The problem in Korea isn't just the students disrespecting the teachers, it's the parents bullying the teachers. One teacher committed suicide back in July, I don't know what age group she taught. Three more teachers committed suicide in September all because of parental bullying. Then you wonder why there is so much bullying among students, even parents bullying teachers, it's ridiculous. Korea needs to do something about it. You not only have low birth rate, but Korea ranks 4th in highest rate of suicides worldwide! What is the government doing to address these problems?

@@go_gorilla_go 😢That's the teacher who committed suicide in July right? I heard the parent(s) bullied her because the one kid hit another in the face, parents said it was an accident ((so they said) but teacher had the two children go to the front of class and keep their arms up. Parents accused teacher of child abuse, I mean come on not like she smacked them! Had to go to court which found her innocent, but shortly after committed suicide. It seems parents are focused on schooling but not teaching them manners. I use to live in the US, grew up in the 70s, taught respect my elders and those in authority, teachers, police, etc. today I would not want to be a teacher there.

I graduated high school in Gangnam area in 2000. Even back then, the parents were super hands-on with their kids and constantly came to school to bug and harrass the teachers. And for that the teachers are holding the nationwide protest, but I'm sure there's more that didn't make it to public so they literally died without a voice. Following up the teacher suicide that you mentioned, another 2 more are gone as well. The Jeju Provincial Office of Education Manager also took their life at the morning during the protest. Former middle school principal and resigned from President of the Jeju Teachers' Association just last month when the protest occured. Now they have to really take things seriously with the culture of bullying someone that work in certain profession label as "lower servant" status quo. This is the same exact problem that I saw in China as well when I used to work there, civilians start scolding and yelling at medical staff, they have this culture "whoever has the loudest voice wins" and it really make you thinking "wow such a third world". The poor nurse can't do anything but to take it, because the laws only protect the administration under the private sectors. More importantly laws in Korea work slow as there is corruption and government playing musical chairs instead of solving their rapid problems. Overall this is what happen when the nation economic developed way too fast, but the people can't keep up and now it became an dog eat dog world. When the percentage group of family get the wealth during the economy risen but lack education, they will look down on those who don't make it to their level and this is when the bullying start

I was a former Preschool English Teacher in an International School. I left the job coz aside from the daily exhaustion that I felt, the parents disrepect me a lot. I am teaching in a glass walled classroom equipped with CCTV with audio. While I am teaching parents can watch my classes in the lobby. I don't have a problem with this coz it shows transparency in my school. But after my lessons parents flock to me and tell me, why is my activity like that? Why I am not catering to their kids or why their 3 y/o kids can't speak English yet. My last straw was, I was preparing for my lesson when I stepped out for a minute to drink water. When I came back my laptop was gone and one of the kids said, it was thrown by another kid at the back of the room. All my lessons are in that device. Miraculously, it was okay but there's a bit of damage on the keyboard. The kid who threw my laptop starts laughing coz he think it's funny so I called the guardian who happens to be the grandma to tell her grandson to apologize for what he did. I believe as early as 5 y/o they should learn not to touch and damage other people's stuff but to my surprise the grandma told me, it's not a big deal. I am just a mere teacher and they pay that much money to accommodate their kids. I was very disappointed, so I decided to turn in my notice.

Im an online teacher for some Korean students and Chinese, they have it tough in this world with suicide rates. I know enough students that either knew someone, or saw something with their own eyes. @@nebhalabir1201 The suicide rate among Korea's elderly generation is three times the OECD average. The reason can be seen in the fact that Korea went from being one of the poorest countries to becoming a developed country. They are a generation of workaholics who did their best for the development of Korea. Although Korea has become economically prosperous, many people who grew up in rural societies with large families in the past found it difficult to adapt to the changed urban society with nuclear families, and many people felt the emptiness of life after retirement. The main problem is how kids have access to the Internet on their phones and also tendencies for people to shame or 'cancel' people. On top of that, teachers are not allowed to discipline students like they used to in South Korea decades ago. Schools have become very politicized too. What these misbehaving children don't realize is besides teachers educating and teaching kids how to be productive members of society, they're also people too that are trying to do their job. But if these kids misbehave and teachers fear losing their jobs, they're going to either quit or just keep being patient. Things really can't keep going like this. South Korea as a country is going to crash if there are fewer teachers on top of couples having fewer kids.

I'm an English teacher in Korea. I gave up working public schools after my first two years. There's a saying that "North Korea doesn't invade the South because they afraid of 2nd Year Middle School boys" and I understand why. I had the kind of class they talked about in the video, where out of a group of 20-something boys, only 3 of them would even pay attention to the lesson. That classroom smelled like urine and I watched as one boy spit behind a cabinet. I had my own students tell me stories about students sexually harassing a teacher, multiple times. Recently there was a story about a young boy killing an elderly man by throwing a rock off a building. Accidents happen but it brought up again the problem that children in this country face 0 consequences for their actions. The parents all have this narcissistic belief that their child is perfect and can do no wrong, so any problems are blamed on the teacher as stated in the video. If parents don't discipline their children, and teachers aren't allowed to, you start the see the problem. As a foreign teacher, you don't have to deal with parents and thank goodness because I probably would've quit a long time ago. Academies are pretty much the same, except the fear is that parents will withdraw their children from the school, thus making the academy lose money. So Korean teachers pretty much do anything to please the parents (and we foreign teachers are told to just play games and goof off with the students so they can go home and tell mommy that they had fun in English class). Corporal punishment used to be the norm. Students would get beaten and abused by teachers in the past. Korea changed things, but they swung so hard in the other direction that they didn't think about the consequences of no punishment vs. harsh punishment. If even the parents don't understand that children without discipline turn into adults with criminal behavior, there's no telling how worse it will get.

Students s*xually harassing a teacher? That's a new low. Are these parents raising future r@pists and s*x offenders? These students should be sent to Indian schools where teachers not only use the stick but also their mouth to discipline the troublemakers. Urinating and spitting in the classroom is horrible! I bet that doesn't happen even in remote African village schools. I don't want to seem too harsh but that's what happens when your country gets rich overnight. People have lost their mind and can't handle success. That's why I have more respect for the Japanese who literally rose from the ashes to build their country and worked hard. No wonder they are 4th largest economy of the world and deserve it very much. The natural disasters and the spirit to keep rising from the adversities kept them humble. One would have imagined that the amount of suffering Koreans faced during the occupation of imperial Japan, Korean war and military rule, they would have been more humble and would have strived for a better and compassionate society, but all I see is vain and classist people who bully weaker section of the society, flaunt their foreign trips, foreign high-end brand clothes and cars and their fake lifestyle. The victim has become the abuser. The rich throw their weight around and have law makers, police, politicians and education administration in their pockets. They raise young brats who know they will never be punished. If South Korea doesn't fix their "rich people" problems then the society would definitely crumble. A country is from it's people, money alone won't get you that respect.

Children don't respect teachers because parents and school administrations don't respect teachers. Children are sponges, they absorb what they see or hear and they replicate the same behavior. School administrators have only one priority: making parents happy and relegating complaints as a teacher's responsibility. Parents and kids know this, and they take advantage of the fact that, nowadays, they can abuse their power and that teachers have no power nor leverage. They cannot do anything. And I see this kiss up kick down mentality a lot in Korea. Parents don't go after people with power to vent their life frustration, they go after teachers (or service employees) precisely because they have none. More and more kids are raised online and not disciplined at all by their parents. I have seen some pretty abhorent behavior and the parents not paying any attention to it. I was a bit shocked when I arrived in Korea because I always viewed it as a country that was strong on discipline and respect for elders, but the reality now is a bit different with the new generation. It used to be this way like the old gentleman said in the video, but not anymore. I'm sure he faced a lot of abuse and unfair situations from his teachers in his time. I understand why parents wanted to protect their kids after this era, but now the pendulum is swinging too strongly in the complete other direction. I wish we could find a healthy middle ground. No physical/emotional abuse but boundaries and formative discipline.

A big problem, especially in private schools but in schools overall, is parents view teachers and the school as their employees, working for them to deal with their child. Their child can do no wrong, and blame the school for whatever their kid does wrong instead of taking accountability as a parent. And so school management side with parents and not teachers. Teachers have basically no power, it's pretty sad. Also a big side effect of hagwons/academies. Most students go there for after school classes, and view those as the places to really learn, so in school they just goof off. And that again goes back to parents making them study 10+ hours a day even in elementary school.
@Razear

I can understand why certain aspects of a teacher's private life would be scrutinized since they are burdened with the responsibility of being an authority figure to children, but for parents to snoop at a teacher's IG and call her out for posting pictures of herself in a bikini at the beach is a bit much. Perhaps this might be more socially appropriate because of Korea's conservative culture, but what a teacher does on her personal time is not really their business unless she's leading a double life as a corn star or something like that.

Korea better fix their bullying problem. Not only in schools, but also in general public society.
@Ceylin_Kurtbogan
@Ceylin_Kurtbogan 6 месяцев назад
My experience is that, in Korea, if someone can potentially or technically step on you or belittle you, they will. There is no compassion for the weak and everything is a power struggle. If someone is responsible for something of yours, that entitles you to bully them for it. So it is all about a competition of life and social ranking. If you are of lower social ranking as in being a teacher compared to a parent, then you should "know your place" and endure everything they make you live through. I worked in Korea, in a large company and it was the worst mistake of my life. Now I work in Japan where many problems of Korea are also present but at least they are not really as lookist, classist or vain in my opinion and there are at least signs of slow improvements whereas in Korea nothing seems to be changing last time I checked. Also people are MUCH MORE KIND in Japan (but time to time very dishonest). Not to offend but I don't think we should really say "cultural difference" to everything and brush off any actual criticism of a society. Culture is subject to change. Traditional culture of Korea is basically what most other cultures shunned within their own cultural borders, being made the default. Many cultures talk about the importance of "inner beauty" compared to physical attractiveness for example but the emphasis in Korea is that if you are a good person inside, that would show in your physical appearance and if you are someone they perceive ugly, that must be because you are a bad person inside as well. I know not all Koreans are like this but this is what the lookism in Korea is basically about.

really? I lived and worked in Japan, but I came back to Korea after being shocked by the harsher working conditions than in Korea. And I feel it is more accurate to say that it is not that Japanese people are kinder than Koreans, but that Japanese people working in service jobs are kinder than Koreans. Japanese people have a cold side to others, unless it's their business. ‘Lookism’ is the same in Japan. To be more precise, Japanese people focus more on the face of the opposite sex, and Koreans focus more on the body of the opposite sex. So, Japanese men grow their hair long and wax their hair, but Korean men go to the gym and focus more on building their bodies. I think you've only seen the superficial side of Japanese society. I hope you live longer in Japanese society and realize this fact. In my opinion, Koreans and Japanese are essentially similar. (surprisingly) The difference is that Koreans express themselves honestly and directly, while Japanese people tend to say things that are socially correct (but their true thoughts are often different from that). And I also lived in the United States, but unfortunately, people in all countries do not focus only on 'inner beauty'. I saw how short, skinny Asians were treated in America. I agree with what you said, 'Inner beauty is the most important,' but fantasies or prejudices about certain countries are immature. I hope you learn more from your many experiences. :)

Kids are learning these bad behaviors from some place like either social media or at home or just from their surroundings . Kids are sponges at a certain age. Kids are not born with these bad behaviors they are witnessing and holding onto and repeating/acting on these bad acts around them from somewhere. Being a teacher is a calling . I have had my share of really awesome/sweet/enthusiastic/caring teachers and really not so great/weird/need to change profession ones. I know really nice teachers exist or out it the work because they believe in their heart and soul they love and want to teach .. they deserve our support. We need to believe in each other again! We're losing hope in people because so much is going on in the world at once or at a constant speed. We need to break bad cycles. Give and leave hope for the generations to come.

Come to India and experience the power of a teacher 😂 that's how students are disciplined here at least. Sounds like a nightmare to be a teacher in Korea though the parents are to be blamed .. discipline starts at home. The present generation itself is fked not just Korea it's all over the world . I'm sick and disgusted to be living among the hopeless young generation.

as a parent myself seeing kids nowadays disrespect teacher makes me lil bit angry. in my country there was even worst case. student attacked teacher with knife, after throwing chairs to her. i seriously want to know his parents. i want to say to them, "dont just segs, use your brain la". my mother also a teacher. thats why i really respect all of them. for me they are my second mother and father. and most doesnt have enough salary for even living like normal person. kid should know this, parents should control their behaviour. i always make a mad gesture if my daughter doesnt do salam and kiss her teachers hands. this also teach her, that you should also respect older ppl. hopefully. world doesnt turn into this bs freedom.

It is Teacher's Day today in my country. I have been a teacher for 18 years and I want to say a big thank you to all of my wonderful students, you all give me huge faith in younger generations, that you all will have bright future and will bring so much pride to our country. I think I must have taught thousands of students already in these 18 years, and I only remember 2 students who were total pain in the a**, 😂. they were such deviant students who have no respect towards their teachers whatsoever, my colleagues at school blatantly refused to teach their class,but I did not want to lose to their stubbornness so I persisted. I wish these 2 students all the best, since they actually dropped out of school before completing it. For my other hard working, well-behaved, and respectful students, thank you again for making me the happiest teacher ever. You all make me love my job so much and I wish you all the happiest and brightest future that you all deserve.

Afghanistan is a different ballgame altogether. Women there are denied education because of gender. But in some other countries where there is no gender based discrimination , some children who don't want to go to school prefer a different alternative way to learning (like homeschooling) as they don't want to be humiliated by teachers or deal with bullying.

It happens in my hometown as well, a small region in Indonesia. Once students understand how much power certain teacher has over their life, they can adjust their action upon it, especially `contract`-based. I mean, some teacher even get paid daily, not a contract. So strange for me because culturally we respect elders unconditionally, yet it happens.

In Indonesia, we parents most likely ask the teachers to teach and discipline our kids with care. I personally teach my boy to respect his teacher and follow rules at school. Just because he got time out by his teacher, i remind him that it doesnt make his Miss not liking him or make him a bad student. His teacher indeed cares for him and the students cares n love her. We remind our kids that teacher can get tired too, so please listen to ur teacher. I feel sorry for this young teacher. May she rest in peace and her legacy lives forever.

It is a global phenomenon and not just a Korean issue. Some veteran teachers here in the US just quit due to bad behavior by the students and their parents. It is so sad as education is so important but yet they are treating teachers like this. A lot more needs to be done before it is too late.

This is what my sister is going through as a teacher in the Seoul area. Kids disrespect and parents causing stress if they will get her fired. Even when she is a good teacher trying to get kids to learn. Parents want the teacher to parents. But scream abuse when their child is disciplined. Schools take side of parents over teachers because they’re worried they will lose money of parents. Teachers living in fear of losing their jobs is not a good environment.

As an English teacher in Korea, it is really frustrating when students are talking over you, yelling, screaming, not paying attention or refusing to sit down or do anything you ask them to... and my Korean co-teachers sometimes can do little to nothing to control them. Sometimes. Some teachers are respected more than others, some teachers are kind of tired and don't really do much for classroom management... some students are great and compliant while others are SO disrespectful and I (growing up in the US) would think the logical thing would be to give them some form of punishment like staying after class or during break, giving them extra homework, writing standards... it's ridiculous that they just get away with anything. I do consider this when I think of how much longer i would like to teach here.

It's solely due to korean culture right now. With society so focused on results and getting into SKY, kids are expected to spend all their time learning. Parents never do any actual "parenting" for kids to learn values, respect, and manners. I knew someone who before their family moved to america,their schedule was literally -wake up - school - hakwon (cram school) - get home at 11 - repeat This was when they were in elementary. There was zero time for parents to interact with their kids. With both parents working also becoming common and company dinners, parents are gone. What's the point of raising a smart, studious kid if they are depressed and suicidal?

As a former teacher, I can testify that this issue isn’t just happening in Korea (well it’s less extreme in countries where I used to teach though). Hot take but when your education system is plagued by a horrible culture of high suicide and pressure for entrance exams I’m glad students are fed up and are acting like this. (Parents seem awful as a teacher though). Hopefully this will inspire education reform but I doubt it. I hope we see these people disobey military officers next and stop the horrible culture of mandatory military service.
@Ceylin_Kurtbogan
@Ceylin_Kurtbogan 6 месяцев назад
that pressure of entrance exams is not coming from personal teachers and nothing justifies teachers being bullied to the point of suicide just for doing their jobs. Pressure basically comes from parents literally bullying the teacher everyday to persuade them into giving better and fake scores for students' tests. This is not a reaction to toxic education system of Korea, it directly is a side result of it. In Korea social ranking and power struggle is real. Anyone you see that seems weaker than you becomes a "legit target" for bullying. People aren't being reactionary, they do what they see all around themselves and bullying is unfortunately one of them. They are not protesting, they be mean on purpose and there is nothing you can do as a teacher to stop it or else you are in massive trouble. (though mostly for Korean teachers. as a non Korean teacher you aren't really taken much seriously by anyone.) Disobeying military officers? You have never been in a military camp have you? :D Also "horrible culture of mandatory service"?! Really? I think it shows you are from a very comfortable area with no immediate external threat to you so you can make naive statements like that. You know that they share border with one of the most dangerous, unpredictable and bad country in terms of human right violations and they are still technically at war right? They need to train the populace in case of an emergency. Enemy never sleeps and naive approaches taken in real life like this would have massive consequences. One example is Armenia vs Azerbaijan. Armenia which was roughly in same strength with Azerbaijan in 1991 was a bit too confident about the changing dynamics of 21st century and result was an utter failure on their side losing all their occupied territory in Azerbaijan.

I don't want to pretend I know everything about South Korea but it seems a lot of societal problems had been because they hold on to old traditions dearly like the senior-junior hierarchy system which interferes with juniors not able to express themselves or stand up to the seniors. And the past trauma from the military rule where most policemen, armymen and teachers would mistreat, physically and mentally abuse the citizens/students to keep them in line could be a factor which resulted in stripping them of any strict authoritative powers because they were kind of given a free hand in the past. I have seen the portrayal of such army personnels, police and teachers in many movies and shows based on that period where the teacher was literally beating up students mercilessly to discipline or punish them. I have been told that police has lost it's power now and South Korean citizens have more power over the police.The teachers are also put under immense pressure. The homeroom teacher is given all the responsibilities of the students. He/She also has to manage the students outside the school. We had homeroom teachers too in my country but they were responsible only for their class inside the school premises. Also, a student's discipline and moral responsibility wasn't put on the homeroom teacher. It is parents responsiblity to discipline their child at home. They learn good and bad at home. So the question is why are the entitled parents not doing their job at home and expecting teachers to raise their unruly children? Principal should protect the teachers. Their should be teachers union or teacher's association to protect the rights of teachers against bullying and mistreatment. The bullying happens in school, office and other places because the people face no consequences. Democracy doesn't mean no discipline and that citizens are free to be bullies towards police, teachers, celebrities and weaker section of the society. It looks to me that the system needs to change to bring the change in the society. And South Korea has a scary cancel culture that needs to be addressed as well.

I don't know maybe *cheating* is the most given disrespect students have done towards the teachers and the nature of learning especially what students normally call as "teamwork" and sometimes used as "test of friendship". It's also like fooling themselves in the end with the grades vs what they have actually learned, acads or values wise. Proves that numbers only matter in the end, not learning and quality of education and people the system might produce.
