun doing some stuff, I recommend the Songdo central park city. (Highly recommend visiting it at when it's night)

Fish cake is called eomug in Korean and is eaten dipped in soy sauce. The word oden is Japanese. The lady at the stall was not good at English, so she explained it with a name similar to Japanese food.

28:35 As a Korean who likes German beer, Korean beer is certainly softer and even more boring than European beer such as Germany and the UK However, there is a Korean reason for that When Europeans drink beer, they drink only beer or with simple snacks, but the drinking culture of Koreans is usually accompanied by Korean food with a strong flavor Therefore, I think that strong beer breaks the overall balance, so Koreans prefer soft beer But the real reason is that long time ago, Korean beer companies used low-quality malt or less hops for money, so they made and sold boring beer and it coincidentally matched Korean food, so I think that's why so many of those beers have been sold so far These days, young people tend to prefer European beer, especially, so small breweries are producing more and more flavorful beer Of course, Korean beer is not good yet, but some are getting better, I think :)
