Snowshoe walking along the beautiful valley of Pounds creek.
Winter 2023 #10 : Guthega - Illawong - Suspension bridge - Lower reaches of Pounds creek - Headwaters of Pounds creek - Descent to the camping trees - return to Guthega via Illawong.
Distance : This circuit would be about 16 km long.
Walking conditions : The Illawong walk under snow, an alpine meadow or two, and snowfields.
Notes : Snow cover often gives access to many places that are practically impassable in other seasons. There are enormous swathes of heath in the Pounds creek valley and it is not normally possible to walk its whole length without causing damage to the vegetation. Not to mention how unpleasant a huge uphill heath crossing can be, with invisible foot placements, hidden rocks, the risk of stepping on a copperhead, and just generally having to endure endless cloying tendrils of bug covered shrubbery. Few things can make a bushwalk more miserable. But in winter, long open snow slopes give easy access, and the only impediment is the short length of the day.
The general area around the camping trees is very popular with snow camping groups in winter, hence the igloo.
