Korean culture seems to be everywhere in the U.S. thanks to a years-long multimillion dollar effort by the South Korean government to get Americans interested in Korean culture. It demonstrates the power of what is often referred to as "gastrodiplomacy."

I grew up in south central Texas, but still something about Korean food feels more like home to me than Mexican/Texan food does. So much of it is just so comforting and flavorful.

Korean food is getting so popular that Chinese folk are opening up "Korean" restaurants.

@LForest. FYI there's a large population of Korean Chinese and they are very represented in the restaurant industry, even here in the US. So if you hear them speaking Chinese in the kitchen , it may not necessarily be that they are Chinese. But they are also fluent in Korea, which IS an indication that they are Korean

Korean food literally nourishes the human soul. Original Korean dishes are very healthy, balanced, flavorful, fun and never-ending. Kimchi is at the heart of Korean food and should be considered as the fountain of youth. I swear every Korean person I meet looks at least 10yrs younger than their actual age with amazing skin and a baby-faced appearance. Try guessing a Korean person's age and you'll never get it right lol. Once you start having kimchi though, it's pretty hard to stop. Not sure if there's something addicting about it, but somehow the body will crave it. Korean food can also help heal the world if given a chance. It is very sustainable, low environmental impact, low cost, simple recipes and provides all the balanced nutrition anybody needs. Anyways, give it a try and enjoy!

Agree. After watching many videos about anti-aging, AGE, etc... they are all saying, eat fresh (best) > boiled / steam > fried > deep fry. 2-3 vegetable side dishes in every meal is very common traditionally, along with fresh vegetable eating culture(Ssam) and Kimchi-es are either fresh or fermented (non-fried). As well, spicy food makes skin better because spicy food boost/help Lung(Lung is related to Skin) and sweating out removes toxics out of body.

Many people from outside of Korea misunderstanding about how korean culture's getting big : Korean culture is korean citizen's effort. Not korean government. The government only gives a way.

Yes and No. South Korean govt defintely prioritized by incentives/tax breaks certain industries for growth and market innovations. Not too different from Tesla electric vehicles getting tax subsidies in early years.

As a Korean immigrant myself, I am happy and grateful that we Koreans have something to offer to people around the world. It feels like a privilege to see others appreciate what we enjoy. I also experience the same happiness with cuisines from other countries. Recently, my favorite place to go is Middle Eastern restaurants. Although this cuisine is exotic to us, I don't know why but I find it strangely familiar. It's very unique and really delicious.

Probably the biggest reason why Korean food became so popular owes to Korean restaurant scenes in NYC and LA. The fact Korean food never catered to American tastes and stayed that way well into the 00's made it a cool, edgy cuisine to food writers and burgeoning fine dining, and foodie scene that exploded in the last 20 years. The South Korean government efforts piggy backed off of this wave but frankly all their effort is awkward and entirely a waste of tax payer's money.

I think too much credit is given to SK govt efforts. They sort of try to expand what is already getting popular but most of it is done by creative and driven individuals. Kudos to their efforts and success. I do credit the govt with not limiting the creativity and trying to make rules that help the different fields thrive and not stand in their way. I think their system is something to learn from because it seems efficient and flexible.

Yeah.. its good Korean food is getting attention because it is delicious. But people keep promoting it as it is healthy... and I feel that is may be you true a sense, but the food is generally salty, and also spicey. korean bbq mostly uses charcoal grills hence I don't see a huge benefit and labeling it healthy. Yes compared to trans fat or empty carbs, I guess it is relatively healthy compared to a hot dog or a burger... but meh...

@@deepestsleeep very inaccurate information. I live in Korea. Meats and veggies are hardly steamed. Almost all Korean food is heavily seasoned. Who says Korea has the highest mortality rate? I know for a fact the leading cause of death in Korea is cancer which is directly correlated to the types of food Koreans consume. Stop being blinded byall the nationalistic swlf promoting. The fact is that a lot of Korean food is directly linked to cancer. Korea has the highest rate of ANY country for stomach cancer. Salty, spicy, heavily acidic, and marinated foods lead to inflammation. Its not rocket science.. its just facts.

So the Korean government wanted to help its citizens make money by giving 10 million per year to private companies to create music, TV shows, and movies? Also the primary purpose of Korean entertainment industry is for non-Koreans with the sole intent to make money?
@hjung5579
@hjung5579 4 месяца назад
@Maroong-hp5sn you understood where I was going with my statement. You are exactly right, then why aren’t other countries doing the same thing. The reality is probably that there is some collaboration between private companies and the government, but I highly doubt the government played a key role behind all of this. I think that S. Korea being a democratic country with a freedom of expression was more of a factor.
