Korean Q&A - Many Meanings Of 그냥 

Ur teaching methods are sooo good

One thing that confused me when I first started hearing 그냥 in the wild is that people were using it in situations where you would say things that would illicit a response like "Oh, just because", and instead in Korean you can just say 그냥. Probably one more small thing to add to this great video =D. Like, "Why did you do that?" and then get 그냥 as a response.

A video just about 그냥 would be really helpful! It's such a common word in Korean.

그냥 is one of the most versatile (and confusing) vocab in Korean.

The part about "shyness as a personality trait" got me thinking: Curious if anyone else has experienced a phenomenon where.... when you're the most fluent person in a small group, you unnofficially become group leader, and your confidence soars! People look to you for answers. And suddenly you speak with ease. Or maybe that's more of a personality trait? or a social dynamic where one can overcome shyness? I'm thinking: if you could hang out with newer newbie Korean learners, would you enjoy the social dynamic perks of being leader/guide/looked to for answers? Seems like a trick to get in more practice.

there's nothing wrong with being reminded of a song you heard where this word was used, like "serendipity". But going "JIMIIIIIIIIIIIIN!! OMG BTS!!!" is annoying. It's just a word. it literally has nothing to do with him and ironically it just means "just". this is a channel that helps you learn korean, 99% of the videos have nothin to do with kpop

In linguistics terms, 끝나다 is the regular verb 'to end', which is intransitive, while 끝내다 is the causative form with this root, which makes the latter verb transitive (i.e., able to take a patient/"object" argument). Historically, the latter verb comes from 끝+나+이(+다) 'end(n)+ELLATIVE ('go out from inside')+CAUSATIVE (+INDICATIVE) -> 끝내다 (as 아 + 이 = 애 historically).
