I've had this since shortly after it came out and used it on every every album I've done since (Space Station Alpha, if you're interested). I've always gotten wonderfully lost just playing with the buttons--I take notes on each knob as I tweak to leave bread crumbs to get it back if I like it. I've never knew quite how to use the mod sequence, so thank you for that. If you listen to my songs, you'll hear a lot of A12 set on arp (and used without arp as a melody instrument), but I've used lots of others as well, many just cooked up playing with knobs. It's heart warming to see the pride and joy of my band here, handled so well by someone who knows what they're doing.
I love videos like this. I've had an original MS2000 since the year 2000 when it was the coolest synth I could afford at the age of 21. I haven't afforded much since, and I was always going to learn how to "really" use it later. Later is now and watching people work through the processes is the best way for me to learn. Knobs and options are great for my scatterbrain, but people like me need people like you to help get a grasp on what the hell we are actually playing with. I'm also stoked to see this old synth getting some love, even if you have the B version which makes me jealous. The original flavor (I have the keyboard version) had a bad clock and it was impossible to match BPM without midi synch which was a huge letdown 16 years ago and still is because of my workflow, but now I'm learning new workflow and videos like this are indispensable. I think the MS2000 sounds corny sometimes but I also think it's a great exemplar of synthesis as it can cover the breadth of corny->sublime with skill; an instrument that I'm still proud to own and has nearly unplumbable depth.
outstanding tutorial!!! I finally can make proper use of the mod sequencer to add great tonal and movement changes into my patches. I like my Ms2000 as much or more then my virus polar. Its very inpirational and harsh sounding. Thanks again!!
Great video. My MS2000b is in storage at the moment but I never played with the sequencer on it previously. Can't wait to get it out soon and have a play.
Great demo! I think not having the Mod Sequencer is the major disadvantage of the MicroKorg (and of the MicroKorg XL, if compared to the RADIAS)... But I did manage to use a software sequencer to send MIDI CC to my Microkorg and reproduce your pattern: It was great! Thanks for the tutorial! Cheers!
This was awesome video man.. so thankful , finally the first American do it right , speaking and sound demonstration .. perfect.. I would pay for this video ;)
The key here is to persevere with it. If you do that you will get the sounds you want just like the programmers who did the factory settings, it's the same for any synth.
Thanks for taking the time for thorough review. Looks very controllable, but what about the sound quality? It was a little hard to pick that up from the video.
Great tutorial, thank you! The manual - as you said, doesn't explain very much on the synth side! Is there a way you can sync your computer to be used as the beat/drums and as the clock instead of an MPC? If there is, does it just work the same as if you were using the MPC?
Great turtorial! Many thanks!! I bought this synth last week as second hand. Is it possible to have 2 sequences running for the pitch? So for example on SEQ1 a base line and on SEQ2 higher notes?
+peterismobiel Yes and no, If you have to mod lanes adjusting pitch, then they will sum and provide only one output. However, if you split the mode into 'dual' and setup 2 separate timbres then you can mod sequence each one, but you will need to setup a split or separate midi inputs. If that doesn't make sense let me know and I can do a quick vid next week to demonstrate, thanks for watching!
+will scott Hi Will, thank you so much for that! Since I am totally not familiar with this machine, I would love a video. It is so much easier to understand for me (and others too I presume) because you certainly know your way around on this synth :-)
I own the ms2000B. It occasionally gets turned on when i'm bored playing all my other synths. It sounds very digitally metallic, thin, cold and anaemic and that's what I like about it. I bought this synth because i'm such a huge fan of the MS-20 thinking it would compliment the ones I have, but no. Its not evern close. It's not a digital ms-20.
ato zee cool. interesting. i know a guy who used this as his go to drum n bass bass designer. He would make the bass sounds and lines then sample into an MPC
Excellent thanks a lot Will - been programming up the old MS2kBR (linked to the B keyboard: 'ODD/EVEN' now = 8 beastly voices!), so this was real helpful. ps. curious what's the Kawai unit below Will? cheers
Thanks for you video! But I can`t understand for sure. How many instruments can you run with this midi-spliter? I saw the back of it - it has only 3 midi-outs. Please, correct me where I'm wrong... midi-controller connected to MPC via midi -> MPC midi-out connected to midi-spliter in - > all synths connected to Kawai via midi and audio -> audio-outs of Kawai connected to Behringer?
Hello, please i need help, everything works perfect, but the only function that doesnt work are the 16 knobs of attack decay etc.. i have to use this with screen, but not with knobs they dont do nothing could somebody help me please?
where did you purchase the rack that your MS is mounted on? i want to mount up my ms2000r to save space but don't know where to look for a rack. i don't need anything complex or expensive.
Hey man! ++ your video was great. It actually helped me decide for the MS2000R. I just got it, but I'm having some trouble setting it up. I just connected a nord electro to the midi in of the synth, and the connections seem to be in order (correct midi channel and proper in and out cables to and from the unit) but when I play the nord, I only get sound from the synth from the same 6 keys throughout the keyboard. A wholetone scale starting from C# (C#, D#, F, G, A and B). I don't know what the problem is, but I'm not getting any sounds from the other six keys in any octave, which makes me think it is not the custom tuning available in the settings of the MS2000R. The nord plays fine when I try to hear the sounds that come from it. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong. Thank you for any help you can give me and thank you for your video. TOMAS
from a freshly booted ms2000, try this. press global. press page+ until you see 'midi filter...'. press cursor -> until you see NoteRcv and verify that it is set to all. based on the notes you listed, and assuming you are starting a C it could be set to odd. let me know what's what..
Hey man! it was exactly what you said, the problem is solved :=). How do you do the reset? I tried looking it online, but i'm very bad with this... could you point me towards a more comprehensive explanation somewherE? thanks for your help sir
I’m having a hard time updating the synth to the last version they put out to fix the timing issue. I’ve been told my computer is too new . Smh. Hate I can’t get the update
Great video, better than the manual :) Got the ms2000r some years ago and learnt how to use it pretty much but it's not had much use for a while with new gear entering my studio. Just got the keyboard version today so I'm experimenting hooking them up. Have you done this? I'm trying to get them to play as an 8 voice but there is very little information available.
+zafrosoundz I just got one myself. I traded a Korg Minilogue for it + some cash. Anyway check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZApiSSGHFUU.html
+will haha we're on the same wave length dude. I actually found the details in the manual eventually. Lots of angles to explore it's a whole new beast now. I've been experimenting turning off send controls etc using it as a 4 Osc synth. A lot to explore.
Great video. I feel like this is a dumb question, but in your video, when you make changes to any parameter we see those changes in the menu along with the parameter name. Is there a menu setting to enable this?
Thank you. Would have been nice if you could record the sounds it creates from "line in" rather than from the air with the microphone, but I understand it would make the video much more difficult and lengthy to make.
Very helpful video. You helped me get out of the presets and actually make a pad. Still it seems my sequencer is not working I followed your instructions: pressing seq 1 then adjusting the knobs and then turning on the mod sequence and pressing a key but only the light under knob1 "common" lights up. If anyone could help with this i would be very thankful!
FellCommaDestroyed it's like 1 of 2 things.. either you need to hold the key down longer OR under the sequencer settings in the menu, Last Note is set to 1 and you'll want that up to 16..
I'm thinking that the problem has to do with the sequencer settings. I can't seem to find last note in the menu. Under SEQ COMMON E18A-E18E: Last Step is at 04, Seq Type Forward, Run Mode Loop, Key Sync Timbre, resolution 1/4. Thanks for the help so far!
sorry! Last step is what I meant. Set it to 16 and set run mode to loop and change resolution to 1/16 to get it going. Also, make sure the sustain is up on your amp envelope so you will be able to hear it as long as you are holding a note..
I changed all of the settings to those, adjusted the 4 knobs like you did in the video, turned on the mod sequence and held a note but nothing happened. it did the same thing where only the light comes on under the first "common" knob.
if you push the 'edit' button near the display a small E should show up on top left of the display. in this mode tweaking knobs should show the value of that specific parameter on the display. Then press exit to revert back to the patch name. And don't forget to save changes with the write button ( that works in any mode)
Glad that worked for you. To factory reset: make sure it is off. press and hold the mod sequence on/off button and also the number 3 sequencer button (the 3rd white square on the bottom). Then turn it on while holding both and voila
Bobcatt22 I do still own it, and use it occasionally as a vocoder.. however, I have switched over to a micromonsta for my VA duties, partially because it sounds better, but mostly because of the size. It is still a solid machine that isn't pegged to that dated 90s sound that befell so many other instruments of that era
I did purchase the MS2000 just yesterday. I will clean it and replace the vocoder slide switch on the back and maybe sell it. One of the patch buttons seems to be dirty, when it is a part, I will clean it with contact cleaner. I guess you sold the MS2000R by now?
I can't for the life of me trigger the mod sequence from my MPC2500. I used to trigger it with the keys from a micron but I sold that. Any advice? I've been on this problem for a year or more.
So you should have: midi out from mpc to midi in on ms2000. Midi channel set on mpc track to whatever your ms2000 midi channel is set to. and the mod sequencer enabled (black button in mod sequencer section. Make sure that the ms2k's clock is set to external or auto.. Global >C position should be set to preTG... Maybe make sure that pads to notes are on and on max velocity on the mpc..
Great video However - after all this time you spent creating that sound / custom patch / custom voice (however it's called) - I understand that if you now switch to another sound, or switch off the machine...the custom sound you've made will be lost! Do you have any advice for saving sounds for easy recall? In a live situation you might want to toggle through multiple custom sounds during a live set - in which case you wouldn't be able to create each custom sound afresh mid-set. - unless you want to annoy the hell the audience. Any tips?
Yeah, I should have demonstrated that! Basically after creating a sound you press the 'write' button twice and the patch will be stored in the current slot
Was going to put this on CL until I added an external reverb - Alessis Quadraverb - izzz keepin this dude. The synth you replaced for the MS2000, the Micromonsta does not have the knobs like what is on the MS-2000. I do not like menu diving. Add reverb and you got an great synth. Also looking at the Deepmind rack at a reduced manufacturers price of $599.00 or Korg's Prologue.
2020 here, Just got mine up and running. Thank you for the information. Manual download is here for any latecomers like me. www.manualslib.com/manual/258007/Korg-Ms2000r.html
@@AveMcree My Sincere Appologies !!, I Actually Enjoyed Your Videos Very much.!! Back When I wrote that post, I was Was Watching many Videos About the Korg MS2000 Because I really wanted to hear all the different sounds and capabilities that It had and can do. I had an Opportunity to Purchase one Dirt Cheap. I eventually Bought it, Tried it out, and then went back to your Channel to Watch more About your "Tutorials" and your Input. I am very Embarrased that I jumped so Quickly to judge and comment on your Channel. It was not Intentional. Please Accept my Apology. I am sorry for Jumping on a whim to Express What I was Hoping to Hear about the Korg MS2000. I really Like your Videos, They Are very Informative, more than I would have Known Without watching More on your channel. Sorry!!!!! And Cheers!! God Bless :)
