Korean Baseball 101: Way Beyond the Bat Flips

Great Big Story

Baseball in South Korea is more than a game. It’s akin to a religion. American missionaries first brought the sport to the peninsula in 1905, and the country absolutely loved it. Today, the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) features 10 teams and a unique sporting culture all its own. The city of Busan and its hometown Lotte Giants have a particularly passionate fan base. From the hitters’ flashy bat flips, to the team’s famous “cheermaster” and its unlikely American super fan, consider this is your crash course on the joyful madness that is Lotte Giants fandom.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

Hello everyone, I have a bit of sad news. Kerry Maher, the American baseball fan @1:07 just passed away yesterday 8/17/2022 at age 68. He was battling blood related cancer for 2 years and caught COVID few months ago which deteriorated health. He passed away in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. Kerry's family donated all of his fortune to KBO to honor Kerry's life long wishes. His funeral was held in South Korea which were financially paid by the baseball fans. Many baseball fans attended his funeral and paid respect which included Korean baseball players who donated their team shirts as a sign of respect for Kerry. Even South Korean politicians sent gifts to honor Kerry at the funeral. The news about his passing was on the TV news and news papers in South Korea. While Kerry was battling cancer, he was still going to all the games he could to cheer for his favorite team. He was a true baseball fan and loved by all Koreans. He held the nickname "Sajik Grandpa" named after a Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan. We will miss you Kerry and may you rest in peace and still cheer for us KBO fans while you are up there!

This is what the MLB should be like. The whole 'bat flip' fiasco in the MLB is just riduclous. Even the NFL is easing up on touch down celebrations.
@andrewcode7806
@andrewcode7806 6 лет назад
Daniel K first off, I the league allows bat flips it is the players that don't allow it. If you try to make my pitcher look bad I'm gunna have his back. If you try to make my teammate look bad I'm gunna say something about it and I'm gunna take offense. 2nd off the NFL has only been getting harder on celebrations
@fluffynoses
@fluffynoses 6 лет назад
so you're saying Korean players don't have their pitchers back? C'mon man. That's a horseshit argument. The pitchers are just pissed b/c they served a big fat one over the plate...but instead of manning up, they cry like girls and throw a fight over it
@sanghwanpark5858
@sanghwanpark5858 6 лет назад
From Not So Downtown U got ur point. But isnt pro sports league all about fans? Who is sad because he hit homerun? Even if u dont flip the bat pitcher would be pissed hitter would be happy. Then why not just express some joy and share it with fans in stadium and make their highlight scene more exciting? Idk if major league has it but in highlight scene in Korea for homeruns especially if it was crucial one, they would review hitter hitting the ball and flipping his bat for like 2,3 times let alone just following where the ball went. I think it is just old fomal tradition mlb got and it is time to let it go. Especially when fans pay at least 3 times more to go to the ballpark than in Korea.

This is one of the major reasons why baseball is losing popularity in the US sadly
@Alexander_Grant
@Alexander_Grant 3 года назад
@@C-Lightning Batflips are why baseball is losing popularity? What an ignorant statement. Longer games with more ads and a lack of a single player being able to affect the game as much so you can follow a storyline is why it's losing popularity. It's why ticket prices shoot up when star players come to town in the NFL and NBA, but Mike Trout bats once every 9 times, and the best pitchers only pitch every 5 games. The stories stem from the teams and not the players, which for some reason put people off. If batflips make you want to watch the game, you honestly shouldn't be a fan.
@C-Lightning
@C-Lightning 3 года назад
@@Alexander_Grant "lack of a single player that can affect a game", I don't know what baseball league you have neen watching. I watch the MLB, guys like Madison Bumgarner, Mookie Betts, Max Scherzer, and Aaron Judge, those players can affect a baseball game and can at times, change the momentum of a game. The fact that you said that players only pitch once every five games or, bat once for every nine innings is, an over exaggeration. I am a fan of the MLB, and it's vanilla personalities such as yourself that, gets their feelings hurt or offended when, a soft ass tradition is 'violated' when a player like Jose Bautista does a single bat flip while hitting a HR. You ever wonder why leagues like the NFL, NBA or, NHL gather popularity? It's because in those sports, a player can showboat during a significant play. Which in a result, can help bring in popularity to each of those leagues and inspire people to play in each said leagues. In the MLB though, no player on the offense cannot showboat during a significant play because, it 'disrespects' the game. The result of this is that, causul folks will continue to see this game as boring as a game of golf. This is what hampers the popularity of the MLB and not long ads or expensive ticket prices or not having enough popular players. This video here is example of why baseball is still popular, it's more lively and expressive than the MLB. Hell, just look at the Venezuela baseball league, players showboat and brings fans into the game. Don't be judging me for not being a real fan of baseball. Get with the times!

Some people can argue that Korea is not really good at baseball(it's not true), and it may be true compared to Major League, but the general skill is not the only aspect you want to see. it's how much people enjoy it. Almost everyone has their own favorite team, and they dedicate their soul and time into it. Your favorite team is generally is chosen by the region that you live or your parents' choice. My father shortly lived in Gwangju, which made him love TIGERS team, which made me and my brother be one of the TIGERS' fam squad. Believe me, when you come to Korea and visit the Baseball stadium, you will be thoroughly impressed by the ambition you see.

In Korea there is Lotte Giants fans and the rest. This franchise is original team start in 1982 and never won regular season 1st place and only won 2 titles in 38 years. But these fans are in different level. Whether play at home or on the road it is home for the Lotte Giants cuz of most enthusiastic fans in the world. Nonstop cheering with loud voice in organized form. So New USA fans, welcome to Lotte Giants and it is my hometown! 1984, 1992. 2020

Wow its a totally different atmosphere with the fans. They really get into it! I wish American fans were more like that. Really into their teams. I’m a big fan of my team but hate the bandwagoners that get the best seats and but the most expensive shirt or other shit only to spend most of their time looking at their phones or taking selfies just end up getting in the way of us real fans...

To get an idea how baseball was introduced in Korea, I recommend you to watch a film 'YMCA yagudan(baseball team)' which was release in 2002. You can find Gang-Ho Song who also starred in PARASITE as a noble family's son who are into baseball game. 'YMCA야구단', It's on WATCHAPLAY app but Eng. subtitle is not available.

First baseball game between Americans and Koreans was played sometime between 1945 and 1950 (1946?). US Army units had come into the Korean peninsula to accept surrender of Japanese forces in Korea. The US army units stayed on until 1949 except for a few advisors. Supposedly in this first game between Koreans and US Army soldiers, the Koreans won.

@keegan1948

I've been to Sajik a couple of times and it is not very big. It's only slightly larger than a triple A stadium. It's tiny compared to any MLB stadium. Also, they are only showing games during the weekends. The stadium is nearly empty during weekdays because most Koreans have insane working hours. Beer's cheap as fuck though.

I agree in the sense that MLB needs to add to the overall fan experience. I like baseball...love baseball and don't care either way. But for casual and newer fans this type of atmosphere could keep them watching and get their butts into stadium seats. MLB is only killing the sport if they let the traditionalist call the shots.

Due to the capacity of the stadium. The capacity of Sajik Baseball Stadium(Stadium which you looked at this video) 25,000 people. But that of MLBs is 30,000~50,000. So MLB game is hard to accomplish sold out game.

Went to an Incheon Wyverns game against the Lotte Giants in Incheon and it was one if the most fun sporting events I've ever been to. The beer was super cheap, about $2 for basically a 22 ounce so we drank beer and pretended to know Korean so we could sing along to the songs. It was so much damn fun. I hope to go back one day.

Kerry is such a cute guy. And these games look so energy-filled and fun. I was in Korea during the World Cup finals, and the amount of pure excitement that koreans show despite not knowing much about football or having any investment in the teams was really infectious. They'd stand and cheer at every little thing.
