Korg ARP 2600 Synthesizer Demo with Mikael Jorgensen - All Playing, No Talking 

Almost. The thing everyone forgets when they try to make the authentic R2D2 sound is, that sound designer Ben Burtt (who created the sound for R2D2) used a microphone into the Pre-Amp of the 2600 and then used the Envelope follower to modulate the sound as he spoke the actual voice of R2D2. Once mine arrives, I'll be doing a proper tutorial of it unless someone beats me to it...

@@Genshi Thanks for the reply, GMG. If someone else beats you to it you should still do it. Once people start getting ahold of these things we'll undoubtedly see a few R2 tuts pop up around youtube. Everyone's patches are going to be slightly different and if you know how to do it more authentically then your patch will probably come out better than the competition. By the way you described it alone, everyone's voice is going to have different dynamics in their performance to feed the envelope follower, so there will be subtle differences no matter what, never mind the whole analog aspect. I suppose the most authentic patch would have Burtt's raw performance recording fed into the pre... wonder what kinds of things he was doing with his voice to create the character.

There are a couple of interviews with Ben Burtt (he did all the sound design for the original Star Wars, including the Lightsabers) and he says that the R2D2 sounds were actually the most difficult. He spent months working on it, making all sorts of baby noises into the 2600 while manipulating it, then meticulously editing little snippets of his performances and re-organizing them together to make it all work right, so even he wouldn't be able to recreate his original performances as he did back then, but he certainly would come closer than any of us! One interesting bit of trivia, he didn't even own an ARP 2600, he borrowed that one he used for Star Wars from Director Francis Ford Coppola (who later used it for sounds on his own movie "Apocalypse Now" including many of the helicopter sounds!)

I was a huge Angel fan back in the day, but I don't remember keyboardist Greg Giuffria ever using an ARP except for the ARP String Ensemble (a small stringer synth.) He had a big Moog IIIc Modular, a couple of Minimoogs and a Polymoog, a Mellotron, and a Hammond Organ along with a Piano.

Nope, you are wrong. These are difficult to make, and just like the Moog System 55 or Model 15, these are definitely limited to 400 units worldwide, half of which are already sold out. I do think they will make a mini version which will probably be announced this week at the NAMM show. And of course, there is the forthcoming Behringer version and all the other clones available.

Genshi Media Group how do you know for sure ? I hear what your saying but why show it off at NAAM if the 400 are sold ? I’ve checked 10 different places and are all gone

Behringer version will be under $1,000

Not identical form factor at all, Behringer already showed their version back in June which is a smaller tabletop unit, no keyboard (unless they decided to add one) and no Tolex case, not to mention the ATA Road Case that Korg is also including. Because of those factors, the Behringer version should come closer to around $1000.

Either way im holding off to see what behringer offering is...they haven't disappointed me yet&saving a few hundred or thousand may prove to add a couple more random(korg wave,behringer system 100,maybe bs80) to the family....

@@Genshi Oh well, I didn’t really expect so. it’s just a shame that so few faithful 2600 reissues are being made by Korg. It’d take me more than a few months to save up for it, and by then It’ll long since be sold out and reverb/ebay listings will be $400 or more over initial price due to scarcity..

@@rdm5190 I have high hopes for the Behringer modular offerings .. Neutron, MS-01 and DM12 exceeded all my expectations , so I expect they’ll continue this streak. I just don’t get why they used S-trig standard when everything else is Eurorack compatible on the Moog modular clones. Hopefully they haven’t already started mass-production yet and can still remedy this oversight.

You're very welcome! I'll be doing a ton of videos once my ARP 2600 arrives (it's been number one on my dream synth wishlist for decades!)

You obviously don't understand what it is or the history behind it (anybody who would say "and not even polyphonic" just has no clue.) I suggest you watch the excellent video Reverb just put out on the ARP 2600. Price-wise, for what you are getting, it is actually a bargain, especially considering that for a fully restored vintage version the prices are going up to $17,000 U.S.

Just wait for Behringer version. $3500 is not a bad price for an instrument that cost roughly the same amount in 1979, when $3500 then would be $9000 in todays money. Behringer version will likely be under $2000, maybe even $1500 (guessing) and close to the same sound quality.

I've seen the Behringer version, and for most people that are wanting that ARP 2600 sound, it's going to be perfectly fine (and probably closer to around the $1000-$1200 price range) but for those of us that want the most authentic ARP 2600 experience, the Korg Arp is the way to go. They've nailed everything about as close as perfection as possible. They are using the original op-amps for the VCOs, and unlike their ARP Odyssey reissues, they are using discreet components for the Filters... all hand made in Japan. I pre-ordered the day before the official announcement to ensure I would be first in the U.S. to get my hands on this dream synth of mine (so now I can take that $17,000 vintage version off my wishlist at ToneTweakers.)

@@Genshi Strange no one seems to mention multiple versions of the TTSH have been around for years..

I've mentioned it along with the other clones, numerous times on other threads/videos; the TTSH, the Antonus clone, the beautifully done $8000 CMS 2607 clone... but none of them are a 1:1 reissue with the endorsement of the co-founder of ARP like the Korg ARP 2600, even though some of them (like the CMS) might be a better synth.
